I'm still having the issue (since S8.5 I think), using using steam version. Uninstalled/reinstalled, to no avail.

If anyone is still having an issue with this ( Like I was until today ):

The problem is with the install location of the game from an older install vs. a new install.

In this case, the launcher may be looking for the GameClient.exe in the wrong location.

There are two ways to fix it.

You can uninstall the game completely, from all sources then reinstall. This is of course a long process. It might fix it, or it might not, it depends on how good a job the uninstall does of cleaning up the registry.

For me it did not help. I had to do the below to get rid of the 5-10 minute lag when first logging in.

First - you need to find out where the game is running from.

You can see where the launcher is starting the game from by doing the following:
    • Start the game
    • Alt+Tab to the Desktop
    • Right click the Toolbar at the bottom
    • Open the Task Manager
    • Click on the Processes Tab at the top
    • Right click the Gameclient.exe process
    • Select "Open File Location"

This will tell you what folder the Launcher is expecting to see the GameClient.exe file in.

If the GameClient.exe is not running from C:\Program File (x86)\Perfect World Entertainment\Star Trek Online, then close the game, go to that file location that the GameClient.exe is running from, and copy the Star Trek Online folder to the correct place. ( Mine was running from C:\Users\Public\Games\Cryptic Studios )

    Note:
This could pretty much be in any location depending on where the game was first installed to. (ex. Steam, Cryptic, Arc, etc... )

    ....then do the following:

WARNING: If you do not understand the Windows Registry, you could mess up your computer if you delete or change the wrong thing.
    • Open the registry editor by going to the run prompt and type regedit.exe
    • Click on the top folder on the left side of the window (HKEY_CLASS_ROOT)
    • Go to the "Edit" Menu at the top and choose "Find"
    • Type Star Trek in the search window and click the Find button
    • Check each entry to make sure it is pointing at the correct location in C:\Program Files (x86)\Perfect World Entertainment (Tip: You can hit the 'F3' key to go to the next instance of the search)

You have to be sure you have the correct folder specified or the launcher will try to download the full game again.

If the launcher keeps trying to download the full game, you can do the following
    • Start the Launcher
    • Let it download for a 20 seconds or so
    • Stop the patching and close the launcher
    • Go to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Perfect World Entertainment folder
    • Check to see what folder the Launcher is creating for the download
    • Copy the game files into that folder

This all may sound a little complicated, but it really isn't. You just have to use a little common sense and you can fix the annoying issue.

I know this lag issue was annoying me to no end, and I couldn't find anything that would explain how to fix the problem. So I finally just dug into it, and figured out the cause.

I hope this helps someone with the same problem.
