So what are the chances that Perfect World will back cryptic studios on a renewal of their contract when a year before its end there is still so much to be desired in pvp? How about pve? Almost 4 years and we still can't get regular content updates outside of once every 6 months. Let alone an actual end game that includes more than just the borg. And what about the return of other space sim titles like Star Citizen or Swtor's new space pvp combat? How will Sto's space combat system and ip stand up? Do you think STO will end in 2015? Why or why not? Leave a comment below and let me know.

Numbers are all that matter... especially the ones with the $ in front.
For Cryptic to keep the game, they have to show profit... which they do... they run very successful lockbox lotteries, ship sales, and so on.
The execs at PWE a) Don't read the forums, b) have never played the game and c) Don't care about content... STO is a line item on a financial report... and as long as its a black line, and not red... they're happy.
Regarding the rate of content additions. . .I actually find 'every 6 months' to be reasonably good for a game like STO. The issue lies in the fact that Cryptic is using months-long reputation grinds to fill in that time, and that gets boring quick.
New content every 6 months is more frequent than other games.
that may be true but lets be honest them games put out ways more for the time it takes them not to say updates that would be the equivalent to one of sto seasons in between them major updates
New content every 6 months is more frequent than other games.
Yeah, providing an MMO with regular content upgrades - even if it's every month, on the month, and so on - is a very impractical goal, and that's not even mentioning the little return for the work on the developer's part.
And why? The playerbase eats up content like a black hole and demands more :P PWE renewing the contract or STO getting another company can't change that reality imo
that may be true but lets be honest them games put out ways more for the time it takes them not to say updates that would be the equivalent to one of sto seasons in between them major updates
I believe that's because Cryptic has a smaller developer team than most of the other competing games. And with what we've gotten, we're lucky they've done so much

Frequently, there's not really a pre-pay option for things like this. If it works like movie rights, there's usually a window of 3-12 months at the end of the term during which you can renew, though video game licenses generally can't be renewed simply by making another game the way movie rights often can.
I think the actual question is will CBS agree to renew the contract with Cryptic/PWE. People have been predicting other space IP's would put STO out of business ever since the game launched, and from what little I've seen of Star Citizen I don't see it as a threat to this game.
CBS has the ability to pull the license, which they've done before several times, from FASA to Activision, most recently with the company that was trying to bring back Star Trek The Experience. The company's license would have expired this year, but it was pulled in 2011 for nebulous reasons. They did not wait for the renewal, they simply pulled the plug on a project that was costing them no money and which had already paid them all the money it was required to for two more years. CBS won't wait for the last minute if they were going to do something like this.
Edit: I'll add that of all the times they've pulled a license, only FASA was over content, and at the time there was no review process (and their claim was that they'd attempted to institute one and were rebuffed, leading to the license being revoked). The entire purpose of the review process is so that they won't have to do that again. Activision was over a baseless lawsuit by Activision, and The Experience was over a funding issue - the new license holder ran into problems that would endanger the attraction even opening and CBS was courting another bid that fell through.
I believe that's because Cryptic has a smaller developer team than most of the other competing games. And with what we've gotten, we're lucky they've done so much

Supposedly being the main problem, since we have little proof if it actually happened or not. But even if it was, doubling a small team would still make it under the average size of other games' developer teams, if I have my math correct

I, a big Fan of Star Trek and Star Trek online, I do not want to see STO die.
If it is going to end at least patch it so that the community that paid money into the game can still play fair enough if I can no longer play with other players, but if we still get accsess to the foundry and I can make my own content I would continue to play this long into my retirement years.
So I am saying right now that I am starting a petition in this thread that I want to see STO continue no matter what!

I'm referencing a discussion with a dev in tts a while back. I believe it was stated the contracts duration to be five years. However I don't think the dev in question is with Cryptic anymore.
And what makes you think that CBS isn't very happy with the way the game is going?
I never said CBS was unhappy. I don't believe Cryptic has made pvp a priority however. And that is something PWE did say they were serious about. PVP still leaves much to be desired and is certainly one of the games more appalling subjects to discuss.
If we're going to do hallucinogenic speculating, These are the type of questions I would be more interested in discussing...

As to your "one other thing...." I agree with the fact that as long as STO is settling its bottom line at the end of its contract it will more than likely be seen as financially logical to run it another "season". But as a player I find many things about the game to be lacking and i'm pretty tired of the " they do more with less" argument concerning their staff. I would rather see the game go to a better staffed team who doesn't continuously need to fix this or that thing when another new thing is added. But thats just my two cents on the subject. This post isn't about me. Its about you. :P

Right now I see the only reason CBS would not renew the contract is if CBS and PWE can't come to terms on how much CBS will be paid for the contract.
As mentioned before, STO is the only Star Trek MMO around, and it's rumored that CBS is tossing around the idea of a new TV Star Trek series, semi-seriously. CBS makes money, a flat rate, off of STO, so as long as that rate is paid, they make money for zero work on their end. Unless CBS gets greedy and demands unrealistic percentages, or extremely large rate increases, or if some other game company agrees to better guarenteed terms, then CBS is going to say yes.
The question of PWE is, how much money are they making off of STO, something we don't know, we just know it's profitable in the short run. If however, in the long run between rate increases with CBS, and the cost of upgrading servers and simple day-to-day expenses looks like they will go from profit to loss, they may pull the plug.
But it would be probably a smarter to simply pay CBS in annual rates, with the option that they can terminate the game and not pay CBS any more money. Then if it goes into the red, then CBS has their annual payment already in place and they made money, and PWE doesn't have to pay them any more.
Cryptic has really no say in the matter. They would be shooting themselves in the foot if they told PWE they wanted to close up shop. It's argueable, but STO is Cryptics top money maker, (though without seeing actual numbers I could argue that CO is).
So generally, it's in everyones interest to renew the contract. Only the question is, can all the people involved with the license agree to how big of a slice of the pie each will get.
Supposedly being the main problem, since we have little proof of it. But even if it was, doubling a small team would still make it under the average size of other games' developer teams, if I have my math correct
I believe that the thing is, we should be amazed at what Cryptic has managed to pull off in the last four years...
Getting a game from another company that had 5 years to create it..., but had bupkis after two...
Being able to pretty much create a game from scratch and launch it, with what was left of the previously alloted time frame...
Being hogtied by a parent company (ATARI) for three years, that was very much unwilling to invest in the game at all, and only wanted to reap the large monetary awards coming in, to keep said parent company completely out of hock...
Then having that parent company use Cryptic as a very large selling point to another company, too again, get funds to stave off bankruptcy...
And once selling Cryptic, declare in their adjusted tax reports that Cryptic lost them money.
(another ploy to keep ATARI running)
During that time, Cryptic managed to trickle out a couple of Seasons and small additions to the game, that helped keep it profitable.
Then in a matter of six or seven months Cryptic managed to switch the game over to F2P at the Demand of their new owners with a resulting increase in players.
And since then managed to put out every six months or so, other sizable additions to the game.
(I'm not addressing 'quality' here, that's up to each individual to decide for oneself)
Personally, I find all this pretty amazing.

Actually, Dan Stahl has said on occasion that PWE would like Cryptic to try and make PvP 'better' (my word not His)...
One can deduce though, looking at past PvP data, may have put a crimp on PWE's enthusiasm toward that subject.
Not discounting it entirely, but realizing that it's not really the money-making aspect of the game They should be concentrating on at this point.
I doubt that CBS really cares either way, as long as they continue to get their share of the profits.
And I didn't say you said that, I asked you a question about it, so as to further the discussion toward a more likelier concept.
