Just for a bit of fun, what have you named your ships and what reason (if any) did you have for choosing the names that you did?

I'll start with my Saurian Tactical:
* USS Avenger (Starter Ship); the Miranda has, one some fan sites been named the Avenger Class, although my version is more a mix between the Centaur and Shi?Kar.
* USS Centaur (Sabre Class Escort); Simply because I couldn't think of a name at the time, and I didn't desire to have the USS Miranda or USS Shi?Kar.
* USS Pathfinder (Akira Class Heavy Escort); the Pathfinder was one of the names given to this ship in STA2, and I always liked the name.
* USS Valkyre (Defiant Class Tactical Escort); named after the mythological counterpart.

I have the USS O'Neill as my Yellowstone Runabout too. I shouldn't need to explain the choice of name here. ;)

And my Andorian Engineer:
* USS Saratoga (Starter Ship); named after the one Sisko served aboard.
* USS Farragut (Constitution Class Cruiser); I wanted a name that had been used for a Constitution Class as I was using the Constitution model.
* USS Red October (Ambassador Class Support Cruiser); I chose this name because I've always liked it, and became fond of it after watching a film about the submarine with the same name. For some reason, I've always applied it to an Ambassador Class.
* USS Shangri-La (Galaxy Class Exploration Cruiser); named after the mythical location.
* USS Templar (Assault Cruiser); named after the knights with the same name, and the Black Templars of the 40k Universe.
* USS Atlantis (Exploration Class Retrofit); named after the lost city of the same name.
* USS Prometheus (Advance Research Vessel Retrofit); there was a Nebula Class Prometheus before, and I like the name. Add to the fact it was the first Tau'ri named space ship too.

I've also got a Captains Yacht named the John Sheridan (Babylon 5).

...and now, yours

I name my federation ships after the Starcraft universe. I have the USS Jim Raynor, the Sarah Kerrigan, the Queen of Blades, the Zeratul, and the Overmind.

My KDF ships I have named after WWII, like the Iwo Jima, the Bataan, the Normandy, The Witchcraft (a B-25), and the Nine-o-Nine (a B-17). Also I ran out of room naming the Queen Anne's Revenge, so I named it the Quo' Nos Revenge.

Ships commanded by my Vulcan, Vice Admiral G'dessa T'Prell, a Rear Admiral in Starfleet Military Intelligence (in the order obtained):

    - U.S.S. Liberty, a Miranda Light Cruiser with some modifications (self-explanatory name)

    - U.S.S. Luna, a Cruiser, like the Enterprise refit in TMP (name should be obvious to most)

    - U.S.S. Selene, a Cheyenne/Stargazer Heavy Cruiser (both the Greek name for the moon, and the name of Kate Beckinsale's character in the Underworld movies)

    - U.S.S. Sovereignty, a Galaxy Exploration Cruiser like the Enterprise-D (self-explanatory name)

    - U.S.S. Verona, an Ambassador Support Cruiser Retrofit like the Enterprise-C (named for the city and for Silvia Colloca's character in Van Helsing, the first Bride of Dracula) -- I also have the normal Ambassador, still not unpacked.

    - U.S.S. Venerdi, an Avenger Star Cruiser with modifications (Italian for "Friday," the Day of Venus)

    - U.S.S. Thomas Jefferson, a Yellowstone Runabout (because TJ just rocks)

    - U.S.S. Roger Williams, a Rhode Island Science Vessel Refit (founder of Providence Plantation, which later became the city of Providence, Rhode Island; he was an advocate of religious liberty and the separation of church and state)

    - U.S.S. Genova, a Nebula Advanced Research Vessel Retrofit (the capital of the Italian region of Liguria)

Ships commanded by my Orion, Lieutenant General Gessa G'ian the Succuba, Chief of the Department of Military Intelligence for the LGBT of the KDF 1st Fleet (again in the order obtained, as far as I recall):

    - I.K.S. Seduction, a Norgh Bird of Prey

    - I.K.S. Seduction II, a K't'inga Batte Cruiser

    - I.K.S. Seductress, a Vor'cha Battle Cruiser

    - I.K.S. Lodubyal Ot, a Kamarag Battle Cruiser Retrofit (I have the ordinary Kamarag as well, still not unpacked); the name is Kolarese/Kolaric (Orionish) for "Mistress of Pleasure 'Slaves'," since she once posed as such for purposes of espionage

    - I.K.S. Seductress II, a Vor'cha Battle Cruiser Retrofit

    - I.K.S. Tabadi, a Marauder Flight Deck Cruiser (had this for months, since the toon in question is an Orion); the name is Kolaric for "Matriach," as in "female head of a Caj" (a Caj is a "Great Family, Clan, Tribe"), because she is the Matriarch of the Ninth Tribe of Kolari (Orions).

