My favorite tip is to just use the mouse to run. Hold down both button and hold one finger on W to roll if you have to do an emergency stop somewhere! Also - no need to sprint and remember to start turning before the turns. Also - try and straighten out the route as much as possible. There's a place somewhere where the NPC makes all the turns really wide while you can pretty much just run in a straight line.
The dev blogs say all you need to do is participate every day to get your Breen ship. There's a difference between "participating" and "winning". I'm not getting any credit towards the Breen ship just for losing the race. They might wanna change that.
The ship isn't worth the aggravation running the race. I agree with some people there should be an alternative way to get the portraits besides lobi. I refuse to spend any money for the ship because I don't want to reward Cryptic for making one of the most unfun and frustrating things in this game. The winter event is a solid concept but has such a poor execution. The summer event was so much better.

Are you doing the Breen race or the PVP race? The Breen one is the one for the ship, goes the longer track around the lake, you only have to beat one not-that-fast NPC, and then at the end you go talk to the Breen guy you first got the race from for the reward. It doesn't auto-add to your inventory.
(This part not to the guy I'm replying too, just the topic in general)
Honestly some people are giving up on this way too easily. If there is a certain turn or type of turn you're having trouble with, go back out on the track and just run that turn a few times. "Drift though here, change facing, roll to cancel momentum, accelerate in new direction" till the procedure is just a single action taking all of 3 fingers to execute. On a few of the slightly-wavy 'straights' you can thread right up the middle without ever having to turn till you get to the real turn. Heck you can even get a head start by using the auto-run key and launch 2 seconds before the announcer says Go (though that might be dependent on Willpower reducing the rooting duration, dunno). Or watch some other players and how they handle the areas you're struggling on, note their positioning and when they start turning and how they handle the momentum. Heck if all else fails, ask fleetmates or even Zone, probably find someone happy to help out for the holidays. I mean c'mon, we're a bunch of senior officers who pimpslap tac cubes for fun, a smack-talking Breen should be nothing.
I was at your stage yesterday and I started a thread aptly misnamed - I just can do the fastest game on ice, the can should of been cant oops missed that never mind.
I only managed to get the ship last year due to a bug where apparently you get a solo run (no opponent) and although they have not fixed the bug it does seem a lot more infrequent so I thought I would never get to win against an opponent, how wrong was I.
I thought I will give it one more try today and low and behold I won, not only that I did it twice more with my other two characters the only tips I can give are as follows.
try starting a little early, you can often start on the race countdown just after the 1 and before he calls go!, its not much of an edge but every little helps.
try cutting corners, I thought the lamps at the side of the track were the boundary's but they are not the flag poles are, so you can often cut a little there as long as you don't go beyond the flags.
it also helps to run on the snow a little on sharp corners, don't do this too much as it slows you down a little but if you time it right it helps to stop you sliding.
if you do start sliding sideways just hit the forward button, don't try to turn out of the slide as I find this to be counter productive.
you can also try turning a little early on sharp corners even if it means doing one of the above.
anytime it looks like you have slowed down a little like after a turn or after running on snow don't forget to hit shift.
I have tried doing rolls, jumps and slides on corners but I didn't master these tricks as well as others so I wont mention them here.
the only other thing I can say is don't give up, keep trying even if it ends up that you run out of time and don't get the ship this year, if you do eventually get the hang of it you will be more ready when it comes to doing it next year and if you do get any pics before the end of the event they can be saved till then so you will have a head start on next years event.
i did it! i did it! i did it!
i said - i would not do it,
but indeed i did.
I thought that i would run it;
I doubted i would win it.
But now I must admit it
That succeed i did.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

