Some boats, like new Patrol Escort Refit, can be made worth it, provided you upgrade em to Fleet first (which makes it a 3,000 Zen purchase total).
Lockbox ships can cost you anywhere between $100-$200 RL Dollars. So, 'worth it' is a relative term. I do love my Ody set, but, overall, I'm not investing in C-Store ships any more.
The Cstore ships won't become useless. Weather or not they get an upgrade, they're still a perfectly viable option. You won't be wasting your zen buying one.

This. Are people saying they wouldn't want to get a Regent at least for the Mk∞ [Arc] quantum torp unlock?
Is there anything in the c store that is so awesome that you must buy it now? Cryptic has a history of bait and switch with their shiny stuff ... so making a purchase now before the biggest changeover since STO Beta is seriously unwise.

"With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censored, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."
7 to 10 T6 ships at launch. Currently, the vast majority of ships in game is T5. Hundreds of T5. It's literally impossible they get outdated, it's like smashing a hammer on Cryptic's face in ship sales. They said already T5 won't become obsolete, they can be upgraded, you're not wasting Zen buying a ship now. Plenty of time until X2, two months to farm Zen.
Nobody here can tell you for certain whether or not a Tier 5 C-store ship will still be usefull after the new expansion goes live. They will be competitive to Tier 6 ships. But "competitive" can mean a lot. Will they be upgraded to match Tier 6 ships in shield and hull strengh? Maybe. Just remember that Cryptic has especially emphasized that creating new ships is expensive. They want the new Tier 6 ships to be a good seller which tells me that those ships will indeed be considerably better than our current c-store ships. Those new abilities limited to them might make a huge difference.
If I were you I would wait till october to buy your first c-store ship or at least till we have more information.

Aiming to sell at most 10 different ships and leave the ton of T5 behind? Hmm I don't think so. T5 are going to be worth the buck in X2, logically.
cryptics logic is flawed in the best of moments let alone when they see lots of money on the table just waiting to be taken.
they are confused and are going to make a mistake somewhere save your money untill after t6 ships come out and compare then. until then we shall not know whats worth it.
If T5 are going to be so capable, then why go out of the way to call the new ones T6
Because the tier 5s won't be tier 5s any longer after their upgrade, I'd imagine. I think the tiers are just STO's way of denoting the general technological levels of the ships. The new tier 6s are gonna be made with state-of-the-art tech, whereas tier 5s are older ships that are merely upgraded with state-of-the-art tech.

Tell that to wholly new-build vessels like the Avenger-class.

They already stated several times there will be a way to upgrade to T6 with the T5 ships. I would go on and buy the ship you have in mind.
I bought several over the years of playing. So far I hadn't bought a ship I don't enjoy. Each one been lots of fun to use.
Actually they said the upgrade will bring tier 5 ships into the competitive range of tier 6, but they've also explicitally said its not an upgrade to Tier 6.
Clearly tier 6 ships will have something unique.
The only question is how much a difference that unique thing makes.
From experience with Cryptic games, the ship upgrade system will allow you to either;
A- Plug holes in your ships stats i.e; More hull and damage resist to your glass cannon.
B- Boost your existing DPS, and by adding new procs to your weapons.
They will be expensive upgrades, likely to tie in with the new crafting system. these upgrades will take no small amount of time to complete in order to give the illusion of more content.
The devs said in no uncertain terms, T5 ship upgrades will NOT be tied to the Crafting System.

T6 ships wlll be able to use a new type of BOFF. And they will have abilities that lower tiers of ships won't have. As an rough analogy, existing t5 ships to T6 ships wil be as Federation/KDF ships as to omulan Warbid (i.e. they have Singulaity Powers that other ships don't).

It still won't make them obsolete and worthless like so many are stating. Granted they won't be exact T6, but it will be close enough. Just like current ships some have 10 consuls some don't. Those ships are still just as good compared to each other.

But without the power loss to offset it.
Dont get me wrong, I'm waiting for details before jumping to conclusions, but to suggest the special T6 ability is trivial is also a conclusion.
I wouldn't advise buying a T5 ship until we do have clarity on this issue.
I fianaly have enough zen to get myself a ship. With the release of t6 ships. Is it worth it?
Not until we learn what they mean when they say T5.5 will be 'competitive' to T6. Save your Zen! Most likely there will be plenty of true T6 ships in the C-store when it comes out.
When is the last time anyone has seen an Atrox or Kumari. That should give you an idea of how bad they are.
ive seen a few flying about, about the same chance as some other ship types. ones i have almost never seen are the aquarius escort, mvam, defiant, kar'fi, vor'cha for example
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

The way I see it, C-Store ships are still worth getting because they are ACCOUNT unlocks. So even if they somehow are made obsolete on your top level characters... if you ever decide to make a new one guess what? C-Store ships ready to go!
I can't take it anymore! Could everyone just chill out for two seconds before something CRAZY happens again?!

You're just trying to make lemonade out of that Vesta buy

They're probably called Tier 6 because of the fact they represent the raw "bleeding edge", technologically.
Tier 5 would be considered endgame "line" vessels.
I see both often. Just because some people have decided their worthless doesnt mean everyone has decided to stop flying them.
So t6 ships might be a line of ships only different in gameplay type, not actual stats like firepower or tanking.
Not better, just different.
And it's a real shame too because a lot of interesting questions come up.
How many new ranks, how many new ranks for boffs, what will their title be - and so how many new tier abilities are coming?
How much grinding, how many months of 20 hour projects, to get to 60?
Will we be allowed to finally color our ships now they are un-official fake star trek design ?
But yeah no point until we see what choices they made, on tribble 4 days from launch