    - I.K.S. Cluros Ot, a K't'inga Battle Cruiser Retrofit; the name is Kolaric for "Mistress of Coolness" (Cluros is an Orion standard of conduct).

    - I.K.S. Kolarivaj, a To'Duj Fighter; the name is Kolaric for "Orion Empire."

    - I.K.S. Temptress, a Phalanx Science Vessel

Ships commanded by my Romulan, Vice Admiral Gessatra ir'Virinat t'Prell, Fleet Admiral of the Tal'Diann (Romulan Military Intelligence) -- again in the order obtained:

    Starships
    - the R.R.W. ch'Rihan, a T'liss Light Warbird -- the Romulan name of the planet Romulus

    - the R.R.W. Senorix, a Dhelan Warbird -- Gaulish name meaning "Ancient King"

    - the R.R.W. Sirona, a Mogai Heavy Warbird -- Gallic Star Goddess

    - the R.R.W. Memenda, a Kamarag Battle Cruiser -- non-canon name of the D7 flagship flown by the female Romulan commander in "The Enterprise Incident" (see also the R.R.W. Susse'Thrai, the A.R.W. Sienae, the R.R.W. LivianaCharvanek, and the R.R.W. Di'on Charvon).

    - the R.R.W. Senua, a D'deridex Warbird Battle Cruiser -- Gallo-Brittonic Goddess name variation, means "The Ancient One"

    - the R.R.W. Ssaedhe, a Ha'apax Advanced Warbird -- Romulan for "Steadfast"

    - the R.R.W. Susse'Thrai, a Koro't'inga Battle Cruiser D7 -- Romulan for "She-Wolf," an appropriate name for a ship that looks like the flagship of the Romulan commander who almost seduced Spock (see below under the R.R.W. LivianaCharvanek)

    - the A.R.W. Sienae, a Mirror Ha'feh Assault Warbird -- Romulan for "Talon" (it should be noted that the same non-canonical source for the name "Memenda" also called that ship the "Talon" -- although "Memenda" is not found in the Romulan language sources I use, which give "Sienae" as a female Romulan given name meaning "talon").

    - the R.R.W. LivianaCharvanek, a T'varo Light Warbird Retrofit -- named for the Riov (Romulan Fleet Commander) Liviana Charvanek (then known as Di'on Charvon, although neither name is canonical), who led a squad of Romulan D7 Battle Cruisers in an effort to seize the Starfleet Flagship, the U.S.S. Enterprise N.C.C. 1701, then under command of Captain James T. Kirk, whose First Officer was Commander Spock, later Ambassador Spock. (This is my current flagship.)

    - the A.R.W. Dhael'Temarhkh, a Mirror Ha'apax Advanced Warbird -- Romulan for "Nocturnal Bird"

    - the R.R.W. Eshaeno, a T'varo Light Warbird (recently got this for the console, so I could put on the T'varo Retrofit, which I have done with delightful results, and have not even taken the Eshaeno out of spacedock yet) -- Romulan for "Ferocity."

    Small Craft
    - the R.R.W. H'Levreinnye, a Tiercel Shuttle -- Romulan for "Love-Devil" or "Lust-Devil" (a Romulan term of endearment).

    - the R.R.W. Ri-Hhvaeh, a Kestrel Runabout -- "Spy" (more literally, the "Female-Spy," this is a term that can only be applied to a living being, so it seems odd that a spacecraft would be given this name, but the runabout was named for the woman commanding it, since Admiral t'Prell is herself "the Female-Spy").

And that's an old Romulan ship list, before I got the 3 dreadnoughts (whose names I haven't picked yet, since I'm still outfitting them and have yet to take them on their maiden voyages) and Mirror Ha'nom (not even unpacked yet).

    Edited with addenda et corrigenda.

    Slight update, 2 Sept. 2013:

Gessatra now has these additional ships (in the order obtained):

    - the R.R.W. Ri'Alha (Romulan for "Miistress"), an Elachi S'golth Escort.

    - the R.R.W. Ri'Unhaiynen (Romulan for "Temptress"), a R'Mor Temporal Science Vessel.

    - the R.R.W. Hvei'Khenn (means "Storm" in Romulan), a Tal'Shiar Adapted Destroyer reskinned as a Tal'Shiar Enhanced Destroyer.

She has also named her Tulwar:
    - the R.R.W. Di'on Charvon (see above under "- the R.R.W. LivianaCharvanek" for an explanation of this name).

    Sight edit, 2 Sept. 2013:

Added some formatting (and a few additional notes to the older portions of the post, as well as a fleet rank update to my Vulcan).

