Now that I've been playing again for a couple of weeks...

1. Maybe I'm misremembering since I was away from the game for so long, or maybe it's because I looked at it in the KDF mission window, but there seems to be fewer Cardassian missions.

If so, good. That series was kind of a slog.

2. Speaking of that: Needing to wait until level 24 before KDF and KDF aligned Rommies getting access to all of the dailies and Doffs while Feds are good to go by lvl 11? Not cool.

3. Why the Tovan hate? Is it just because he's forced upon you? I'd be happy to have a chummy Federation first officer who would remind me that my Boffs were more than just meat shields during ground combat.

4. In my time away I had forgotten that double XP is a trap unless you already have other characters with heaps of EC to buy gear with. I blasted through Commander with my Romulan captain and found out that I hadn't earned enough cash in my headlong rush to fully gear up.

My face was green with shame.

5. Sphere of Influence. When it gets added to the regular mission listings, I wonder where will it go? When you hit lvl 40 makes sense due to the carrier, but I recall that happens in the middle of the Cardassian series as well. Before heading to DS9? Hmmm.

Folks only hate him because he cannot be removed from your roster, ever.
You know Cryptic has Jumped the Proverbial Shark when they introduced Tractor Pulling to Star Trek Online! :D

There is still as many, and even more if you haven't played since they added the Dominion FE. And more for the KDF, as they needed them to lvlup.

    Leftover from before LOR.

Because we can't remove it from our roster. And because he is mandatory for some dialogues, even when he is not a ship BOFF and not part of the away team. It's like he is not on the bridge or with you, and he suddenly feel the urge to talk to you.
I like Tovan, but it's true it feel "forced" on the player.

    3. Tovan

There's lots of threads in the romulan gameplay subforum. Forced on us, cant be dismissed, etc.

My main complaint with him is that he talks too much and sometimes he even tries to 'steal the show'. And his 'suggestions' at times sound like thinly disguised orders. I know that probably wasnt the devs intention when they wrote his dialogue, but thats what it comes off as to me.

Without giving away spoilers...one thing he did that really pissed me off is when we captured a bad guy. We fought through the ship, captured a bad guy and put a force field around him. But guess what happens? Tovan comes out and starts talking "ok mr bad guy, we have you trapped...now lets hear you talk, oh noes what is he doing". Then there is another one where you are all alone, but yet there he is talking to you 'in your head' i guess. Come to think of it that parts actually pissed me off the most. You are all alone, you did something bad against your will, and here is Tovan passing judgement "why did you do that?" as in how could you do such a thing.

The concept of a vocal first officer/boff or even one with personality is a good one. But if the dialogue is crappy or the VO work isnt good then it kinda sucks. Like when you are surveying Dewa and Satra is giving her feedback and observations, i thought it was done pretty well. But something like rescuing Hiven and you find his dead brother. And he is like "i wont let them get away with this". Instead of sounding like someone that just lost a brother and looking for revenge, he sounded like an emo teenager that just got beat up by a bully. Tovan has good moments and bad moments (just like emo Hiven) but i mostly just tune him out now.

During this mission, it would have made a lot more sense to have yourself speaking... well, to yourself.

I have leveled a Fed Tac to VA and a Fed Sci to RA (VA tonight) during the double xp event. I have not purchased a drop of ship equipment, about the only thing I change on the default setups the ships at each level come with (I'm gold) is to slap on the retrofit beam array from one of the devidian missions. I generally go without consoles, only use those that are award from the story line missions or that are drops (on the Sci, I only have a mk ii distributed energy tac console, the mkii shield sci console from saving the azura, and a mk vii graviton gen sci console received as a drop, all currently on a Tier 5 deep space sci vessel). I have had absolutely NO PROBLEMS leveling. Do things die quick? No. But with proper BOFF setups, I have not even dropped below 85% hull on the sci (focused on defensive abilities, High Yield and BFAW on the Tac boff)

On the Tac, selected escorts all the way, purchased no equipment also, switched for the retrofit array. For boffs, went with Tac Teams and Attack Patterns on the Tac Boffs (so everything was boosted), defensive on the Eng and Sci boffs (2x EptS, HE, PH, TSS). Only bought white MXI DHC's and turrets (and white XI consoles) once reaching VA.

