Run green and blue gear on your under level 50 toons then blues and purples on your level 50s. I think I even have green stuff still on some ships. UNLESS you are PvPing, ALL high end purple MK XII stuff isn't really needed to have a good time in PvE. STF's can be done too with blue gear if you are with a decent team.
This game is pretty PvE user friendly, keeping up with the vet players isn't a priority IF you are NOT PvPing. If you want to PvP at level 50...purple MK XII high end stuff is a must if you want to last longer then 1 shot and even then, you may get smoked in 1 shot.
Besides all stuff in the exchange can either be crafted or gotten from missions in the game. You DO NOT need to buy anything, just go get it or make it.
