If what we see on TV is "maturity," I don't want it.
I watch very little TV these days partly for that very reason: it's either reality TRIBBLE or it's depressing. Now, I DID like Battlestar Galactica. But I have seen it. I don't need anything else like it, and to me another "edgy" show like that would just be repeating the same old stuff. While I also find stuff like Leave It to Beaver unsatisfying for lack of any sort of realism and for reflecting values I do not stand for (female subservience, etc.), I also find the extremely gritty shows do not stand for my values either.
And I don't care what anyone thinks of it: what I watch, what I read, what I write is something I want to be able to stand behind. That is especially true of my writing: if my characters act in ways I would be ashamed of (without at least being called out for their actions by *someone*, if not punished), then that is not something I feel right doing. It's important for me to consider the message behind what I do--what it shows is acceptable and what is not. (And for the record, "unacceptable" has to do with being cruel and disrespectful, not with expecting everyone to be just like me or something.)
I feel the same about what I watch: if it's sending a message that treating others cruelly or with disrespect is okay, and there isn't even a credible word of complaint when it happens, then that's not something I want to see. We have enough nastiness in the public discourse, enough nastiness on the Internet. I don't feel like I have any obligation to feed myself a diet of that.
To the OP...have you ever seen the movie Stranger Than Fiction? Despite having Will Farrell in it, and being a comedy, the movie actually offers a serious commentary on the way our society has come to regard its entertainment and the attitude that has developed towards comedies versus tragedies (good ending vs. bad ending). I think you might like it.

The Last Ship, Falling Skies, Defiance, Game of Thrones, Homeland, Hannibal, Mad Men, on and on and on and on.
I mean, I love action and gruesome death as much as the next guy, but one can only take so many people getting shot before they feel like watching something else. Is there anything worth watching or should I just reinstall minecraft?
At the moment... there really isn't anything worth watching, at least in my opinion, except for the odd episode of Iron Chef America and River Monsters...
Wha?! There are SOOOO many good shows right now!
Good shows I've watched in the past 6 months:
Mad Men
Cosmos
Game of Thrones
Orphan Black
Orange is the New Black
House of Cards
Doctor Who
Sherlock
Archer
Louie
The Last Ship, Falling Skies, Defiance, Game of Thrones, Homeland, Hannibal, Mad Men, on and on and on and on.

How is this possible? With so many cool and cute anime shows available, you should be tickled silly!
Or you can just buy a fuzzy little bunny to snuggle up close with!

In addition to some of the other shows mentioned, Turn on AMC is absolutely marvelous. Its about the first American spy ring during the Revolution. A bit deliberately paced at first, but it picks up as the season progresses.
I don't know, I'd say Episode 2 of the most recent season was about the happiest ending I could imagine
Yeah it was, I hated the rat, overall season 4 has been really epic.
Even though Game of Thrones can get really dark, it has what a good show needs,
1) a solid cast and writing team
2) it keeps the viewer intrigued to what's going on
3) the fact anyone can be killed off at any time makes for a lot of suspense- season 3 episode 9 is a good example of that
4) the characters are not one dimensional, they are in fact all interesting in their own way
"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."