I like to name my ships from authors of books or science people, like:

    U.S.S. Borquez - Spanish writer.
    U.S.S. Asimov
    U.S.S. Clarke
    U.S.S. Burrows
    U.S.S. Mauricio Andres (that's my son :) )
    U.S.S. Fermi
    U.S.S. Eisenberg
U.S.S. Engelbart (inventor of the mouse)

Nebula Retrofit: U.S.S. Aurora.Reference to H.M.S Aurora, a British warship named after the Roman Goddess of the dawn

Excelsior Retrofit: U.S.S. Agincourt. Named after a famous English victory over the Frenchies. :D

Armitage Heavy Escort Carrier: U.S.S. Ark Royal.Famous British Carrier.

Mirrror Universe Advanced Escort: U.S.S. Avenger. Named after the NX Class ship in Enterprise "In a Mirror Darkly". The one that got destroyed. Happens a lot to me with this ship and bargain basement equipment.

    Scimitar Dreadnought: R.R.W. Imperator.
    (Historical Terms)
    a. (in imperial Rome) a title of the emperor
    b. (in republican Rome) a temporary title of honour bestowed upon a victorious general.

Falchion Dreadnought: R.R.W Vindictus. Named after an MMO but kind of Roman sounding too.

    Fleet K'tinga Cruiser: I.K.S. Suvwl'qul (Fire Warrior)

K'tinga Cruiser: I.K.S. Rol taj HeH (Razor's Edge)

Mirror Vo'Quv Carrier: I.K.S. Bel tuq (Pleasure House). My Orion uses this ship to haul Federation prisoners off to Rura Penthe. Ship title is a bad joke.

Phalanx: I.K.S. QIj Hov (Black Star). Babylon 5 thing. Sue me.

Marauder Cruiser: I.K.S. Toy'wI''a' wa' (Slave One) Boba Fett thing, yet another Orion Marauder/Slaver ship.

(My main) Galaxy class, U.S.S. Iron Lady because I like Margaret Thatcher (let's just agree to disagree, okay?) and thought it sounded like a good name for a ship.

(KDF) Kar'Fi Carrier, Dukh Nu'qem because if I'm gonna be a bad-TRIBBLE space pirate, then who's more fitting for bad-assery than the (once) great Duke Nukem?

(ROM) Daeinos Heavy Destroyer, R.R.W. Rhai'hlan which means "defiance" in Romulan, as my liberated Borg captain wants to make a point to her former captors.

I also have the Lutece, the DeWitt and the Comstock laying around.

EDIT: Oh, and my captains yacht is named Everage after Dame Edna :P

My first fleet was the Federation Colonial Militia, so in the spirit of sovereign colonies working within the purview of the Federation, I named my primary ship the U.S.S. Federalist.

When I decided to make a mirror universe counterpart of my toon on the KDF side, it natrually followed that I would name her ship the I.K.S. Imperialist.

With my Romulan toon, I decided to name my ships all within the motif of 'the great birds of the galaxy: I started with the R.R.W. Cygnus, followed by the R.R.W. Corvus, the R.R.W. Apus, the R.R.W. Grus, the R.R.W. Pavo, the R.R.W. Columbia, and finally my veteran ship the R.R.W. Aquilla. I call my scout ship the R.R.W. Tucana.

KDF Peghqu is I.K.S. Y'tang. Y'tan was the default name when I got it, but I added a "G" on the end because Tang is good. I grew up on that stuff lol.

Rom Fleet Dhael is R.R.W. Emerald Sky. No real reason, I just thought it sounded cool. :P

My FED and KDF toons ships are based specifically on places from The Elder Scrolls

Fed: Dedicated to Provinces/territories within Nirn(the planet TES takes place on)

    Yellowstone: U.S.S. Stros M'kai
    Risian Escort: R.X.S. Akavir
    Mirror Assault Crusier: I.S.S. Daggerfall
    Breen Chel Grett: U.S.S. Elsweyr
    Support Cruiser Retrofit: U.S.S. Morrowind
Fleet Advanced Research Vessel Retrofit: U.S.S. Valenwood

KDF ships are named after planes of Oblivion except for the Risian Escort because as Sky Marshall Tehat Meru put it in Starship Troopers, "We can ill afford another Klendathu."

