maybe a better question for this thread is how many toons is too much. i have 8 of them spanning 3 tacs, 3 science and 2 engineers. before being pummeled with new content and endless reputation projects i could manage effectively 4 of them. then came the romulans and 2 more characters leading up to my current 8. i am not an all day gamer and especially during the summer i am crammed with work so even more i need to neglect my toons. with all thats going on, the grinding, the upgrades and everything keeping up with the rest of my fleet mates i find that i can manage maybe 2 to 3 leaving the rest for farming if i even get to them. it gets to be overwhelming thinking i can keep all 8 going. how many toons do you guys have and how many do you think is too much?
I have 6, 3 feds (1 of each career), 2 klingons (tac and engi), and 1 Romulan Engi. Though i really only use my 3 engi's and fed science character. Honestly IMO 3 is probably the best because you can use all faction ships on one character so one of each faction would be the most "optimized"
EDIT: Forgot to mention my fed sci and tac are level 50, as well as my rom. MY main is probably going to be my rom or klink engi.
3 Feds, one of each profession, including the sci captain I created all the way back when the game launched.
3 KDF, one of each profession.
5 Rom. Two engineers, two science, one tac. Two KDF aligned and three Fed aligned.
All of these are at max level except for one Reman science officer. However none of these are extremely well geared cause I only grind when I feel like it and in any case I'm not a min-maxer or pvper or a anything where I would care about being geared.
2 Level 50 Feds: one alien Tac female and one Andorian Engie female. Deleted my Fed science last summer and unsuccessfully attempted to get Cryptic to restore it for me. Also, I went on a few adventures as a female Ferengi TAC, but ended up deleting her as she was too fugly; basically, I couldn't bear to see here anymore. I swear, those ears....and that nose....
3 Level 50 Klings: one alien science that served as my main until LOR was released. Also, 1 alien tac and 1 liberated borg female kling engie.
1 Level 50 Kling Reman and 2 low-level Romulans: My main was my tac female Reman until I decided to switch over to Romulan tac (level 14). Now, I'm thinking Romulan engie would be even better for my D'Deridex since engineers are better at maintaining higher cruiser power levels when you couple them with 4 technicians. I'm probably going to be going fed with my Rommie engie since Feds have awesome costume options like the 7 of 9 get-up and the white diplomatic coat.
It takes me a good hour just to cycle through the DOFF assignments on each alt, more if I have colonists to sell. I'm doing the Risian grind on my main and 3 alts and it takes an hour or so just to do that.
I can't see me getting any more slots for farming alts. I don't often keep up with the ones I have.
I wouldn't say my career choices are predictable or anything.
Two of them have Full Omega and Rom Rep.
I've ignored the Rep grind mostly otherwise, only taking part in it because a mission seems fun at the time. So, the rest of the toons will take forever going through Rep systems.
Havent even really cared at all about Tholian Rep.
I have 6 empty Slots, as I don't make a new toon till I have a story for them.
I only do rep when I feel like it, which is an excellent way to maintain (some) sanity.
"Participation in PVP-related activities is so low on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis that we could in fact just completely take it out of STO and it would not impact the overall number of people [who] log in to the game and play in any significant way." -Gozer, Cryptic PvP Dev
Turned my second Fed into a bank alt and haven't touched my KDF since LoR launched. The rep system is a bit too much for me to keep it going on more than 2 characters right now.
Factional Alts
* Human Female Federation Tactical (want to change to female to mimic my First officer)
* Alien Female KDF Science (Alien Tac's Minion)
* Alien Male KDF Engineer (EEEEEEVIL pirate mirror me)
Former Alts / Now just Boff Farming
* Human Male Federation Science (me)
* Human Male Federation Engineer (me)
I can manage to play for maybe an hour a day and manage two characters ok. Each day for mostly one character. Running the Summer event on the top two. That's about all the time I have.
Hope to start a Romulan someday but not in a hurry.
For my limited time, 2 or 3 characters is about enough. I have learned how to be a good Engineer for the most part, want to learn being a Tactical and Sci. That's enough for me.
FED, Eng, Vulcan, VA(50) this is my main. He's got the most rep gear and leveling up on the Nukara rep now. Got all the event ships, trying (but not very hard) for the Risan Corvette.
FED, Tac, Human (actually Alien, meant to be a descendant of James Kirk), VA(50) just recently got to 50 and coming up to speed on all the rep systems. This is the guy that I want to have the Risan Corvette on!
FED, Sci, Romulan (Alien), Female, at level 18?, not played very much.
FED, Tac, Caitian, level 5? Not sure if I got the time for another one.
KDF, Level 23? Got the winter event ship. Not much else.
No Romulan character yet.

