(depending on spells used, i think mages can be anywhere from melee to artillery range (for anyone who's ever played skyrim, you know the mission where you end up attacking a pirate band at japhet's folly; at the end of it, the whole island ends up getting bombarded with fireballs being lobbed from the nearby ship, likely cast by onboard mages - that was definitely an artillery moment) - usually they try to stay as far back as possible since mages go squish if you so much as sneeze in their direction, however)
