Three. Two Federation and one Romulan Republic (Federation allied). All tactical department.
On one of them, I turned my (my original "main" character's) first bridge officer (female Andorian), and former Number One, into a player character. Others will follow at some point. Keeps my roster in fresh blood and keeps things from getting boring in the long term.
4 Feds. Vulcan Sci (first ever char), Joined Trill Sci (Main) Betazed Tac, Alien Engie.
3 KDF. Klingon Tac, Orion Sci, Joined Trill Engie (~27ish or so)
2 RR, Tac at 40 and Sci at 7 or so as of this writing. Both of them plan to be Fed-aligned. Slot reserved for RR engineer that plans to be KDF aligned.
Only grind rep on one toon, the main Fed Sci. The remaining alts barely see playtime as it is, I fly them when I get a little bored of the Science toon.

I have 5 avartars all told. And when their powers combined they form a really awful looking blue guy.
3 Fed, one of each, a tac Orion and a borg Fromulan engineer.
Cheers from Antonio Valerio Cortez III, Half-Celestial Archduke of the Free Marches Confederacy.
maybe a better question for this thread is how many toons is too much. i have 8 of them spanning 3 tacs, 3 science and 2 engineers. before being pummeled with new content and endless reputation projects i could manage effectively 4 of them. then came the romulans and 2 more characters leading up to my current 8. i am not an all day gamer and especially during the summer i am crammed with work so even more i need to neglect my toons. with all thats going on, the grinding, the upgrades and everything keeping up with the rest of my fleet mates i find that i can manage maybe 2 to 3 leaving the rest for farming if i even get to them. it gets to be overwhelming thinking i can keep all 8 going. how many toons do you guys have and how many do you think is too much?
I have 6 Fed toons, two of each career, but only use 1 of each consistently. The other 3 I do doff stuff with to collect stuff that way. I have one Klingon and 1 Romulan, both which I also use consistently.

