there was nothing about any of the old ones that said "this is a tactical console". They were all just random objects with no connection to each other or the damage type they boosted. Memorization was the only way to know that it was even a tactical console.
That's why I suggested using card-collectible-game formatting in the quoted post to preserve unique item images while still presenting its relevant game information. Replacing the item's original image only leads to the mass-confusion we're seeing now, but all of this could have been averted had Cryptic simply changed the console icon formats without dropping their unique identifying images.
There are many ways to convey an item's function, but changing all icons into nearly the same picture is not a good idea since it has so many negative strings attached.

"Mass-confusion"? I think that's overstating it. I've seen very few actual complaints about it in game.

Besides the hyperbole, what do you think about the CCG-icon format suggestion? It seems to be a good compromise -- preserving old icon recognition while presenting item rarity, grade, and purpose.

Rarity and grade are in there already with the color glow and MK level. That being said I liek the idea of using shaped frames (like doffs) instead of a glow effect.
One thing I remember about MTG is that it's rather easy to make a deck with unique arts for all the cards, but to actually use multiples. So I don't see it as a good example. I mean seriously.... I think there may be up to 100 arts for each basic land card.
I do like the idea of moving the icon for the damage type to somewhere it would be easier to see though.
There is a form of CCG-like work at play in the icon:
The icon itself is the artwork. The rarity mark is like it having foil or whatever your preferred CCG uses. And then, the tooltip and full info are the actual text about what the console (or card) does.

The background hue / glow option is proving to be a big hindrance for those with color blindness or other vision issues, which is why I suggested using frame colors / shapes to better address them. This also allows game data be to presented independent of which item image is used.

Using different graphics on the same item type need not be done, but the option is there for adding visual "flavor" to specific episode or race-modified drops. It certainly opens up many possibilities for upcoming items like the multi-stat tactical consoles.

The elements are there, but they are just not being presented in an optimized manner. A CCG-style format cleans up STO icons so that any player can recognize them without depending exclusively on color matching.
Well, it is just my guess ahm.. But we are way over 500 posts here and I don't think
that any Dev is interested in our opinions any more after they changed them already once
at the beginning.
We didn't get ANY response from a Dev since New Icon Day last week.
But maybe it is because that the lead people are busy talking and giving high promises interviews to Blogs, Internet Radios and magazines instead responding to the money payers.

Nah, it's more likely that the devs haven't come up with anything they want to say yet.

I did, especially on Thursday with ESD and Private chats. Just because people aren't talking about it now, doesn't mean that players are happy and "dealing with it". Bet if you did an official poll, there would be tons of people voting against the new change.
Disappointed TCC or anyone from the Dev Team has yet to comment on how this has greatly negatively affected those with visual difficulties. In the past they use to jump on such things, guess PW changed that.
There were a few icons that needed updating but with so much change it'll take a while before I am icon-aware. I think my brain relies a lot on silhouette, but the new icons are all zoomed in on random componentry. Meanwhile I continue to sell anything green or white and tool-tip anything blue or purple.
Does this matter to me? No. Rapid recognition of boff power icons is far more important.
So why am I posting? Why am I asking myself questions? Why are you still reading? Tune in next ti-

Oh I saw a lot of people talking about it, but not everyone was complaining....
Indeed. Everyone says "The Defiant and Sovereign are very powerful ships; They're designed for combat" (which is already wrong on the case of the Sovereign; On film, we saw it ordered to take diplomatic missions, not combat missions). That completely ignores basic thermodynamics. More energy/power [on a ship that uses energy weapons] = More powerful ship.
The Enterprise-e which was a sovereign class ship was the most advanced ship in the fleet note the sovereign was newer design then the defiant, and yes the ship was geared towards combat unlike the galaxy class which was more of a jack of all trades. the Sovereign was armed to the teeth. also unlike the galaxy which was a family friendly ship the Sovereign did not have quarters for family of the crew.
the ship outgunned the defiant weapon wise and defense wise in every way just look up all the armaments.

The Sovereign was advanced in its early deployment days, but now it's quite lackluster compared to more current ships.
Recently Cryptic changed the icons for consoles, which in turn has brought confusion and a disdain in the aesthetic department.
A) MAIN Issue - confusing and hard to identify items
Icons look horrid, design wise
I just wish they spent more time on bug squishing then fixing things that were not broken to begin with.
Its a SNAFU - Situation NORMAL, All Fouled Up
There is just something about the old icons that were easy to identify with, but with these new icons, its a mess.
sry just my two cents regarding the matter, I just wish they spent more time killing the old bugs that are still lingering around, instead of trying to fix things that are not broken.
As this will just get moved to the 500+ post thread already in existence I'll just say read my answer there.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

The visually disabled players complained about the new UI, Cryptic said NOTHING.
The visually disabled players complained about the now overuse of non bloom texture based "spam" graphics for special abilities which knock out and reset certain types of screen magnifiers, Cryptic said NOTHING.
The visually disabled players have put in complaints about the new icons which for monochromatic and dual colourblind players, partially sighted players and players with an overarch visual problem look literally all the same, Cryptic said NOTHING.
Maybe Cryptic should just put a sign on the game saying "Not intended for use by visually disabled persons".
"You know when that shark bites, with its teeth dear... scarlet billows start to spread..."
to be honest they look horrid, and confusing at the same time.
Agreed, but based on Cryptic's (lack of) response, our oppinions clearly don't matter. That's OK, I'm enjoying all the extra free time now that I'm currently no longer playing STO I never planned on quitting, but my eyes can't stomach the new icon format for more than a few minutes before I have to shut the game down.

I'm kinda happy that they updated the icons before I purchased the latest round of lock box ships... saved me a few hundred bucks easy!
It makes me HATE looking at my shipset up and makes me want to play even less. Why?
i.e.
When I look at a blue @ and a purple * I know what @ and * means.
When I look at vaguely greenish & and a kinda blue, maybe purple % I have no idea what it is. I have to check the pop up tip when changing builds..
I have to check it on everything I have when deleting junk..
I have to check it when putting stuff into/out of a bank..
I have to check it on every drop when with a team..
I have to stare at the stinking screen trying to decipher this new picture that was apparently put there just to TRIBBLE us off.
I have to play another game where stuff doesnt change just for the hell of it.
So yeah
Put my @ and * back please.
( leave me to my whine, i'm happy enough just posting it without the, people who think they are mods', response )
If you like the new look, good for you, I flippin hate it.

Your Javelin deals 125417 (89066) Disruptor Damage(Critical) to Tholian Recluse. > lol

This I'm afraid, the changes have not been thought through properly. It would be nice were a further design change for ease of identity was made or indeed to revert to the old icons.
If you've come to the forums to complain about the AFK system, it's known to be bugged at the moment.

The red/pink/green color scheme of the revamped tactical consoles remind me of what I threw up after drinking too much Perhaps this explains why I always start feeling sick after viewing the new icons for a few minutes.
I can't tell one console from another now, which means I hit 'Need' at every drop. Also, I can no longer swap in the correct resistances in the missions where you don't know who the enemy is until they arrive. I'll still mouseing over the armour consoles having to read what they are when the first rounds impact my ship.
Change for the sake of change is not an improvement.

I don't use Twitter, but anyone is welcome to relay my CCG-format suggestion to Cryptic's powers-that-be directly.
