I saw this blog and half thought, yeah maybe I'll have a bit of fun and do some casual rp and play the characters I am rather than them being merely a tool to pew pew with. So what I'm going to say is someone who isn't a hardcore rp'er but will get in the spirit of it to make STO a more fun experience but not dominate what is after all a game and that's where I'm coming from.
I take the comments from those saying to stay away with some degree of caution as it could be them that's causing the problem although when more than one starts saying the same thing I take more notice. I'm definitely not someone to go "Bad comment! Right okay that's a no go then".
I won't judge the fleet's policy/rules it's their thing and it's up to those joining to agree and join or disagree and not join. That being said I've looked over the blog and don't see any hard set of rules to follow or a certain level of rp to join so I would use a degree of common sense. This issue of MACO wearing does concern me. Yes I can see it being weird wearing it outside of a mission but maybe there's an rp reason for it but I can't see how wearing a helmet negatively affects anyone else and shouldn't be discriminated against.
It's this sort of thing that then starts to give me second thoughts about joining. I ask myself what other rules could they have that infringe my interpretation of rp even if helmet wearing wasn't an issue? Is running a no no too? Should I avoid the hassle of coming up against rule after rule to the point it's just not fun? I get it rules are needed to ensure a successful group but if they go too far and tell me how to play the game then it then has the opposite effect and puts me right off.
First and foremost, the results of the blog post have been overwhelming. Since day one, we've been slammed almost 24/7 with requests to use the starbase for networking, and role play. Some of these individuals have not been role players. They usually come running onto the base after getting past 'ATC' and start running all over the place, and jumping on furniture. Bad monkey.
Fire extinguishers and dancing disco bulbs from Risa start popping up all over the place. It gets frustrating and it's a distraction.
Those folks are usually asked to stop, and if they don't they are removed.
We've also had the pleasure of numerous Vice Admirals coming aboard with the assumption that they can order base personnel, or guests around like some sort of master / servant dynamic.
In order to make sure folks are all on the same page, we'll be drafting some guidelines and posting them on our website. The admins from other up and coming OSB projects will be encouraged to chime in as well about guidelines they'd like for us to post.
Thank you all for your interest in the Open Starbase Project
My toon sports a TWoK uniform with TOS Mirror badge. Would that be acceptable to wear, or should I make up something more 2409-ish?
You might want to find a more 2409 look. And Terran Empire characters have been met with distrust and suspicion by guests and base personnel alike. I'd be wary of admitting to be a doppelganger.
I've seen that too. It's part of their star-base's regulations and is part of the RP experience. I don't know what the huge problem is...
This fleet has open it's door's, literally, for everyone to RP in. The fleet is taking time out of their own plot / story lines to cater to all the MASSIVE amounts of requests to dock. I saw one guy in the chat for 5 hours inviting people in. I've seen people from the fleet stand and be security for the base and chase people rp'ing as "trouble makers" on the base.
Have some class dude. Just because you didn't want to follow their rules, doesn't mean everyone has to stay away. Maybe next time just take the gear off? Who wants to sit in a lounge with a MACO suit on anyways? Makes drinking a little difficult.
For those who see this and are curious, this is a great fleet to RP with. I am personally not with the fleet, but I have been RP'ing with them for about a month. They are great people, will help if you need it, and I appreciate them doing this for the STO community.
We can't all be patsy's like yourself. Good luck to you.
Fleet Admiral of the U.S.S. ATTILA KHAN-CDA (NX-921911).
Hello SB381 and all it's affiliates. I'm a founding member of a fleet called Elite Special Forces. Although most 26th fleet members can identify me as Steve@deathking12211. I am typing this to not only ask for some kind of authorization but to say that my fleet is offering it's Starbase for RPers to hang out just like SB381 and Spectre. Since a number of our members like to RP I believe and fellow leadership will agree that with the other RP fleets we are dedicated to helping all RPers use the SB as a safe haven to RP. We're not fancy like 26th fleet or Spectre but we do enforce the same rules as 26th and will use security in RP manners. We hold strongly against ERPing. So I'm putting this request out there on this Blog and hope one of the people who helped in the original idea reply. They can also get in contact with me in-game @deathking12211
Hope to hear from someone soon.
Sincerely,
Admiral Steve Jacobs

Glad to see the idea is growing, Steve. Please feel free to join the growing discussion on our forums. I've been speaking with several other fleet leaders, and the idea of opening our bases to one another is gaining steam on a daily basis.

I might pop in one of these days.
My retired Vice Admiral likes a drink now and then.
However, I think that one of the things you can do to both encourage people like me and to prevent unfortunate maco armour based misunderstandings, is to provide us with a set of guidelines.
I imagine, as the number of RP starbases grows, that different starbases may want somewhat different guidelines.
However, I'd rather not find out how to avoid a social faux pas by experimentation.
First, I need to thank DeffDog from The Trust for putting me in touch with Brandon. Without you, this project would still be in the back burner.
Brandon, you're the man
We just ask that folks be patient with us. I admit, I kept my own people in the dark about this announcement. So they're just as surprised as most of you. When we opened the base in July, we got trickles of RPers, a dozen here, a dozen there, etc. We just ask that you all be patient with us while we adjust to the numbers we're getting even now.
And be sure to check out the Starfinder podcast mentioned in the blog post! Outstanding stories in classic radio drama fashion!

That's one of the things I've been working on, and asking my fleet to offer opinions on. STO didn't naturally evolve it's own RP Community the same way that other games have. World of ********, Star Wars Galaxies, Tabula Rasa, The Old Republic, et al, all promoted role play from the beginning. If not directly by the developers and community managers, then by the nature of the games themselves. When you logged into SWG, you knew that you could go to Mos Eisely and find some sort of role play, be it seedy cantina RP, or criminal underworld style RP- and that was just in the static NPC cities.
Role play in STO doesn't have that, because we're all on the same server, but multiple-shards. Without a central nexus to congregate, it makes it impossible to actually form community and allow rules, customs and curtsies to form naturally.
I knew this would be a problem going into the project, but we needed to see what we had to work with before the actual community building could occur. Suffice to say, exciting things are happening. Stay tuned to this thread, or join us on our forums for further updates as the OSB expands and evolves.

So the jury's still out for me joining.

Also, Good on brandon for promoting this.
