High CPU spikes

irishxpirishxp Member Posts: 72 Arc User
Hello! :)

I have some serious problems here.
I installed STO in a new pc and created a character (Romulan if it can help); upon loggin in the game stutter and I noticed CPU usage jump to 100%.
After a minute or so it resume playing smoothly, but then again every other minute or so (I'm not making up times, it's really that fast) it stutter again with CPU usage to 100%.

I tried creating another starfleet character, but the problem persist.
I tried to lower quality and resolution, problem persist.
I tried to force the game use only one core, problem persist.
I tried to limit the CPU\GPU usage (as per game Troubleshooting options), problem persist.

I don't really know what else to try, could you please help me?

I haven't mentioned it yet but obviously system specs are more than enough and right now I havent found this problem anywhere else.

    I'm already using steam.
Following an advice I found on pwe faqs, if I "set affinity" through the Task Manager and untick one of the CPU Cores the game doesn't get these spikes anymore.
Although, after this change, the game is visibly.,,, stuttering.
I mean, what I was telling in OP is that the game (withouth the set affinity trick) almost freeze for a minute for every minute I play; after the trick it doesn't freeze anymore but it looks like he has difficult times rendering everything and the games "stutter" (I think it's the best word to describe it).

Hmm, I suppose not many people come into this forum subsection if they don't have problems themselves :)
Is there anyone that can help me? :(

    Tried updating your drivers?

Generally, STO does some weird stuff in terms of rendering and CPU's, but what you're experiencing is pretty extreme... Fun question: if you press escape during the stuttering, so your UI gets replaced by the options menu, does the game still stutter in the background? Won't help you solve it, per se, but will indicate whether it's the UI or just the game in general that's causing trouble.

Other than that, you might want to include your system specs to get some more specific tips. Also, try following the tips in the lag/rubberbanding guide, in the sticky's of this subforum.

Driver wise yes, it's all up to date.

No, I've read something about opening the menu but no, it doesn't help.
The menu opens when the game is not "lagging", and when the time comes, it stutter even in the menu: I suppose it's not the UI.

I'll try posting specs whenever I get the chance to put my hands on the other pc.
Right now I can't see the light at the end of the tunnel :)

That's something I could try, but if it was a steam-related problem shouldn't I suffer from it even when playing other games?