I have way too many toons for my STO playtime's health.
Fed Vulcan TAC - My original STO toon.
KDF Klingon SCI - As soon as I learned the Klingon Empire was playable when STO came out, I created this character. At STO release, you needed to have a Lv5 Fed before you could roll a KDF toon.
KDF Joined Trill ENG
KDF Orion ENG - When the Orions were made into a playable race, this HAD to be made. Female Orion, of course.
Fed: 5 Eng, 5 Tac, 5 Sci (pretty much one of each playable species) All but 2 are VA
KDF: 1 Eng, 1 Tac, 1 Sci (Lib Borg Klingon, Klingon, Orion) All LG
Rom+Fed: 1 Eng, 1 Tac, 1 Sci (Lib Borg, Reman, Alien) Only 1 is VA
Rom+KDF: 1 Eng, 1 Tac, 1 Sci (Rom, Reman, Alien) None are Lvl 50 yet.
2 x Fed Tactical (liberated Borg and Ferengi)
2 X Fed Science (Joined Trill and Alien)
2 X Fed Engineer (Human and Alien)
2 X KDF Tactical (Klingons)
2 x KDF Science (Joined Trill and Orion)
1 x KDF Engineer (Alien)
1 x Romulan Science (Romulan allied with KDF)
I completed Omega rep on 3 characters (2 fed and the Romulan), Romulan rep on the same 3 and Nukara Rep on 1 (Romulan). I don't plan on doing rep for any other characters until such time as they make it a bit easier for Alts.
I tend to play just one or two characters at a time and alternate between them. They are generally equipped for specific roles (a shield stripping character, burst DPS, torpedo boat, ground heals.. that sort of thing). I have been playing since release with a few breaks every now and again.
I have ten characters, I really don't know how that happened, but oh well.
7 Fed Human Tac Main (I got all five tiers of rep on this one), Saurian Eng, Vulcan SCI These for to test out which class i like, Ferengi Eng because I got a Dkora so it only seemed right. Bajoran TAC (I really dont know why I made that one, but it will be my testing out prototype builds and a Human TAC that was named in honor of my deceased brother
2 KDF Klingon Male TAC, Gorn Male that one was made because I like the idea of a Gorn Rebellion, so he is a Gorn rebel
1 RR Romulan TAC because I love the Romulans
I do have plans to make an Orion Character as my KDF-allied merchant similar to the Ferengi, its my way of having an trader class.
Just 9, see my sig. Each faction with one Eng, Tac and Sci (2 Romulans, 1 Reman, 1 Vulcan, 1 Bolian, 1 Trill, 1 Klingon, 1 Gorn and 1 Orion).
2 Romulan characters (Tae'Va and To'Var) are allied with the KDF, T'Vaya (eng) is FED allied.
I was toying with the idea of making 6 Romulans (all careers respectively with both FED and KDF allegiance), but didn't go through with it. Wouldn't be fair for my KDF and FED toons.
As for my sanity, it was fine with the original 6 KDF and FED characters. Now with LoR, all the new events and reputations, I play much less. I'd really appreciate if the next couple seasons just relied on bug fixing and fine tuning of what we got and not adding new stuff, so I can catch up.
TOIVA, Toi Vaxx, Toia Vix, Toveg, T'vritha, To Vrax: Bring in the Allegiance class. Toi'Va, Ti'vath, Toivia, Ty'Vris, Tia Vex, Toi'Virth: Add Tier 6 KDF Carrier and Raider. Tae'Va, T'Vaya, To'Var, Tevra, T'Vira, To'Vrak: Give us Asylums for Romulans.
I have 6 feds which includes a reman. Then I have 18 KDF including a reman and two romulans.
I rarely play the feds though because of the way fed game play is it just doesn't feel like its part of Starfleet lol. Other than that I just find that fed side is mostly just for looks only being that over half the ships are rarely ever seen played especially because over the years science has been so heavily nerfed you rarely see any being used.
I've got another slot there - but with all the grind, having to run 9 toons as is through each event...yeah, I've got another slot that's just sitting there. I just can't bring myself to roll another toon. All of those guys were S7 rerolls (stupid of me, but I underestimated how bad the grinds would be and still would have had to do them for the passives) or added later.
Prior to S7, where you could hit 50 in a weekend and be geared within a week - it was one thing. Folks asking for more content, well - it taking over a month to gear doing the same thing that used to take a week, if that...is not more content. Meh, oh well...
Since the Crystalline Event, it's mainly been a case of just playing for events. It may only take about 5 minutes to do Flying High per toon, but that's after starting it - still have to go through all the toon switching, etc, etc, etc - so yeah, it's over an hour a day just do that. So that's pretty much all I do with the random STF thrown in here and there to work on somebody's Rep.
Yep, looking at the changes with S7 and what's happened since - it's hard not to see what's going on. Folks could easily reroll prior to S7 instead of buying a respec. Folks could add more toons cheaper than they could respec.
It's all a joint Tal Shiar/Cryptic plot - a nefarious plan - to sell overpriced respecs!
All max level, but...3 have never even started the reputation grind (and won't). And I will probably only max the rep tracks on 2 of them.
And I can't see starting another one, unless they bring in the Q faction.

So thats 6 Feds 4 klinks and 2 roms so 12 wow I had no idea lol
I used to rotate through about six of them doing doffs and one mission each then cycling to the next. but now i jsut mainly work on my main doing rep But I think i'll end up haveing 3 mains one form each faction all with difent class
1 Romulan Fed part way through the Romulan story who replaces a Lethean who finished his. She might then reincarnate to test low level Klingon content if/when I hear it is awesome.
1 Alien Fed "half-Telsian" who was so impressed by the shield mod improvements made to the Olympic that he has played long past 50. He has lots of fun testing any gear that makes sense on that ship, and carries a Type 2 Phaser. And a proper weapon.
I'd build him all over again if STO made playable Delta Quadrant Telsians with useful "gullibility" and "persuasive means of determining the truth" traits. I believe these are linked... I also understand that means I'll be playing my current soul for a long time. He has Omega and Romulan rep and will consider future reps if the marks are fun to get.
I don't have toons, this isn't the Disney channel, I have a character. And two+ is too many.
I agree with your first statement, as for the second, no. You have to have at least one character per faction!
Thanks for the expansion that had "as much content as the last"
9 Episodes = 30+ episodes...?

So 5 in total for me, though my fed and KDF chars are not really used these days.
I also have a fair few alts from the grinding days that are not used at all, so they were not counted.
