New Tech and maps are coming!!!!
Ask Cryptic 08.2012
Dstahl: [Over] the last year, [=2011, Havam] the studio has [...] dedicated internal development resources to analyzing and building a fun PvP prototype. This has helped us learn and understand the tech necessary to make PvP a healthy part of our games.

That effort was largely successful internally and helped identify how we should proceed with PvP in the future. Earlier this year, STO jumped at the opportunity to be the first Live Cryptic game to use this new tech and started work on revamping a space PvP map that could serve as a test bed for players to provide feedback. That test map was nearly finished when ?Gozer? left the team. It has since passed to another designer on the team and he is coming up to speed on everything that had been developed over the past several months.

[...] The first step is going to be putting a test map out for players sometime in the next few months [08.2012] and then seeing where we go from there. Only after we believe the existing PvP community confirms our opinion that this is an improvement to PvP, will we consider putting serious development effort towards a releasable map set.

Thus, the writing on the wall is that PvP will continue as is for the duration of Season 6 and will slowly begin to improve in Seasons 7 through 9, [counting LoR we are at S9] with the end goal of having an awesome and fun PvP ?battleground? like map by the time Season 9 ships.
so far so good, new tech in testing, new czar is on it. By the time Season 9 ships (aka Season 8) all will be done.

Good news new rep!

[10:23] [REDALERT] <Dev> Oaks@dstahl: PVP Updates is after May update
[TTS] <Dev> Oaks@dstahl: PvP is probably going to be the next Reputatoin we do
[TTS] <Dev> Oaks@dstahl: pvp reputation is definitely in the cards for 2013 - probably the next one we'll do

Great PvP rep, more grind, but fun grind. Also as for universal consoles and factional specifics lets not forget Gozer
I see lots of threads about KDF players having access to gear that FED players do not. This isn’t going to be a problem in the new system since their will not be any FED vs KDF PVP. All PVP in the new system will be cross faction queues.
Well he's no longer there, but look this guy is
<Dev> dMorn@dstahl: re: PVP - we have a dedicated specialist revamping PVP to allow cross faction matches and any level bolstering. We are starting with a space arena revamp and going from there - post S6

while we're at it look what the cat brought back
<Dev> dMorn@dstahl: re: PVP leaderboards - these are planned for the PVP update
Great new rep, and leaderboards, SNix would be proud. wait what????
Dstahl: It has been in our design all along that Starbases will eventually see PvP, and not just Deathmatch PvP. Season 6 is launching with Starbase PvE Challenges. Starbase PvP Challenges is a feature for a future Season. [07/2012, havam]
[...]
Dstahl: [...]we have an amazing array of new content designers, such as Mr. Dods (Alpha, Starbase Incursion, Starbase Alert) who will be continuing the work on PvP as we move closer to the redesign of the system. We expect the updates to PvP to happen on our Test Server first and will not be going Holodeck until the PvP community has had ample time to provide feedback. We know that this will take some time, [...] We will continue to make great content, such as what you are seeing in Season 6.
yeah so devs, what happend?? Time for a smoke check out stowiki for more fun PvP vaporware>>here<<
[TTS] <Dev> Oaks@dstahl: PvP needs gear, better maps, and two full factions - it isn't fixable overnight
you guys are really pushing it, awesome job, and thanks for all the improvements that have materialized already.

>>>>>>>>Fast forward August 2013<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

    Cryptic Math...

Can't count LoR as a Season.

    It was an Expansion.

So PvPers have to wait until Season 9, in 2014.

    Yeah. That's it.

You can find/contact me in game as @PatricianVetinari. Playing STO since Feb 2010.

Yeah, I no longer look at updates for PVP as being something that they are willing to release while they have to release more PVE content first.

Its like the Federation Vs the Klingons.. :P

Yeah i heared he even killed people in a sci ship. Not a healing wells, but an actuall cc bild using sci/sci..... must have been something.

