Community Members from the 26th Fleet have written a Guest Blog about Starbase 381, a base that has opened for roleplayers who are looking to network with other roleplayers.
It's great to see dedicated role-playing fleets get attention in STO. Before discovering the game, I had a nearly decade long history in Star Trek play-by-email and IRC chat "fleets", so I appreciate what you're all doing for the RP community in STO, even if the majority doesn't.
The current fleet that I'm in, as large and friendly and globally diverse as it is, focuses only on occasional pvp and grinding (as with many fleets), and some of the membership mocks anyone who attempts rp'ing in the game (the strange activities and things said openly on Drozana Station, for example, only adds to the derision and bad reputation that role-playing has in the game). STO, for what seems to be many in my fleet, is just another videogame with numbers, killing, and souless avatars. They forget that roleplay is at the very core of Trek and storytelling in general.
It might be a good idea for people who want to RP as part of a fleet to create multiple chat channels in order to roleplay as a group in any of the social areas. That way you have some privacy.
Can we have free advertising for the many other countless of fleets in STO? Why the preference for just a genre or a group of people while alienating the rest of us....just saying doesnt smell fair to the other dedicated fleets who do the same in STO:cool:
First, I need to thank DeffDog from The Trust for putting me in touch with Brandon. Without you, this project would still be in the back burner.
Brandon, you're the man
We just ask that folks be patient with us. I admit, I kept my own people in the dark about this announcement. So they're just as surprised as most of you. When we opened the base in July, we got trickles of RPers, a dozen here, a dozen there, etc. We just ask that you all be patient with us while we adjust to the numbers we're getting even now.
And be sure to check out the Starfinder podcast mentioned in the blog post! Outstanding stories in classic radio drama fashion!
Yup. We started seeing an increase in traffic about an hour after the blog went live. Some folks are obviously new to role play, and that's great because we all started someplace.
I'm so proud of the 26th! Great things have small beginnings and there's no truer example than my Praetorians. Congratulations on the blog and all your success, Scotty!
I joined up with these guys around April 2013, and I've had a great experience so far. It's a fun mix of people and characters and if you're new to RP or Star Trek Online RP, willing to sit down some and help you improve as both a roleplayer, player and creative thinker.
So far in the last few weeks, we've had player run episodes, events and storylines that feature everything from one of the more intellectual minded characters running a formal lecture and discussion on the Prime Directive, gotten into a running battle with a malevolent rogue planet, and found ourselves trying to bring peace to two less advanced species before it breaks into open war. It's also helped me grow as both a roleplayer and a storyteller and GM, and I've become much more confident working with others in crafting stories and adventures.
It's been a great adventure so far, and both I and my character, Captain Jessie Corvus of the USS Harpe, are glad to be part of it.
The only way that we found we could pull this off, was if we could build a fleet of solid role players that both loved their hobby, and were situated around the globe. then we had to get enough of them to build a solid nucleus. Because of the map caps and the invitation mechanics involved, it's best to have several fleet members responding to requests to come aboard the station at one time. Any less than that and people find themselves doing nothing but answering requests and sending invites. Let's face it, it's a video game, not a second job. Folks will get burnt out and then nothing gets done.
So I had to build the 26th to a point where we have normally, 10 members online at any given time, with 1 to 5 at our lowest points. Our peaks range from 20 to 40 online. The more of us online at a time, the more the work is spread around evenly, is what I'm getting at.
Now, all of that being said, I do have a KDF fleet in the works, but it's still trying to build it's nucleus of players. As soon as that is done, I'm fairly sure we can open that starbase up to the public as well. In fact the young lady I have spear heading that project is already chomping at the bit after seeing tonight's opening for the 26th.
Heres the kicker though- any fleet can do this. In fact I would encourage any dedicated role play fleets on the KDF side to step forward and take on a leadership role in the RP community.
This isn't about recruitment, or fame for the 26th. It's about filling a need in a community that has gone without for far too long. A lot of us have played games where it's easy to bump into other role players. Star Wars Galaxies was famous for it's player cities. I myself learned my RP craft from the creators of Starsider's first RP city, Vagabond's Rest.
If you're interested in helping to bring the KDF RP community together, please send me an email in game, or on my fleet's forums. I'd post the information here, but I don't want to turn this into a recruitment thread.

seriosuly though i dont think you can count on cryptic furnishing KDF roleplayers something like this i think if something like this happened for the KDF the players would have to do it.
Cause common man KDF is still waiting for a new ship and all the KDF gets are idle promises and the old Soon(Tm).
Cryptic has nothing to do with this. The Starbase 381 is the work of players of the community. Find a KDF fleet willing to do this and let me know and we can bring it to Branflakes, and get a guest blog for the KDF.

