I believe that the number of ship and account slots that can be purchased should be expanded. I understand about additional space on the servers, but many new items have been added to the game, and it would be good to keep them all. The number of maximum Bridge Crew is very high. What do you think?
How many ships do you need?
My KDF Tac. has damn near every ship available (T4+ anyway) and still has plenty of extra space IF I decide to buy any more.
I suppose for Fed there are 3 or 4 times as many, but unless you decide "I must have all the ships!" I don't imagine this being a problem.
I can't realistically see anybody ever getting more than 25 ships, unless they get & keep all of the lower tier ones...

It's not a matter of server space. It's a matter of how much Social Zones lag when you are playing.
When the "unlimited" was changed down to 28, the explaination given was that part of the problem with the game lacking, was because with no limtations, and the fact that all propeties associated with you are loaded into each map with you.
That means to properly be able to assign enough resources to each instance, they had to be able to calculate the max load on each of them.
Also... you don't need 28 ship slots, 28 BO slots, 28 Uniform slots yada yada yada... Really... You don't.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Have some control man! You don't need every single ship in the game in your drydock. With a few exceptions, ie Lock Box/Special Event ships, you can dismiss and summon at will Cash ships. You can only fly 1 ship at a time and even if you keep a few on hand to jump into, you really don't need all of them on hot standby.

Come on guys. Be nice and support this guys wants. He makes it possible for the rest of us to play for free!
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
The only problem I have with F2P is the people who don't play it properly. i.e. the ones who add to the server load for a few days till they get bored, never really contributing. And the increasing number of players who just cruise through and never quite get up to standard (gear & skill wise), who hinder PUGd stuff.
Other than that, F2P has saved the game from dying off, and resulted in much, much more content for us paying folk.
So, just out of curiosity, which would you prefer? STO with F2P, or no STO ?

I am not going into a F2P pro-con argument, as it's a simple matter of diffrence of opinion and we would never be done... You wan't to derail the thread, fine, go ahead...
But I am here to talk about why there can't at this time be more whatever-slots, and why I support that decision, not about the status of F2P.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...

That is incredibly bad software design. Anything stored in the ship yard, bank inventory, or shared inventory should not load until you access that storage. Otherwise, what is the point in having to go to a specific NPC or terminal location to access those items?
The only things loading into the map with you should be the things you can see when you open the character sheet and personal inventory. But I understand that Cryptic got it all wrong.

This is all based on me remembering correctly, but I remember having the exact same thoughts when i originally read it.

Which was why another MMO added separate processes to the game to deal with those issues, only for it to eat up more memory on your HD.
Well it dosen't have to... There are plenty of software that can load and unload data-arrays on demand, and then clear them out of ongoing process as needed.

I strongly disagree.
What left STO in a sorry state before PWE sunk their hooks into it, was the lack of funding Cryptic recieved from Atari to develop the game.
Atari which was facing bankruptcy was pretty much sucking up virtually every penny for themselves.
I believe that the number of ship and account slots that can be purchased should be expanded. I understand about additional space on the servers, but many new items have been added to the game, and it would be good to keep them all. The number of maximum Bridge Crew is very high. What do you think?
tbh the inventory system of this game is archaic at best.
there are only two reasons you are limited to barely anything in your inventory atm.
Firstly, cryptic cant code for **** thus they will have the aforementioned problems loading EVERYTHING up when you do if everyone has sizable quantity's of items.
Secondly, due to the amount of items in game and the instilled want to be able to have extra sets of items for trying different things for differnt situations not to mention the other currency's you need to keep with you and stuff you want to sell, they know that alot of people are going to feel the burn to purchase more inventory space netting them a sizable amount of cash from folks trying to fulfill a basic need.
all in all it wouldn't be hard to implement an inventory system allowing you to have as much as you want but it would mean going into some god awful scary and fragile code liable to break other parts of the game and i don't think cryptic employees are willing to quite draw straws on that or they already attempted and someone had a heart attack after looking at the code.
In Cryptic's first MMO design players could were allowed 88 free character slots (North America client side) which was later increased to 132 free character slots.
City of Heroes segregated characters by server though. Not an apples to apples comparison.
"Participation in PVP-related activities is so low on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis that we could in fact just completely take it out of STO and it would not impact the overall number of people [who] log in to the game and play in any significant way." -Gozer, Cryptic PvP Dev
They also segregated servers by NA and EU for many years, but that isn't the point. The point is that Cryptic planned/allowed for the expansion of character slots when they designed that game. If you'd like to break it down into individual servers they went from 8 free slots to 12 free slots then later under Paragon Studios they started selling an additional 24 slots per server for a total of 36, and finally raised the number that could be purchased another 12 for a total of 48.
This is just another example of how Cryptic throws everything they learned to do right in previous games right out the window when they start a new game.
So you have no point. Cryptic planned for expansions of character slots in this game as well.

And people have still hit the limit and want more, but apparently the game is making too much money for Cryptic/PWE to raise the limits on ships and characters. :P
Unless the amount is "unlimited" there will always be people who want more. Up until now, at least, the industry standard solution has been to say "get another account." (Yes, this requires buying a whole new set of account unlocks. I don't think Cryptic minds.)

Thank you all for your input. As I surmised, there is no actual reason for the limits except choice. The game includes a wide variety of ships and items, and, if players wish, they should be able to keep what they will. Of course you can only fly one; and wear only one outfit; and carry 2 weapons, etc. at a time. Does that mean you should only encounter these bare minimums in the game? Of course not. But variety can be fun.

That's not correct. There are technical limitations as to the what amount of data is feasible to keep, load and move around on a per-character basis. While it's correct to say that those limitations were "chosen" when the initial implementation was made, there's very little choice involved three years down the line. Short of drastically changing the data model, there may not be any available room for expansion.

Yeah, you kinda do. There's a long-standing bug where discharging a ship causes ALL stations and ALL traybars of ALL your ships to become thoroughly messed up! (Likely because trays/station are done per ship-slot, not the actual ship). This has never been fixed; presumably on purpose (as PWE rather has you buy additional ship slots than be economical with the ones you already have).
So, unless they fix the bug, increasing the ship limit may indeed be called for.

I don't support the F2P idea, so...
If people want it enough and Cryptic can manage it all, than so be it IMHO.
