hangs then crashes on cryptic screen

Why dose this happen?

i patched the game then it hangs on the cryptic screen for a few moments after logging in.

All i get is this message


fatal error: unable to initialize on-demand patching and connect to patch server: The connection was idle for too long.

what the hell dose this mean? and how can i correct this?

    I get the same problem. There was a fix that was about renaming or moving the steam directory, but that didnt work for me. After many hours of patching I cant even plan! Ergh.
