Always room for a good quality SIFI series! Most of them stink. The premise of BBY5 that bothered me was building a space station that everyone wanted to blow up. If you want something that is hard to blow up you should put it on a planet where vacuum will not instantly kill your population on your first hull breach.
There's a few decent explanations for that, actually.
Most spaceships in the B5 setting aren't capable of atmospheric flight (in fact it's a minor plot point in "A Voice in the Wilderness" that the Starfuries can't manage it). B5 isn't only the Space U.N., it's also a major international commerce hub. And the setting doesn't have transporters, either, so you have to physically dock somewhere.
As explained in the season 2 opening narration, the Epsilon Eridani system (where the station is) is neutral territory. Unclaimed planets with breathable atmospheres aren't very common in this setting, and not every species breathes an Earthlike nitrogen-oxygen-CO2 atmosphere.

BSG may have done well... but there was almost nothing to break up the tension. It was almost wall-to-wall drama. Some might even go so far as to call it a soap opera with a sprinkling of sci-fi.
SG:U was almost BSG with a Stargate. It was getting a bit better by having some humor to break up the tension, but it came too late. I was looking forward to SG:U but it deviated way too much from its predessors apparently.
SG-1 and Atlantis used humor to break up the tension, and so did Babylon 5 and Firefly.
Stargate Universe had something BSG didn't have - Exploration of the Universe. BSG is probably still my favorite show for everything else, but SGU did bring back some of the wonder of exploring the universe. Weird stuff going on, a mysterious objective for the ship, aliens that are completely non-humanoid and non-relatable, aliens that don't conveniently speak English.
I wish it had been given more time. But I guess the grimdark stuff didn't appeal to the Stargate audience, and the Stargate title made the grimdark-interested people look the other way.

Agreed. SG:U Did bring exploration in, but it was just too dark.
once you get around some the sany bits of sgu, its actually not a bad series, the mission where the team go through to this jungle planet and these small lifeforms kill the crew off in a supposed recording of events, that was probably the best bit :P or unless you like pure eye candy so you had ginn for a few episodes.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

Maybe Gin is what killed the show.
Here's the target's audience proxy, a smart nerd that gets to join a space expedition. ANd he finds a hot girl that is his equal and they get to make out.
And then she gets murdered. And the nerd doesn't even get to take revenge for it, another one does it.
And then she gets returned to him as hologram/holodeck. And it's get taken away from him again because that other guy's girlfriend screwed up.
How can a writer team be so cruel?

I love B5 & while not against a reboot from its creator would far more prefer a new story in the established universe & a digitally remastered version of the original series. I dare say the unique chemistry between several the original actors is impossible to recreate.

I think a digitally remastered version is on the horizon, as we've already gotten that for 2 Star Trek shows. Maybe alongside the reboot we'll get a remastered series relaunch?