I m convinced that his disappearance had something to do with non-release of the vault shuttle pvp map. He seemed to like the idea. ;)

by public demand updated the OP.

Geko on Podcast: "No pvp updates"

looks like that dev working hard on all the pvp additions was really put to good use.

Over the last year, the studio has been coming to terms with this and has dedicated internal development resources to analyzing and building a fun PvP prototype. This has helped us learn and understand the tech necessary to make PvP a healthy part of our games.

That effort was largely successful internally and helped identify how we should proceed with PvP in the future

It just occurred to me that they simply might have identified that "proceeding with PvP" is just halt all development, throw broken junk at it, and wait for the current player-base to disappear. GJ cryptic, it worked.

PVP is such a low priority at cryptic studios that even a redesign of the console icons had priority...

imho, we will see a complete fix for all known bugs, before any addition is done to PVP...and i mean that in a sarcastic way.

no wait even better: the galaxy class will be one of the top cruiser ingame and for free...before pvp gets developement resources.

You must have a pretty high opinion of the state of PvP...to compare the effort of what needs to be fixed in PvP to changing console icons.

Hrmm, and I wonder how much time the Systems guys put in on that artwork, eh? I guess the Art guys were just standing around the watercooler talking about the season finale of The Killing.

I really don't understand these "an artist can't write pvp code" comments that pop up everytime someone criticises Cryptic's priorities. Yes, an artist cannot write pvp code. But he gets paid with the same type of money as someone who can write code. Paying an artist for redesigning existing things means that there is less money for hiring a programmer who can actually fix stuff.

I just wish we could get a straight answer.

Are they working on new maps?
Are they working on new game types at all?
Is PvP taken into consideration when developing new consoles (see: Subspace Integration)?
Is there a Dev that is dedicated to PvP or is PvP development just worked on when someone has the time?

What is a realistic timeframe for us to expect to see new maps/game modes?

I think the answers from Geko were pretty clear:

New Maps: Dyson Sphere space adventure zone: NO PvP.
New Game Types: Starbase pvp is coming with the new rep system either before the tholians or after. Since the voth will be next and no pvp is in there, the new design of the rep system will bypass pvp. So no.
Consoles: Lol obviously no, it doesn't work as designed and is bugged on top.
Mr. Dods....who knows, from the looks of it, he probably has other tasks right now. Unless you count branflakes cheering how great pvp is and how important the pvpers are to cryptic, I'd say no. The guy was supposed to be oworking on that prototype since 2011. If anything other then "TRIBBLE it" had come out of it, you can bet we would have heared about it.

Time frame: THere won't be any additions to pvp, we get mac support soon(tm) though.

I find it completely insane and saddening (a little impressive too) that the community have had to organize among themselves to do something about it, to be able to enjoy pvp again.

I'd say that it's very impressive - the amount of effort that some members of the community out there have put into trying to organize things, trying to make PvP more inviting, trying to make it better for as many folks as possible...they're doing that on their own time and their own dime. Yet even those folks - they still get swamped with all the moaning and groaning from other members of the community...meh.

oh dont get me wrong. the community has done great things for this game.

but it shouldnt be ONLY the community doing things for this games pvp.

and i think hilbert has a point, with all that is wrong in this game (not just pvp), was an artist redesign of consoles really needed?

    I think you misunderstood me.

As I understand your point, you say "an artist cannot work on systems-related stuff and therefore it's pointless to complain that this artist did not work on systems stuff".

I agree that an artist cannot work on systems stuff. But I say: It's not god-given that Cryptic have an artist on their payroll instead of a systems guy; it's a conscious decision on their part.

Whether it's better business-wise for Cryptic to fix PVP or redo the icons is a different question. And probably the answer is that new icons will make them more money (at least in the short term) than some systems rebalancing that angers parts of the pve crowd. But saying that an artist cannot write code and therefore Cryptic had no choice in this is a strawman argument.

    I think you misunderstood me.

