People like to talk about tolerance, coexistence and acceptance, but when it comes to issues that are controversial, they just stick to what ever side they are on. I'm wondering how many people use the same language that Towelliee use, but because they do not stream their gameplay they are not getting the same reaction.

I just want to say Mr. Towelliee, I have never seen your stream or knew about you before this event. But I just want to say welcome to the game and our community. Hope that you enjoy the game.

I'm also guilty of using the same language when I'm gaming or doing some yard work. I understand where are you coming from.

Just keep in mind that when you are streaming, people are watching, and you are no longer representing you as a person, but you as a brand. When you decided to make your private life public, you have to take in account that not everybody knows you or were you come from. And that is why some people are upset about things you have said.

The only advise that I would give you is if you want to be a good internet gaming personality, you have to be conscious of what you say or do, because not everybody understand.

But again, welcome to STO and the community.

Well I can see a few people around these parts are a bit heated. I live life with eyes open and I think outside the box. I don't contain myself looking for ways to pick people apart on the internet. I know when something is bad, and when something is good. Wrong or right. I know how to take a joke and when the things I say are used in a fun context.

Anyhow, nice chat. I know a lot of people enjoyed the stream and STO was put on the map of twitch for a few hours. Whether it was the STO community supporting or not is not my concern. I was happy just to get new players involved and bring in new blood to the game. I open the eyes of MMO players to something OTHER than the normal. (WoW etc.)

Have a good time and I be around learning and failing :)

I had never heard of you before your event. So I have no opinion on what you may or may not have done. I however question your decision to disqualify a number of people from the contest simply because we were not following your channel, Further disappointing as i wasn't even aware that was a requirement, nor should it of been. Ive never heard of that website and probably will never be back to it, using the contest just to raise your number of followers seem low. Disqualifying people due a technicality you poorly informed them of is even worse.

Some people seem to be trying to change their tune here, lets remember the actual words that were said.

You can see towelliee bullying a TRIBBLE person, sending insulting TRIBBLE jokes at them, via images on twitter. He describes the bullying of a TRIBBLE person as having "some fun".

You can see in his original post, he says using slurs like "that f--" and "what a fairy" is not only okay, he suggest they're normal. That is using these words as negatives to mean both TRIBBLE and bad. That incites prejudice because you are saying someone is TRIBBLE, but your meaning is that they are bad (because it's an insult), it disparages homosexuals by definition.

Feel free to call me an activist if you want, but I will not sit by while you claim these slurs are okay or "fun".

Does anyone thing you would be making the same statements with racial slurs? No, because those are wrong too.

The difference is you accept the fact that it's okay to use TRIBBLE slurs as words meaning bad or wrong, as insults. You are accepting and promoting the disparaging of TRIBBLE people.

I've been told from members of that community that the reason that they form LGBT fleets isn't so much about waving who they are in public, but rather to be around people who understand them. When they join up with one of those fleets, they know that all of the members there are apart of their community and that there won't be any misunderstandings based off of that.

I also have to disagree that being LGBT is a lifestyle choice any more than being straight is. I don't think they woke up one morning and decided "I think I'm going to be TRIBBLE from now on." That's who and what they are.

    This.

The last fleet I was in (and the last one I have ever been in since) found out I was TRIBBLE and they were awkward and weird. The brosters were always laughing about picking up girls, the husbands and wives were always talking about their marital issues, during "mature hour" from midnight to two, in which the conversations got downright raunchy (and yet I never participated), every manner of vulgar expression for women, genitalia, and sexual act was thrown about.

And one day, while playing, I mentioned I could not make it to an event because we were going to have dinner with my boyfriends parents who had driven into town, and I got a "warning" from the wife of the fleet leader for being "inappropriate" with children in the teamspeak, and for "flagrantly" throwing my sexuality around the room. Incidentally, this was my "outing".

The fleet leader later apologized but I had already quit. Some people truly "do not care" about sexuality, but for others, many do not care "so long as they don't know" and you "pretend to be straight".

Damn, I'm sorry you had to go through that. I tell you what though. If someday you ever feel like joining a fleet again, shoot me a PM or a tell in game (@Lantesh) and I'll toss you an invite. My fleet is small and we aren't that far along Starbase wise, but we seriously don't care about you being TRIBBLE. If we don't fit what you're looking for, the big LGBT fleet that I know of is Stonewall. I've played with their members many, many, many times in STFs and Fleet Alerts. Good people there.

Isn't that forced by Twitch? I've seen giveaways that happen like that.

Would you stop? WE GET YOUR ANGRY. Just leave the thread and forget. This entire fiasco makes you look like a child complaining to his parents that someone's making fun of you. There's one simple thing to do. IGNORE IT. THIS man has done NADA to you. Zip. Zat. Boom.

His comments may be offensive, but you're making a big deal over words that 3/4 of the gaming world use to signify hate or that they dislike something. I admit I've used them but I don't go around hating on homosexuals just because I said the word TRIBBLE.

And get rid of your sig. That's just the fuel on the fire.

I dont know if its forced by twitch or not, if it is, it should of been clearly stated that it was. my issue is with being disqualified for something that was not clearly stated anywhere. thats the equivalent of winning the lotto and then finding out you cant have it because you bought your ticket at a stripes and not a 7-11

i understanding registering with twitch was required, I dont see them forcing us to follow a specific channel tho.

I emailed Twitch to find out if it was required by them or not

I'm tired of people who suddenly become serious on the "intranetz" and go "You should apologize for saying those words!" I hear people saying these words everyday. This just shows that you guys sound take your own advice.

Stuff like this just raises my blood pressure.

Oh so because others say those words all the time it's totally okay to go around saying it?

Do you realize how ridiculous that sounds?

And to further that you already admitted that those words that "you hear all the time" are offensive.
    His comments may be offensive

And now you're the one who's getting upset when he's offended by something that you already admitted was offensive? It's actually hilarious how backwards you are.

I'm going to double post this since maybe you'll get it the third time around.

    I see.

You're perverting my words and turning them against me. Never once did I say "Oh, it's ok to say TRIBBLE. That's just fine." I said that you hear everyday people saying these words. It's like you've never heard someone say "TRIBBLE" or "TRIBBLE".

"You mad"? Seriously? You're more diluted than I thought!

I've had enough. I'm going to get me some hard alcohol.

So then you don't think it's okay to say those words? Because you're going all over the place by bringing up the point that you hear people say those words all the time as an excuse and then backpedal by saying that I'm perverting your words when you're the one who brought up that point in the first place.

So let's hear it straight up.

Do you think that these words are okay to say?

    Yes or no?
I've had enough. I'm going to get me some hard alcohol.

Well if you don't come back to answer the question, let's hope you can take your own advice this time. Because I'll just keep posting it for you.

Depending on the context the words are used, they can be both good and harmful.

So, that means yes AND no.

Why are you so easy to provoke? Geez.

Alright, but see here's the thing. You already admitted that the comments he made were offensive. That would fall under the harmful category.
    His comments may be offensive

So since you already admitted this, why are so surprised that Tachyon is offended at comments that you already admit are offensive?

I'm not the one having my blood pressure rise to the point where I need some strong alcohol here. If anything, you're the easy one to provoke.

    Hey All,

Thanks for participating in the discussion!

Closing this thread out now that the give-away has ended, and since the focus of the conversation has shifted so far from the original topic. :)

As clarified previously there have been some good points made in this thread. We definitely had a good experience running this collaboration with Twitch/Towelliee, and are happy to see so many new faces within the community, all from different backgrounds and walks of life!

I'm happy that everyone was able to share their perspective and we definitely appreciate all the feedback we've received.
