A Borg. Even a Collective is Sexist

I just finished Hidden Agenda, Salvage Operations. This was my first time visiting a Borg vessel in STO. Funny how every female Borg on the ship was wearing only metal pasties and panties while the males were completely covered.

Seriously Cryptic? Seriously? You couldn't mix it up a bit? Some male Borg in metal boxers? Some female Borg fully armoured?

In the various TV series and movies both the male and female Borg were in full armour. Why the lowest common denominator play in-game?

    Guys making games...

    Pretty much answers that query.

There is a rather interesting deviation from this in one of the new Romulan Missions though.

If you look at the borg that way to begin with there is something wrong.

I don't instantly think 'oh how revealing' when I see whitened dull left over flesh from the carcass of a human being horrifically altered with machinery to fill a purpose in a hive-mind.

How long has this game been out? How long have the Borg been in STO? Now that you've seen something, years later, it's a problem? Do you want to complain about snakes kicking in EverQuest 1 too? That's about the same level of 'wtf'.

I don't know how familiar you are with the Star Trek franchise but a Borg's body is a shell, a husk. That's why it isn't completely covered. There are male Borg who are minimally "clothed" (that's not even a good way of describing what they wear) but because you haven't noticed them, they must not exist. Do you honestly think all Borg were portrayed physically like 7 of 9?

And if THIS is sexist, oh boy, I hope you never play any other MMOs but this one. From Night Elves' idle animation of bouncing up and down to ALL of Scarlet Blade, there is nothing in STO that is untoward within the genre's typical standard(s). Though if FreeRealms or Hello Kitty Online are your baseline, that may not be totally true.

Heck, most of the females aren't showing skin. I mean, yeah, they've got a bare midriff, but that's bare right down to their spine.

More importantly, though, the STO style Borg (as opposed to the TNG style Borg you still see in the tutorial and a handful of other places), the males are showing a lot of skin as well. Some of the higher rank ones are armored (and I don't think I've ever seen any female heavy or elite tactical drones), but not the lower ranked ones, male or female.

They only have a female liberated borg bridge officer and I have to say she is pretty nice although you can't change her uniform. Also, I like to dress my female bridge officers in a skirt or tight pants, I guess that makes me sexist too.

The Character Selection Screen on Tribble shows the Captain surrounded by his bridge crew some of which are kneeling, if this is a female in a skirt, well the view is great.:o

Herein lies the difference that makes it "sexist":

Both male and female characters in similar states of dress or undress. - not sexist

Only female (or male) characters in little to no covering while male (or female) characters all fully clothed - sexist

It's the difference between a female character wearing a full set of armour and a platini.

Oh, and I've only been playing for around a month and just casually at that. This was my first "in your face" experience with "games are for guys" sexism in STO from an NPC. Which is probably why it practically screamed at me because it doesn't fit with the rest of my experience with the game.

Also, if it isn't a "turn on" because it's decaying flesh then why not have a few male Borg in the same state? What's the harm? Why the huge backlash?

    What are you afraid of?

Ah, a noob to STO. You're going to soil yourself when you see how little the Orion women wear, and the scant clothing on Risa.

Seriously, it's just a video game. As a woman, I find nothing outlandishly offensive about the female NPCs. If you're going to claim sexism on the Undead of the Trek universe, you're confused as it is. Skin-tight, or barely covered, take your pick - - I.E, borg suit, or barely covered bits. Who cares, they both show off a necro body either way. Get. Over. It.

Actually, I have a female Orion and one of her outfits is the skimpy set. BUT that is how Orion women dress. It fits in the Star Trek universe.

Almost entirely naked Borg characters do not.

Herein lies the difference in our positions. Yours of "get over it" leaves in place sexism. Inequality. Mine of "lets at least balance things out" makes no negative impact on yours and allows for equal treatment.

Social inertia is a difficult thing to overcome but it can be done.

Anyone who is a Star Trek fan should know that. The franchise lives and breaths it.

So should a game it is based upon.

First off, let me put out that as a female I can understand what you are trying to say. However, to point some things out.

In the series only a handful of women are Borg. Seven and the queen being prominent. Seven they shove into a skin tight, form fitting, leave nothing to the imagination but the color of her skin suit. The queen, at one point is seen as nothing but a head and a spine.

It's this second part, the head and the spine of the queen, that the drone female borg are paying tribute to. I guess technically they could have chopped off even more of their chest, but they decided to armor it up. It was mentioned in the series that heart analogs were sometimes the last thing to be replaced, hence leaving the chest, which removing the rest of the body.

Higher level female Borg, ie no-drones, do indeed exist and they are fully armored, just like their male counterparts.

So, while I understand your concern, playing tribute to the Borg Queen from the movies, isn't something I concider sexist.

What would be wrong with that, exactly? Trek didn't shy away from it.

Remember the Open Top costumes? All the women aren't wearing undershirts, all the men are? I say remake the male ones, let's have some torn shirts like Kirk up in here.