The race is so incredibly easy and I'm not that good at racing games. Just sprint and when you reach a corner, turn to face where you plan to go and if you start sliding, just double-tap forward (roll) and you stop instantly. Then just sprint again. I never lose the race now.
I find the race easy and just blow though it. Only time it was annoying is when i ran one recently is there was this Gorn player following me hitting my Ferasan with snowballs all though the race. Still beat the NPC, but was annoying to have that distraction.
Though if I get started right after another person as started their PvE race, I can usually almost catch up to their opponent and recently once I even passed the opponent for the person in front of me
I had an idea a few days ago, for people that have issues with the slide affect. They could make "spiked boots" similar to the frosted boots, bought from the event store, and doesn't remove the slide affect completely but counters it a bit so that it's less of a drift.
Hmm ... i run it on 8 toons, in a row ... last year the snowmen attack was a pain ... just stop, shoot and redo afterwarsd ...
This year i noticed the snowmen attack twice occuring around me ... but the snowmen were activly hunting everyone else but me while i was running the race .... they immediatly opened fire when i crossed the finish line ... so in that case ... i suspect they did fix that particular annoyance.
As for some tips on doing it easy/fastest ... only time i dodge is when i react wayy too late due to typing ... but on the whole, maybee once daily (1 in 8)
- My strat .. u can do Shift+R when the countdown goes ... (default keys for run)..
This will make your char start running abit earlier than 0 count.... this gives abit of a headstart.
- Keep the right-mouse button held, to use mouse-steering... and make sharp turns on time.... your char will slide sideways ... peddling towards where u wanna go ... fortunatly cryptic thinks bruises dont happen in 2409 .. so u dont fall on yer face ...
- Sometimes ... toggle between full run & normal run ..(with shift or whatever combo) ... to make it slightly easier on the last part ...
- I do believe u dont need to sprint, and it can be done with normal running ... but being an impatient person ... i challenge myself abit more in doing it full-speed.
So yes ... it can be done with just 1 hand .... i do it daily 8x this year ....
Last year i only had 3 toons i did the race on, because i thought it too difficult ... i missed out with 3 toons there ... and being abit punished this year coz i gotta choose (or pay) for catching up ... it is a fun ship to use ....
Personally ... i think the strain on the wrist from grinding these things is too much ... altho the skating is less strenuous than the floater game (x8) ...
I would prefer that cryptic find a different formula to do this ... or simply a much shorter grind for it .... (25x... really ....)
With a little practice, I've pretty much gotten my ice "skillz" back. I've even managed to take first in "Fast and Flurrious" once and I'm taking third a lot. By the end of the event, I'll probably be navigating FGOI in my sleep.
However...
My two boys are still learning to navigate the ice courses and are failing 3 out of 4 tries, either sliding off course or being overtaken by the NPC runner. They'd be doing even worse if they didn't have me coaching them on how to run the course. So I am seeing that it is not easy for everyone and not very forgiving for the newbie.
It helps to have someone act as your "spotter" so you know whether or not the other runner is gaining on you. If you know you have a good lead, you'll take fewer chances that will cause you to blow the race. Or if you know that the other runner is overtaking you, when to take calculated risks to increase the distance -- because if you're going to fail anyhow might as well fail big.
It also helps to run the course in between races, when there's no pressure to finish. You will learn the course and will be able to anticipate your moves better.
If you utterly lack manual dexterity, run the course anyway. I'm not entirely sure, but I think you stop having to race against the NPC if you fail often enough. Or you might get no opponent through chance. Either way, if there's no other racer you can take your time and complete it.
The runners tend to stay in the middle of the ice, which I believe helps them move faster. If you're constantly on the sides, it's slowing you down. Stay on the blue ice as much as possible and only use the sides when you need to slow down to make a turn.
When the runners do stray from the middle, they always go on the outside of the turn. If you can cut your turns tighter than they do, you can gain more distance on them.

What would the point be? The race is so ridiculously easy already that I win every time and the NPC is about halfway around the course, especially with the big head-start you get. You do realize that you can start running when the countdown is around "2" and be at the first corner nearly by the time the NPC has taken off?
Like "emplehod" said, you just sprint and when you reach a tight corner, just face it and roll. You won't even slide.
The difficult part is having to wait 20 hours to do it again. If it could be rerun immediately, I think it'd take about an hour to win 25 times.

Please Cryptic, have it that when you bunny hop, you slide on your butt!