I've never watched Game of Thrones. Don't have HBO and haven't bothered with it on Netflix...hrmmm. Universally hated character though? Heh, might be worth watching up to the point they kill him off then.
In addition to some of the other shows mentioned, Turn on AMC is absolutely marvelous. Its about the first American spy ring during the Revolution. A bit deliberately paced at first, but it picks up as the season progresses.
Turn is a great show. I have to say, Simcoe would fit right in with Game of Thrones, although he'd probably end up like the Targaryen brother eventually. What was up with dude? It was like he was strung out on Meth the entire time. Still, it's a fine cast, and the characters are deep and interesting. I was hoping there'd be a showdown between Caleb Brewster and Simcoe. There needs to be one, now.
Many people (including me) loved having Joffrey around. It was sort of a ticking bomb. You never knew when it would explode and what it would blow up.
EDIT: To avoid unwanted spoilers, I put this in black: (Similar with Lysa, sad to see those two unstable elements go.)
TOIVA, Toi Vaxx, Toia Vix, Toveg, T'vritha, To Vrax: Bring in the Allegiance class. Toi'Va, Ti'vath, Toivia, Ty'Vris, Tia Vex, Toi'Virth: Add Tier 6 KDF Carrier and Raider. Tae'Va, T'Vaya, To'Var, Tevra, T'Vira, To'Vrak: Give us Asylums for Romulans.
I blame the writers' strike from back in the day. Seasons used to be seasons - then they became these random things that ran for less than half the duration that would pop up here and there randomly, leaving one to make all sorts of spreadsheets/break out dry-erase boards to try to keep track of it all. TV never recovered from that.
Rectify (Sundance) - not 'happy', but a search for justice, and introspection. Not 'fast'. Thinky. GREAT acting. And a mystery.
Suits. (USA) Love this show. Lawyers and con-men and lawyer-conmen. What's not to like?
Rizzoli and Isles. (USA) Not exactly groundbreaking procedural, but for the most part, more upbeat than your standard '[possibly horrific] crime of the week'.
Turn. (AMC) (as others have said) Very good show. In fact, anything by AMC is a good bet. Spies
Covert Affairs (USA) This one has its weak moments, but 98% strong story content. More spies.
Archer (FX) (also as others have said). 'Spies' and shenanigans and SOOOO Wrong. 100%!!
Tyrant (FX) looks VERY promising. Also may have spies.
Justified (FX) should be back in a few mos. Few spies here, sorry. Cops in the Deep South instead. No, really, it's good.
The Bridge. (FX) No spies, really. SW US Cops. It's also good, though not 'happy' all the time.
The Americans (FX) just broke for summer. Not happy. But spies.
(Other comedies very much worth watching)
Key and Peele (Comedy Central) (adultish)
Inside Amy Schumer (Comedy Central) (VERY adult)
Boondocks (Cartoon channel).
The Venture Bros. (Cartoon channel). Returning soon.
I COULD go OOOOOOOOOOOON....
There's good TV out there. You have to invest a little in the characters. But here's an alternative. Usually a happy ending, almost no one gets killed or seriously injured (really), lots of drama, sometimes you get extra show for 100% free, colorful personalities, great wardrobe, and some comedy. Sometimes you even get to watch the best parts again, and possibly even from a completely unexpected angle!
Good Old American Baseball.
DVR the other stuff - baseball is LIVE!!
Please reconsider ARC. Please make it optional, at the least. PLEASE.
It seems the vast majority of your most active players (forum regulars) hate the idea... and while that's a small subset of the playerbase, I think it's an important constituency.
THE PLAYERS DO NOT WANT THIS.
For me, I really don't watch that much prime time stuff.
About the only things I'm watching (or will watch) are:
Criminal Minds (reruns)
Top Gear UK (Not interested in the US version at all)
How It's Made/How Do They Do It (Or anything in similar vein on Science Channel)
NASCAR Racing (All three series)
ST: TNG reruns
Current Doctor Who Seasons on BBC America
Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
I'm also waiting on:
Sword Art Online II
Sailor Moon Crystal
RWBY Vol 2
Log Horizon 2nd Season (Fall)
And to the forumite who posted the Yamato 2199 clip, gawd that was a very decent revision of the original.
Thank you for the time...

I'd suggest Community, Suburgatory, or Trophy Wife but people have a tendency to not watch good shows because they're "too smart" or "they don't get them" so they get canceled. Parks and Recreation and The Office clone Modern Family are good, even if Modern Family is over rated. And yes I know Parks and Rec has a similar mockumentary format to the Office as well, but they're developed by the same people and are sort of meant to be that way. The other show however while it does have a great cast and some decent writing, but, and this is jut my opinion it's just not original enough to be considered "The best comedy on TV".
If you have Netflix, Chuck and Firefly are on there, they're both excellent, go watch them.

Thankfully I only watch an hour of TV every few days, so by the time I make it through every episode of every Star Trek series its fresh for me to start over again. So much other TV sucks I've given up on it, and don't even bother checking it out anymore.
some animes are good, but u still cant beat American cartoons from the 80's, the xmen from the 90's and classic WB. and despite disneys rep, the old goofy, donald and chip and dale ones where always fun to watch too. most animes are too girly or in some cases gory.
but ill give credit to trigun, u never know if vash was going to be serious and cool or go into anime mode. always good for a big laugh
Mad Men
Cosmos
Game of Thrones
Orphan Black
Orange is the New Black
House of Cards
Doctor Who
Sherlock
Archer

Not quite fair, half the shows you listed are either netflix originals or can be streamed on netflix, other than cosmos (which can still be streamed) it's paid cable. so none of that really qualifies as "TV"
most of whats stated by others are just clones of other clones (anime and crime shows), necrotic zombies that have no business being regenerated (doctor who) and so goes so far on the point of "sex sells" that its just tacky (game of thrones).
most of those dont interest me in the slightest. that is a rather depressing list.

I think the closest it ever came to exposure was when Luna cast a hold spell on some npc monk and pulled his robe over his head and left him there on the street corner, because the DM's lines for him ticked off her character.