    KDF:

    To'Duj Fighter: I.K.S. Gaiar Alata
    Risain Escort: R.X.S. Klendathu
    Breen Chel Grett: I.K.S. Blackmarsh
Kamarang Battle Crusier Refrofit: I.K.S. Moonshadow
    Vo'Quv Carrier: I.K.S. Quagmire
    Mirror Vo'Quv Carrier: A.K.S. Coldharbor
Marauder Flight Deck Cruiser: I.K.S. Shivering Isles

My Rommy girl is all but gracious to let the RNG give her her ship names until she finds one she likes... at which point that ship will be named R.R.W. Jarok's Dream as per her Bio esplains her admiration for Admiral Jarok.... Romulan defector to the Federation who sought nothing more than peace.

I typically try to name my ships U.S.S. Folly. There's a story I like on the Chakats Den that follows a freighter by that name. The ship is said to be impossible by any 'Fleet engineer that sees it, but it goes faster and further on less fuel than nearly any other ship and while unarmed has never been borded by pirates.

I don't really know how I got into this theme, but it started a couple years ago when I named a ship the USS Vindicator. I followed it up with an engineer in the USS Judicator, and an IKS Devastator. It's continued with an IKS Infiltrator and RRW Instigator... and finally jumped the shark when I thought better of a T'varo named RRW Penetrator.

On my Tac I got a theme going on.

    U.S.S. Amazon (NX Escort Replica)
    U.S.S. Banshee (Sabre-class Escort)
    U.S.S. Succubi (Akira-class Heavy Escort)
    U.S.S. She-Wolf (Defiant-class Tactical Escort)
    U.S.S. Siren (Dervish-class Patrol Escort)
    U.S.S Shewolf-A (Defiant-Class Tactical Escort Retrofit)
U.S.S Valkyrie (Imperial-class Fleet Assault Cruiser Refit)

Need I add that my Tac is a female with an all-female crew? :P

My Engie also has a theme of sorts.

    U.S.S Ilmarinen (Constitution-class Cruiser Refit)
    U.S.S Vainamoinen (Cheyenne-class Heavy Cruiser)
    U.S.S Ilmarinen-A (Ambassador-class Support Cruiser)
    U.S.S Ilmarinen-B (Galaxy-class Exploration Cruiser)
    U.S.S Ilmarinen-C (Sovereign-class Assault Cruiser)
    U.S.S Ilmarinen-D (Regent-class Assault Cruiser Refit)

For those not in the know, Vainamoinen and Ilmarinen are both characters in the Finnish national epoch "Kalevala" as well as the two biggest ships the Finnish Navy ever had. Also note a theme of ships sharing classes with ships named "enterprise" having the name if Ilmarinen and the outsider being Vainamoinen :P

U.S.S. Thetis (Nebula)- Named after the mother of Achilles.

U.S.S Olympia (Advanced Escort)- Named after the flagship of Admiral Dewey during the battle of Manila Bay. Dewey is the highest ranking admiral in U.S. history and he was from my home state of Vermont.

U.S.S. Prinz Eugen (Heavy Escort Carrier) Named after a German heavy cruiser. It had a colorful history of being one of the few if not only German capital ship to survive the war. Landed in the hands of the Americans and was nuked twice at Biikini Atoll and didnt sink.

I.S.S. Mark Antony (Mirror Deep Science Vessel) Named after the Roman General. I love the miniseries "Rome" and Mark Antony is a boss in it.

I think my favorite is my Caitian Atrox Carrier called USS Schrodinger.

For my science officer, I named all my ships after scientists, ending with that one.

Not to mention Schrodinger's famous cat thought experiment, so rather apt!

    Back on topic:

ShiKahr Class - USS Essex - County where I live
Excalibur Class - - Can't remember as I didn't have it long and to tell the truth pretty forgettable
Stargazer Class - USS Thames - Nearest River to where I live
Intrepid Class - USS Hermes - named after the messenger of the gods and taken from the Star Trek Tech Manual (SFTM) named after NCC-585
Prometheus Class (with Phoenix saucer) - USS Essex-B - I decommissioned the ShiKahr and named this ship after her, my first ship :P

Those are my primary ships I have been using but I also have:

USS Aldrin - Yellowstone Runabout - named after the first man to speak from the moon!!!
USS Corvus - Danube Runabout - named after the Mk-VIIb scout class ships from the SFTM NCC-620 supposedly used as command and diplomatic courriers.
USS Lancaster - Support Cruiser - named after the WWII bomber
USS Jupiter - Sci refit - once again named from the SFTM NCC-1734 (I know it's in the heavy cruiser class but I like the name :))
USS Beagle - Nebula class - as an advanced research vessel I named it after the ship Darwin used on the voyages he used to develop his theory of evolution.

    So a mixed bag really.

    Forgot to add:

Rom character: RRW Bloodwing II named after a ship from a Star Trek paperback story
KDF character: IKS BorCha - doesn't have a translation into English but thought it sounded Klingon and good.