I took what baudl said as akin to complaining that PvP development hasn't taken place because somebody in HR helped out somebody fill out some paperwork. Damn them for doing anything else! It's just frustration.

Cause face it, while havam's got a nifty list of PvP letdowns...PvP's not the only place that Stahl has said something would happen and it did not nor only place that Geko has said something would not happen and it did.

Even with that, they're still not the top guys...you hit up Jack, you hit up Alan, you hit up Robert - there's probably a bunch of folks between Jack and Robert that I left out there.

It's a frustration that comes about from something akin to this...

Kid: But you said we were going to get ice cream after baseball practice.
    Parent: Maybe next time.
Kid: But you said we were going to get ice cream after band practice.
    Parent: Maybe next time.
Kid: But you said we were going to get ice cream after I got married, bought a house, had kids of my own.
    Parent: FFS...

Asking them "Are we there yet?" a million times won't change that we're there yet or not...we'll be there or we'll ditch the ride at some point to find another way there...

While Bort and Hawk have both recently b-slapped the snot out of some PvE-folks (it's not a first, it happens from time to time) - the game is going to be what it is...

...and that's still a far cry from what was announced back when Paramount announced Perpetual was doing a Star Trek MMO nearly nine years ago.

Sometimes, I wish that Cryptic would just pull the plug on PvP from STO - focus on making a Star Trek MMO. At the same time, I'd like them to put together a persistent world TPS/FPS set in the Star Trek IP. Make the "PvP" game a low cost sub based game, so that it's supported by customers in that fashion without it needing to go anywhere near P2W...and run STO as the Barbie & Ken: Star Trek Fashionstravaganza whatever...meh.

I don't know...it's just frustration. It's the same complaints - if it's anything like with my ex-wife, then Cryptic's probably deaf to them now. She would nag about things, I'd just smile blankly, and yeah...

    Lol.

Thing is we're not children asking for ice cream. But paying customers. If they decide to drop planned feature x for pvp, and do y for PvE based on it. Just saying so, would be the honest thing. This way i don't need to start these kinds of PvP update threads.

Other then that: "just for fun" was in regards to my expectations. Silent nods is all i expect from cryptic, and then back to business as usual.

However, assuming you don't switch wives as often as new players decide to give STO a try, i think its also important that they see maicake/ice-cream is a lie.....so think carefully how much time you want to spend with this guy.

Have to chuckle (one of those you've hit me in the face so many times I just offer a toothless grin kind of chuckles), but do you remember Geko talking about the competitive PvE thing and folks doing the /ExcedrinStrengthFacepalm over what he had said?

PvP folks doing PvP. Competitive PvE folks doing PvE...adding a turret to the PvP map.

Well, if you listened to the P1 Vegas Supplemental...even the Competitive PvE is gone. The territory control is strict PvE...players fighting the Voth in the Sphere. And yeah, if folks complete certain PvE things...they'll get their "turret" to help fight off the Voth.

I think that's part of the frustration that comes with the complaints...they pull me out of my denial and delusion - they slap me about the face with the reality, leaving me wondering just WTF I'm still doing here. I saw the first movie in the theater - heck, I saw all but the JJTrek stuff in the theater. I've watched TOS, TAS, and TNG until I'm blue in the face. I'd have to be blue in the face to watch VOY, DS9, or ENT...but I've caught episodes here and there.

If this wasn't tied to the Star Trek IP - then I wouldn't be here. They've got me by my now gray short and curlies...but not really, cause STO is neither the Star Trek PvP nor Star Trek PvE game I'd really want to play if I stop to think about it...all the "larger" complaints draw attention to that. "Smaller" complaints - this is bugged, this is OP/UP, etc, etc, etc...can get as lost in those discussions and hide from the reality as actually playing the game...meh, now I'm just rambling.

Given the timeframe that Geko mentioned in that P1-S Vegas thing...I don't see S9 hitting in May next year. Next year...hrmmm...next year, yeah...next year - next year will make the past couple of years look epic, eh? /cough
