thats only reason to sub in sto is for a stipend other then that you get every thing as a free player
Free players get Vet Rewards now too?
I've long said that there's no great advantage to being Gold in STO - I have hundreds of posts about it - but much like LotRO, I'm sure we'll eventually be seeing Content Packs in the Cartel Store for the Free players to buy much of what the Subscribers are getting.
And I've yet to see anything showing me how many Cartel Coins I can earn by just playing as a free player. I routinely earn between $25-$30.00 a month in Zen just playing STO. The average 8,000 Dilithium a day player is earning around $10.00 a month in Zen just playing. So it'll be interesting to see what the free players in SWTOR will be earning and buying.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

Vet rewards have been a laughing matter since the 700 day one and even that android gets a chuckle. The best vet rewards have been made prior to the F2P or P2W conversion. Since then it's been dismal what they give.

What I find hysterical about TOR's model is that its completely counter-intuitive.
TOR's problem is that once people are done levelling a toon, there's nothing left to do but roll an alt, or do engame raids/pvp. After they've levelled a couple of alts, all that's left is endgame raids/pvp. By their own figures, two-thirds of the people who initially purchased the game have, in less than a year, decided that the engame raids/pvp aren't worth paying $15 a month for, and have left.
So, people have been willing to pay for the levelling game, which is a pretty rich, immersive experience, at least a couple times through, but haven't been willing to pay for the much shallower endgame.
So their response to this is to give away the 1-50 levelling story (which people have been willing to pay for) and then to charge for the endgame (which people haven't been willing to pay for).
Brilliant!
If only TOR hadn't killed STO...oh wait...it didn't!

you underestimate the greed of EA. they are capable of removing decisions for F2P-ers, so they would have to pay, if they want to decide the story themselves, and not just watch a premade story
BTW - If this article is correct, IMO EA's magement team is insane thinking going F2P will boost the SWToR playerbase to the level they're expecting:
?If we can get two to three million people playing the game, you then start to transition from getting your money upfront, if you will, by selling the game to an ARPU ? average revenue per user model,? Moore said. ?That is the long-term growth plan and we are very optimistic that will work.?
They seriously expect the F2P conversion to net them 2 - 3 million recuring players after the dust settles?
I want some of what the EA brass is smoking. Of curse these are the same folks who stated in a pre-SWToR launch earnings call) that the game would expand at the pace of 1 million users per month, and go head to head wit World of ******** -- and we all saw how that prediction turned out.

Spit on it and polish it up.....its still a TRIBBLE. The only reason it went F2P was because its a TRIBBLE game once you pretty much "beat" it. It has no long term replay value that a MMO is supposed to bring to the table and was bleeding subscriptions en masse.
I think it's hilarious how people always think the grass will be greener somewhere else... To those that think SWTOR is better, that's fine. I'm glad you're enjoying yourselves; but, at this point, none of you have a clue about what their F2P model will be, just like STO's model seems to be still up in the air...oh wait, doesn't EA have a hand in it? Then there's a good chance it will be a Pay to Win model like many of their other games. Even EA's offline games have been known to nickel & dime players to death with DLCs. Hope for the best and I guess we'll see in the Fall when the transition is supposed to occur.
I played the free trial with a bunch of different characters and I have to say that I wasn't impressed at all with SWTOR. I'm a fan of the series and enjoyed certain aspects but am now completely satisfied with my decision of not pre-purchasing the game some time ago. To put it bluntly, the game is barren of great content, PVP is laughable at best, and overall the game left me feeling like I had more fun playing Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory than this. SWTOR followed the trend like many others before it over the last few years and released too soon. Age of Conan was my last pre-purchase of an MMO and some of you know the nightmare of that release followed by the continued slap to the balls.

That link doesn't actually cover a lot of pertinent details, such as how many Cartel Coins a Free player can earn simply by playing - such as how STO players can earn Zen and LotRO players can earn TPs just by playing.
At this point all we know is the overview, much like all we knew about STO was the overview from the Matrix before more details were released. As it gets closer to Fall we'll be getting much more info on the Cartel Store and the like.

you are not going to play it anyway there are far more fun games on the market then Swtor
"Fun" is a subjective word and means different things to different people.

free does not mean play if they come out with a decent space combat like sto ill give it another look but apart from that its a dead end
I know someone who gave STO a shot and even had the DDE put to his account. He's a hardcore TOR fan now. I asked him to come back to STO to give it a look and his reply probably is what sums up both camps. He said, "I don't care for space battles." And that's the difference in the two. Ground there is leagues ahead of what STO has but STO outshines TOR in space. I have yet to see someone say TOR has a great space game. Not even the game's defenders.
But like my friend puts it, if you like space then TOR isn't for you. If you like ground, STO isn't for you. If you like both then play both.
EDIT: And when I said the ground in STO, that means what Cryptic did. NOT THE FOUNDRY. Because the Foundry actually has better content than what Cryptic did.

Stipend is only worth 5 dollars and a sub is 15. So if that's the only reason, it's not one that makes economical sense.

Does it matter if PWE or EA bring it back as FTP?
Nothing says sound strategy like doing exactly what the other guys are doing without having done it before.
Then again, its not a far cry from all the DLCness they've done before.
Oh how i laughed 2-3 million players oh wow 2 million brought the game and thought it was a pile of pooh
if sto had there budget i just cant think to think what they would have achieved what was in total 250million $$$$$$$
Hey, Cryptic, are you going to let this guy trash your other game Champions Online like that?
