Well, now that it's going FTP you can go and do them for nothing. :)

Once WoW succumbs we will know the era of pay MMOs is officially over. :)
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

At first I was like > LOL, then I realised, STO now has another strong competitor. Hopefully it will spark some 'push' from PW.

Thing is, they have a system in place that actually rewards subscribers and rewards past subscribers for their time and money past spent. Something PWE didn't really do. And of course now with a free to play MMO, based in a strong Sci-Fi universe with lots of story content in the market. PW will have to put a fair bit more effort into this game.

feh... read the faq. Still more restricted than STO. F2P players for TOR get restricted access to advanced and group content or so I've read.

Very interesting restrictions. As F2P: Limited Dungeon runs. No access to raids.

Completely contrary to stated Cryptic policy on why walling off content is bad.

PW would be smart to put a fair bit more effort into STO.

I amended your statement. I hope you do not mind.

I do worry that TOR will become more of a money grab than STO is simply becuase G.Lucas is more of a money grabber in my opinion.

Time to cancel another sub. F2P games aren't worth paying a sub when MT unlocks get you the same thing for less money (ala STO).

Pretty sad that many of the urls in the F2P FAQ are currently broken. Looks like someone forgot the http:// in a number of urls and browsers are looking for a page instead of an url.

Hope that's not a sign of their QA.

edit: I don;t see a date when this happens.

Now there's something I've yet to hear. So why does Cryptic say walling off content is bad?

PW has always had the policy that they're not going to restrict content. That's how they handle all their games. You can play everything for free, but if you want all the shiny fuffy parts, you either need to pay or grind.

SWTOR seems to be following LotRO, and will allow people to buy the additional content piece-meal if they don't want to Sub.

I don't see any faults in SWTOR "Free" model. If you don't PVP, you don't need unrestricted access to Warzones. If you don't Raid, you don't need unrestricted access to Operations.

Both of which should be unlockable using real life cash, or via subbing. Their F2P features matrix seem to imply that you MUST be a subscriber to access the Raid content (Operations). One would hope, with more space MMOs being Free-to-play, it's a sign that other space MMOs such as STO need to step up their game, to keep players interested. "Nickle-and-diming" is never a good thing, but outright gouging people for money (Combat EV suits) is worse.

The thing is its only going to hurt people who want to do that stuff... People who dont PVP or raid... arent going to care. Meanwhile people who want to do it are going to either:

    A. See that they have to pay and pay for it.

    or

    B. See that they have to pay... and be annoyed. (And more likely this one)

You dont limit access to content behind a pay wall like that. I should be able to play the full game from start to endgame content fro free and then have to pay for the extra stuff on top of that. Limiting access to Operations in TOR is like limiting access to STFs here... at endgame that the only thing to do... people will leave if they cant play the end game content.... and developers dont want that.

I think TOR is a better overall game than STO. But I have to admit I LOL'ed at the fact Bioware is saying as a paid perk "play unlimited space content". I mean, seriously? That sounds more like a threat then a perk.

Sounds great. For the price of about ?10 to play 8 different storylines it will be all I wanted. I have never been interested in SWTOR for the MMO aspect. I wanted KOTOR 3.

Meh. Hopefully, when the exodus happens, PWE will become concerned enough that they'll alot Cryptic more resources. STO, bugs and all, is still a far superior product, IMHO. SWTOR has about as much to do with Star Wars, as growing beefsteak tomatos, does.

    Thought this was interesting

    http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/367/feature/6609/Star-Wars-The-Old-Republic-Free-to-Play-This-Fall.html

MAKEB AND OTHER CONTENT = FREE?

I asked Matt and Jeff then if the planned content we learned about at E3 would be some of the first ?Content Updates? to be purchased, and they couldn?t go into much more detail than ?yes and no?. For instance, HK51 is something they really want to get in the game sooner rather than later, while Makeb is further down the line. They also have a brand new event for all subscribers coming in August which is a public world event like the Rhakgoul Invasion. I asked if HK51 would then be free for everyone, if he came before the F2P launch, and Jeff said they really haven?t decided because they?re not even sure when he?s going to launch just yet. The goal is to work on the content and get it out as soon as they can, and if some comes after the F2P transition, then they?ll evaluate what is free and what is paid

Wow. That was fast. Even Cryptic managed to milk STO subs longer than that.

point being Cryptic was trying to Milk subscribers, Biowares actually rewarding them for their time and money.

And can someone explain to me why the Forums are randomly quoting other posts I didn't pick to quote?

I think I quit during the beta. When I found out my jedi was armed with a "practice lightsaber" whatever that is. What's he scouring the galaxy for a sparring partner?

I'm both happy and sad about the news.

Happy that I'll have yet another game I can just log into and play with out needing a Subscription.

Sad because I bought into the game when it was getting ready to come out.

And perhaps laughing because the game didn't even last long enough as a subscription based game to reach a year old?
You think that your beta test was bad?

    Glad it's going F2P.

Had to cancel my Subscription, simply because it was getting too costly to maintain it. Now I'll be able to play whenever I want, even without that subscription!! :D

I guess I'm spoiled by STO as you get full access to almost everything, so I won't be jumping this ship for the other game. Now if it was the original SWG that would be another story...

    Hope this link works...
