Trouble with Ventrilo and STO

Hello!

I've got STO and Ventrilo on both my desktop and laptop (Windows 8 Pro, 64-bit). For some reason, I cannot use the "push to talk" (bound to my right alt key) on my desktop, but can just fine with my laptop. I've had it that way before upgrading from Windows 7 64bit to Windows 8 64bit.

On my desktop I typically run STO in a window rather than full screen. However, I can't even PTT when the STO launcher is my selected window.

Anyone else run into this?

edit: And before anyone says it, I'm not going back to Windows 7 :p

It may be a stupid question, but do you have to run things in administrator mode in Windows 8, if so that is a major reason that Ventrilo does that.

Not a stupid question. I'm pretty sure I've got both STO and Vent running in admin mode, but will double check. Hmm... of course, if I move them to My Documents -> Games, maybe I won't (UAC was done to discourage devs from assuming admin mode and rights, since that's apparently bad for multiuser setups or something).

Everything is working just peachy on my laptop, hence the confusion >_<

Okay, double checked; Vent wasn't on admin. I also hit compatibility mode to Windows 7 for both. Things work again, although UAC keeps coming up. Not something I normally deal with, so I'll have to figure that out later...