I like exploring different ship mechanics and features, so I have toons that let me do that. I started with Fed engineer and KDF tac, then realized tac made engineer irrelevant. Now I have one Tac and one Sci in each of three factions (plus the original Fed engineer). That gets me into all the t-5 ships. I would be happy playing for an hour or two at night, just dont have much else going on right now so I keep the game running on a second PC and jump in and out through the day
My three mains are a Fed Tac Human, a KDF Eng Gorn, and a FedRom Sci Romulan.
My alts are a KDF Tac Liberated Borg, a Fed Eng Klingon, and a Fed Sci Vulcan.
(The above are listed in order of how much I play them.)
I have plans for a KDFRom Reman (not sure which career) a KDF Sci (not sure which species) and replacing my Fed Sci with a Human. (Vulcans bore me.)
I've got T5 Rom and Omega rep on my Fed and KDF mains but haven't bought much gear. Working on Nukara. My Rom main is almost finished with Rom T3 and Nukara T2 and I'm debating whether to even bother with Omega rep for her. My KDF Tac alt is working on around T3 for Omega but I'll probably skip the others on him. I'm not sure about my other feds at this stage.

3 Fed (One being my Main)
1 KDF
1 Romulan (Fed allied)
The term ******* use to describe that they have an alt or a character on a mmorpg. You know how STUPID TOON sounds? Jesus...
Hey yo! I rolled another toon!
Toon, usually referred as a character in an online role playing game. Also known as an alt, or character.
1. A character that one creates in a video game. The origins of this term are unclear, but may be related to the second definition.
2. In the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), an animated film performer who inhabits the human world but is not human (examples: Roger Rabbit, Jessica Rabbit). A shortened form of "cartoon."
I have three characters, all KDF. 2 lvl 50's (tactical and engineering), and a lvl 30 science officer. I barely use my engineering and science officers for anything, and am using my tactical officer 95% of the time, both PvP and PvEing.
I should at least finish off my science officer or something. . .I just don't multi-task between characters well, it tends to burn me out on the game.
KLINGON
tac chel grett or mirror qin
sci varanus
eng negvar or mirror vorcha
ROMULAN
tac scimitar
sci scimitar
my engineers just sit unless a team pvp or stf dictates we need one but almost never.
i have not touched my klingon sci for a very long time
all my toons are lvl 50 and stocked with fleet gear or top space sets besides the romulan ones. actually i just cant find it in myself to grind out any more reputations i have had enough of them and really dont want to do them again for my alts or main ahem characters (toons).
i just cant delete them cause i have spent so much time on them but yes for me maybe i can run 3 chars but thats it.
I have an empty character slot and I might make another Romulan.
Thanks for the expansion that had "as much content as the last"
9 Episodes = 30+ episodes...?

It's pronounced "S.T.O." "Stow" sounds idiotic! lol
16 Total. 11 Feds, 3 Klingons, 2 Romulans (7 Tacs, 5 Science officers and 4 Engineers) all but one of the Romulans at level 50, most of which levelled almost exclusively through Doff assignments.
When I started it was just the four guys below. Now I'm a Flark rancher.

EDIT: Forgot to mention my fed sci and tac are level 50, as well as my rom. MY main is probably going to be my rom or klink engi.
My starter Fed toon, and 2 KDF toons (1 strictly for PvP), and 1 unfilled spot in my roster.
I haven't had a working game long enough since LoR launch to roll a Rom toon.

Artakha, fed eng.
Fluffy, Ferasan.
7 other alts I just used for dilithium farming.
