Systems Designer Jeremy "BorticusCryptic" Randall reveals details about the upcoming Crystalline Catastrophe event in this entry of the Season 7 News Dev Blog series.
I must admit, I thought I jumped forward in time quite a bit until I re-read the Season 7 bit.
Nice job art team on the updated graphics! That fiend looks beautiful. Like a moth to a flame we go. And a further thanks to the dev team for their community consultation on tuning it, as well as hosting a fun test event a while back!
I, like a lot of people, wasn't terribly fond of the crystal entity before, but these changes sound like they'll make it much more fun without making it TOO easy. Plus, it seems like I'll have a reason to use my jem heavy escort carrier over my fleet defiant, since the jemmy has better non-tactical abilties which sound like they'll be more important.
Depending on how well this works out, will this mean we might see more content in the future which makes non-tactical abilities worthwhile again? That might go some way to balancing escorts without just plain nerfing them.
Honestly, while I'm sure a lot of people will enjoy that massive dil reward, I already have 60000 I can't even refine, so more ore isn't really doing much for me.
all hands on deck time with the I.S.S. Zekrom leading the charge looking forward to fighting against the CE again since i have a few new toys to use against it >=).
I really like the idea of the event reputation and encourage people to play a given event but not feel restricted to a given hour so I really hope Cryptic expands on this.
The only question mark I have about the whole thing is the contribution threshold; 14/21 to some might be a bit too much. Perhaps 50% of the event would be better than 66% but that's just me I. Some may not necessarily have premade/private teams to rely upon.
Any reason why we need to shoot the thing when all we have to do is make a high pitch sound like that women did with the Enterprise in tng to blow them things up.

The CE will no longer uber heal itself. The worst case scenario is it accumulates a bunch of small shards and gets massive Damage Buffs, but there are a few Sci Skills that will strip that buff.
A PUG will win it, it might just take a little while.
Does this event feature mixed teams of both Feds and KDF? If not, there could be a shortage of players on the red side. We barely manage to start 5-player events, but 10 or more is pretty much out of our reach most of the time.
Interesting. Looks like a fair amount of effort into being more than just a DPS fest, which I certainly like, particularly how its got some specific use for lesser-used sci powers. Gonna be a pain for alting though. Definately glad to see new events that are both teamwork-emphasis AND have good rewards. Looking forward to it.
"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them." -Thomas Marrone
I just hope that STO isn't starting down the path CO went with limited time content. It didn't go over very well and sparked some rather nasty threads. Anyways everything looks good except for the limited time thing. Not a fan of taking away substantial content, not counting the fun little seasonal events and the like.
The queue is cross-faction. It will allow KDF and FED players to team together to take it down.
The dev blog could be edited to reflect this perhaps. Maybe some KDF ships warp in for a glorious battle with the CE and in the process save the Byzantium because it fought so valiantly.
I like the look of the Entity - looks like the remastered TNG version!
I hope there will someday be an option to try to communicate with it. The whole point of its final episode was that communicating with strange new life like the Entity was preferable to destroying it. I guess the Tholians got to it first, but that doesn't mean we can't try, right?
Why can't we just shatter the thing like the revenge-filled scientist did from a console on the Enterprise D?
What is explanation?
Well, that was in part something that it left itself open to. At first they were trying to communicate, then the scientist increased the amplitude of the carrier wave until it shattered it. IF the CE hadn't tried to communicate, that would have been impossible.

I had only ever participated in the old CE a couple of times, and found it ... wanting.
This revamp sounds interesting. I look forward to giving it a try.
I'm also intrigued by the new Event Rep Sys. I look foward to that as well.
You can find/contact me in game as @PatricianVetinari. Playing STO since Feb 2010.

My character Tsin'xing
you'd probably ask homeone to use a CE holoemitter and pvp it
