Problem is I have spoken to some of these kids and they seem to think reading is a chore and that is just the wrong impression to give reading and schools just don't seem to help it. So if I can spare some cash I will donate it.

Oh I remember him. I used to watch him when I was younger, along with TGN and The Three Stooges.

That show was one of the better educational programs on that channel.

i hate these type of things .
started by rich people to get themselves back into the limelight,he could probably cover the current amount on his own.

shouldn't need to donate, get the lazy parents to teach them.

Well, you're a sad little man.

Go away and let us have this moment of fuzzy warm feels without your baseless complaints.

Right now Levar Burton is working to better education in this country which is one of the things it needs most. If you can't appreciate what he's trying to do than that is just sad.

Oh wow. Thirty years of teaching kids to enjoy reading isn't enough to make him sincere? He has to bankrupt himself, or it doesn't count?

    You are truly the worst.

I've heard of worse ways to get a Star Trek actor to reprise his role.

... after all, Geordi's ship is already chilling at Earth Spacedock.

Who wants to see the USS Challenger help out Voyager, Enterprise, Bortasqu', and Lleisat in an upcoming FE? I know I do.

STO season 10: The return of the Reading rainbow :D

Anyway, I've seen some kids that just speak in 'leet speech. It's sad, the amount of LoLs and FYIs in schools makes me a sad Bob :(

I also watched Reading Rainbow as a child (anybody else here seen the episode where he takes the show behind the scenes of Star Trek?).

And it just broke $3 million.

That $5 million stretch goal doesn't seem impossible...

Vice-Admiral Geordi LeForge. Has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

    $3.2m and counting!

LeVar is celebrating International Children's Day at the Fred Rogers Center in Pittsburgh, and has a nice video here talking about just how grateful he is, and more importantly that a parent shares a one-on-one story with their children today to celebrate.
Vice-Admiral Geordi LeForge. Has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

I think it does. So does Captain LaForge. I'm thinking the STO team would be interested in bringing some life into the crew of the USS Challenger, and I think some of that lockbox money given to his kickstarter campaign might encourage him to reprise his role.

Nice! Just chipped in on this as well. Where I am, there are some schools in serious need, and major illiteracy problems, so in addition to loving the show, I really want to see them reach that $5 million and stand a better chance of getting in where the need is.

    Same here.

I've never seen the show in my life, but I am a voracious reader (my mother likes to tell the story of the time when I was 16 and walked out into the middle of traffic in Manhattan with my nose in a Robert Jordan epic fantasy novel...) and I support anything that helps bring the joy of reading to children.

Plus, it's got Geordie LaForge advocating for it, and I know from personal experience that LeVar Burton is a great person.

Now at 3.4 million with almost 76000 backers.

Any word yet on what Cryptic's PR department has said or decided on this? It would be so awesome for them to get involved!

Well, how cool is that! Looks like more of the Star Trek cast is jumping on board to help with this effort. :)

As might be expected, these rewards are aimed at the heavy hitters who can help raise a lot very quickly, but I think it is very cool for them to get on board. If you are or you know somebody that this would be in range for, pass it along! :) Everything helps, though, and from the looks of it the backbone of the campaign is still based on those contributing in the smaller amounts.

As part of LeVar Burton's Reading Rainbow Kickstarter campaign, many of Star Trek's biggest names have agreed to participate in a series of public book readings.

They just make this whole thing more awesome with each day, don't they?

I wish I had the cash and time for the Patrick Stewart, William Shatner, and Men of Star Trek things. I wish that they'd gotten Jadzia and Kira Nerys instead of Janeway and Fanservice of Nine, but the Women Of Star Trek is a nice idea anyway.

Anyway. My personal Star Trek preferences aside, this entire thing is just made of so much win. I think that Wil Wheaton mentioned it on his blog the other day, and I just KNOW that he'll get in on the action soon, too.

Still hoping that Cryptic will donate ten grand or so and get us Admiral Geordi LaForge, with voice, and (hopefully) VISOR. The optical implants were cool, and all, but the VISOR is classic and awesome.

Jeri Ryan was much better IMO outside of Star Trek than what the writers forced her into figuratively and literally in Voyager. I actually liked her work in Boston Public, much better than on VOY. From what I've heard, she's a pretty nice person, too. But of course as Seven of Nine, none of that side of her, and almost none of her acting range, were allowed to shine. A shame, IMO.

Jeri Ryan is a fantastic actress. It's just that the Voy writers were very very bad.

Yeah, that was the conclusion I came to when I saw her in another role. I mean...she tried; they had that isn't easy to play a role with such limited range, and when you read about the torture she went through in those catsuits, yikes. I bet you getting on Boston Public was a huge relief to her.

Sweeeet...they cracked $4 million last night!

Also, the prices for some of the Star Trek-related meet and greets appear to have come down quite a bit. Not enough for me, but maybe they could be in range for some people here?

But it doesn't matter how much someone can contribute...even $1 would help with another really awesome record: they are less than 8000 backers away from beating the record for Veronica Mars. It would be so awesome to show that literacy for kids is more important to the public than a movie... :)

I'm one of those who is just barely old enough to remember the very first seasons of Reading Rainbow (i.e. before LeVar was cast in TNG). I watched it all the time until about 4th grade. It's encouraging to see how many of us are supporting the project to bring it back, and I hope to see them meeting the $5 million goal by the time the Kickstarter is over.
