no, its more like you then have about 17 pointless days at the end to even participate, because to even get the second one youd need an extra week
then your inventory is down a slot saving for the next year. i dont like clutter.
besides, both ships take equivalent effort, there is no reason to force choice.
They arent "forcing" choice, or clearly they are I mean obviously this entire game should just give you one ship and thats it no other options.
I am happy with the extra days because even if its not extended I can hope they keep all the ships in again next year and I will have 3 ships out of 2 events, or just a head start on next year.
Winter race is fine, same as last year. Just remember to anticipate the tight turns and often use the double tap key to roll during those precarious turns, you should be fine.
obviously not the same as the solo race seemed to crop up every 10th race or there abouts last year so if you missed it there wasn't a long wait before it cropped up again.
it was a godsend for me and was obviously put there for players like me who couldn't beat the opponent.
now it seems like the solo race is very rare and if you miss it because the player in front of you got the solo it seems like ages before it comes up again.
ive been trying on and off since the event started and only got it now twice once with fed just after the event started and once with my rom after what seems like about 50 times and then I ended up running off the track due to lag so I still lost.
I think somebody probably complained that other players were getting an easy ride (far from it) so they made it lots more infrequent.
haven't got it at all with my kdf after seems like 100 tries.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
OK you guys misunderstand, I use my mouse macroed for RPG mode... FP Mode is useless to me.
also the problem is just that I have trouble doing it, to do it, I HAVE to use my left hand, a hand which is fairly mangled from Iraq, as the Macros do not have a way for me to do everything as fast as needed for the event.
Right now, I am trying to guide my toon, down a sliding hillside with the mouse, and guide his directions with the keys on the side of the mouse.
Now this normally isnt such a big deal, I might not get there first but I will get there, and I am pretty decent at moving around in STO's ground game. However, given that reaching accross the keyboard, actually causes me physical pain, I find it ridiculous and insulting that the devolpers would allow the only other option to be "buy Master Keys, to earn a chance at lobi (2-15 a shot, average of 4.6), then spend that to earn a chance at getting Q Photos to turn in for the ship (Average chance is 2-6, so generously 3.5) and to earn that much Lobi, I'd open an estimated 316-375 lock boxes.
For the record, that's 290-320 (estimating conservatively) purchases of the 5 Lobi each photo package.
and to earn that much Lobi, I'd open an estimated 316-375 lock boxes. For a total, alternate route cost of Real World Cost of $395 - $468.75.
And this is suppose to be the reasonable work around? How about this Cryptic, MAKE AN OPTION VIABLE FOR THE PLAYER WITH A DISABILITY WITHOUT IT COSTING MORE THEN MY CAR PAYMENT!
This was done to allow people from last year who didn't finish picku and complete last years ship.
In the effort of them being nice this years folks get a choice.
Consider yourself lucky as I think its a great everyone gets a choice this year.
I agree. I didn't finish last year but I have since used other ships and prefer ships that are appropriate to my faction anyways. Saves me a lot of grinding. I'm ENJOYING the winter event like it's a holiday party and not a job. The only thing I want are those frosty boots to use on the Dyson and maybe an outfit or two.

Simply put, people with visual problems have trouble distinguishing the new consoles. Which was supposed why they were changed, but only made things worse.
I still can't distinguish the tac and eng consoles to this day. I've pretty much given up hope that we'll actually have icons that do what they're supposed to do. They really did make it worse.
Ok... I am also in the boat that this is something that I just cant do...no matter how hard I try. And with games I am OK that there will just be something I am not good at....
My issue though is that after failing 5-6x in a row, I am frustrated, a bit angry and simply done. The holiday event becomes more annoying than fun. My issues have nothing to do with getting a ship or not
That's the problem for me. I shouldn't be getting frustrated and angry at something that's supposed to be a jolly good time.
Just like in previous years it was fun for a couple of minutes and then turned into drudge I want no part of.
I really cant imaging having to suffer thru it 25+X.
You don't even have to jump mid-air, just don't sprint. I would also suggest running on the snow as much as possible, instead of running on the ice. It will prevent you from sliding. And when you have two turns ahead of you, don't try to negotiate them, just run straight ahead without turning.
Yeah, one of my favorite tricks is to hug the edges of the track. It takes skill and precision, but I've managed a few runs where I sprinted virtually the entire race. doing that and bunny hopping is enough to win reliably.