No problem leveling fast with the default space gear. Following the story lines, you spend a lot of time on the ground anyway (I did purchase level appropriate white gear for the ground).

With the Tac and the double XP, I was VA by finishing the Klingon Front and all the Sirius and Regulus patrol missions.

My second romulan that went through that mission, i was actually getting really annoyed with him. I wasnt in a table flipping, keyboard crunching or monitor punching mood but i did slap the headphones off of my head when i had enough of him.

But yah I agree...hell a lot of instances when Tovan butts in could have been left out and it could have been you.

The Klingon Tutorial showed how to handle it better. You recieved a few Boffs that were essential to the storyline, but which you had a choice of dumping afterwards.

I stopped playing a few months before LOR. Must have just been a faulty memory then.

    Leftover from before LOR.

That is a mistake that needs correcting.

He seems to be that way. I gave him the emo haircut which makes me smile and perhaps that's why I haven't felt like he's intruding.

I was really happy they gave us the option to not have the ridges. I know it's Star Trek and evolution happens due to plot, two thousand years seems a bit too fast to evolve forehead armor.

I took that as Tovan being the last good thing remaining in your live before the invasion and thus him representing the good side of your nature, and Sela representing all the dark nasty stuff they brought out in you. Not just the conditioning but your new life as someone with a death toll of thousands on their hands.

I would have had the both of their models following you around like ghosts to be a bit more blatant about them being your shoulder angels. But I don't run a multi-million dollar gaming company.

Well you're right, the original Cardassian missions are a slog (the worst in the game, IMO, which is a shame since I'm a huge DS9 fan). I think there's so much more content now than there was at launch, it's easier to overlook those missions.
You're right. The work here is very important.

I'm pretty sure the KDF have always had less of the Cardassian missions.

I like Tovan. He's got a bit more personality than any of the Federation or KDF Boffs, as have most of the RRF boffs. He's grown on me, but I can understand that some people want their boffs to be their own.

Word is that they're patching it so that you can dismiss him at the end of the Romulan storyline missions.

It happens. Try doing it with two Tac toons with five ships needing guns, shields, engines, deflectors. That's expensive ;)

Tovan is ok, but personally I'd thought that at the end of the LoR arc, he'd be taken to command his own ship since it's obvious the Romulan fleet is growing and they need more captains.

I think he should of been with you for a while then D'Tan says "hey we need more experienced officers like Tovan, with your permission I'd like to give him his own starship to command." Then you have the option of saying "sure" or "no I still need him".

My first Fed toon has his own fleet (with all the bank slots opened) for storage purposes. I've been collecting common gear from each tier and socking them away in that bank so when leveling a toon I just mail them a bunch of appropriate stuff. When they level past it I just mail it back to my bank toon for when I need it again.

We should also get Romulan marks for that. Actually, that would be an immersive way to get marks for any rep tree - sending qualified personnel (as in, rare/very rare Boffs) to the various fronts.

Didn't think of it like that, but hey I like the idea of getting fleet marks for releasing talented officers for fleet duty.

We need more specifics. What dailies and what Doffs?

If I remember correctly the KDF exploration clusters in omega Leoni, the defend the empire nebulas and the pi canis sorties did not open up until around the mind twenties for Romulan KDF aligned player.

im pretty sure the low level pvp que lockout is still in place. after kdf had their start level raised this was put in place by i think borticus, because low level feds had the option to que KvF, but no K existed at those lower levels anymore. that lock out never got removed when the start level went back to 1. and all associated wrappers and dailies associated with that.

If you can't dismiss Tovan, can't you make him into a DOFF instead of a BOFF? At least he'll be useful at away missions like 'Trade energy credits for power cells' or 'Turn over contraband'