Yeah your right i read it again and facepalmed after.
Lets just hope that certain group of mad dentists dont crash the roleplayers party
It's nice to see that there is still RP that is alive and well in STO. Kudos to Cryptic for supporting this, but I think there's still much you (Cryptic) need to do and implement in game if you really want to make STO a RP friendly place.
The roleplayers in the chat channel 'SB381' discriminate against non-roleplayers. Don't expect to be treated equally unless you are willing to modify your behavior to suit their preferences. They DO NOT treat non-roleplayers with respect.

I'm unsure where you got that nonsense from. We treat everyone equally, whether you're a roleplayer or not. Besides, why would you even want to go onto a Starbase, dedicated to roleplayers, if you're not a roleplayer?
Long story short, whether you're completely new to roleplaying, or a hardcore roleplayer, we'd love to see everyone. Just don't start ruining the experience for everybody else.
I heard a disturbing report that this star base is an Undine infiltrator training ground and every starfleet captain that board the station is replaced.

We hereby cordially invite you to discuss this report, preferably alone. I'm sure this is nothing but a rumour, and you'll be r-...I mean assured we are a genuine Starfleet installation.
I stopped by this starbase and as soon as I stopped in I was asked to take off my MACO gear too. I replied that was not happening and I basically told them to TRIBBLE off. I recommend to every one to just stay away.

I've seen that too. It's part of their star-base's regulations and is part of the RP experience. I don't know what the huge problem is...
This fleet has open it's door's, literally, for everyone to RP in. The fleet is taking time out of their own plot / story lines to cater to all the MASSIVE amounts of requests to dock. I saw one guy in the chat for 5 hours inviting people in. I've seen people from the fleet stand and be security for the base and chase people rp'ing as "trouble makers" on the base.
Have some class dude. Just because you didn't want to follow their rules, doesn't mean everyone has to stay away. Maybe next time just take the gear off? Who wants to sit in a lounge with a MACO suit on anyways? Makes drinking a little difficult.
For those who see this and are curious, this is a great fleet to RP with. I am personally not with the fleet, but I have been RP'ing with them for about a month. They are great people, will help if you need it, and I appreciate them doing this for the STO community.
The 26th are hardcore roleplayers. Them asking you to remove MACO armor is perfectly acceptable as a rping thing.
If you want to interact with roleplayers, then ROLEPLAY for pete's sake!
I remember once I walked around starbase 39, a Vice admiral, and two ensign players were rping and one of them did not address me by my rank but by a "Hey you".
I rped them to drop and do pushups, and they didn't blink an eye they just did the emotes.
That's how rping works, folks. You immerse yourself into a "realistic" and reasonable expectation based on your environment. If you have rules not to wear MACO armor on a starbase, and in character you refuse? That's fine, but if it's what your character Actually would do. then ask yourself, would Kirk or Sisko put up with guests on his ship/or station refusing to comply with a rule or regulation?

They initially ignore anyone not roleplaying, and if you refuse to roleplay they will refuse to send an invite to their fleet's Starbase. It's that simple...
It hilariously ironic some players pretend to care about Star Trek when their role playing discriminates against people who choose to be different...
The same arguments you are using against me are the same arguments used by racists to justify segregation. The sole fact that I wouldn't role play shouldn't have been reason enough to exclude me if you are not prejudice as you claim.

I didn't realize Pete was the God of roleplayers and demanded Roleplayers only interact with other Roleplayers...
Now that I see this is a religious thing it makes perfect sense for you all to discriminate against non-Roleplayers.
You are even telling people what they can wear and what they cannot wear! I really couldn't help you all be more fascist.
Starbase 381 will fail as soon as everyone is tried of following some kid's arbitrary rules...
OK Colour me "thick" here but I don't see the problem. Life, not just MMO's, has rules.
I've been turned away from nightclubs before for wearing trainers, doesn't mean I'd be recommending everyone in town boycott the place? Its a rule. Pure and simple. And its a rule out here in the fresh air (well almost :P) of real life(tm).
Life has rules to follow, as do some fleets. You have that wonderful thing called "freewill" that allows you to decide if you wish to follow those rules or move on.
I'm not a role-player but I respect that they have a code of conduct and rules that, should I wish to visit them, have to be followed. A lot of non RP fleets do to.
And I'd recommend NOT going to a bar in a MACO/Omega force suite....its a devil getting that Pinacolada straw through a helmet