last years event was great and I think most of this one is too.
I thought the pie eating contest was a good bit of fun and the gingerbread event is great, I picked up a gingerbread pet for my rom and a piece of coal for my kdf that turns him into a snowman in that event.
I enjoy the snowball battle on the lake as well.
its just this race that is not making me frustrated or angry, just very sad.
where unlike last year when I was able to get the ship for my kdf and fed though not easily but with repeated tries till I got the solo races.
I fear that they have made the solo race so rare that I will not be able to get a ship for any of my 3 characters.
despite trying all the ways that have been suggested in this entire thread iam just not able to do it.
if they just made the solo race crop up about every 10 or so races like it was last year I am sure I could.
When I think about everything we've been through together,

I keep seeing this "solo" race...what do you mean?
You talk to the race coordinator Breen at the gazebo then run done to the race starter Breen
I keep seeing this "solo" race...what do you mean?

It has a once every 20 hour cd attached to it
each time the race is run there is a different character (opponent) that you compete with, sometimes a spider, sometimes a breen, I think I have spotted about a dozen or so different ones.
then every now and then after you have waved at the race starter and you appear on the track - behold no opponent appear in front of you, you can now take a leisurely stroll around the track and even be passed by the player who takes the race after you and his opponent and no matter how long you take you will win.
that is the solo race.
last year this seemed to occur every 10th race or so.
so it took me about 1hr to win with my then 2 characters, not always on my first attempt sometimes on my 2nd, 3rd, or 4th attempt sometimes more but always within 30 mins.
this year its more like every 200th race that it happens which is not very useful for anyone who has a limited time to play, and cant get the win against an opponent.

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

My goal:
#1: each of my 3 RR chars needs a snow gun
#2: each of my 3 RR chars needs frosted boots
#3: each of my 3 RR chars needs a Nano
#4: fleet decoration project
Have you tried just running the whole way? Thats my method, and I never loose using it.
Bssically, whenever you get to a turn, use your miuse to face back the way you came to brake your slide, then turn in the direction you want to go. It takes a run or two to judge when you need to "brake" and to change direction, but once you have it, it's essy as pie.
It's a bug. Sometimes an opponent doesn't spawn. Luck of the draw.
I don't think it is a bug, bugs that give players an advantage are normally fixed within a few hours (example being the Narkada Tribbles hourly cooldown)
Not everyone is good at racing games, I find it pretty hard and frustrating too, and not fun at all. I completed it last year for the Chel Grett, but there is nothing that will ever make me do that race again, I will pass on this Plesh Brek instead.
I think there should be alternative ways to participate in the Winter Event each day and still earn the 40 Q pictures, don't force people to do the same boring race everyday. Doing the race should still be an option, but you should be able to choose to do the other race or other tasks like kill x snowmen or something.
Ok enough. Tried everything, sprint on the sttraights, jump/turn/tumble at the turns...
There must be certain tricks or styles of play or keyboard mouse layouts or just plain mario skills I'm not aware of. Starship battling is about as much action gaming as I wanted.
I wish there was -something- for those of us less coordinated, even a trainer of some sort.
Onward to other things STO. Maybe I can pull some GPL from the winter invasion goodie trade-ins or something...
Same for me.. besides being kicked from server every few minutes, and one of the races being bugged, the other one was impossible, tried it 7 times and always got out of the track... got better things to waste my time with tbh.
I hate finish of the fastest game on ice! I got to the third position only because someone that was 2 m behind me took the 2. flag first!
Make up your mind, which race are you talking about? There is no "third" position in The Fastest Game on Ice, since the only racers are you and an NPC. Or are you admitting you're so bad you came in third out of two racers?
Should help the less sliding competent people are fair bit if going slightly off the course didn't disqualify them.
Let's just do away with the entire "course" business and go full-on Special Olympics: Say "Hi" to Q, and get all your rewards. You showed up, you signed up, you're a winner.
...or let's just not and say we did.
Gotta run, got 10 characters to go win this race for again.

Also, rolling (double tapping forward or to side) will stop momentum in you are in danger of sliding off.
And you can go over snow patches on curves to stop sliding a bit, the bits that stick onto track.

They're insisting that there's a deliberate "solo" mode to The Fastest Game on Ice, where you don't have an NPC opponent.
Never seen such a thing outside of glitches myself, so apparently they're asking for their favorite exploit to be legitimized?
