*He takes his NV kit off and turns on his flashlight as the man in question stops, raising his arms above his head. He takes note of the man's slightly darker skin and the square-cut clothing.*

*The soldier turns back to his compatriot.*

*Present time. John and Colonel Harrison are meeting the man at the Forman sentry post along the border. A Republic medic is running a dermal regenerator over his wounds.*
Man: My name is Sernar Kilarn.
Forman Lieutenant Colonel: As in Senator Sernar Kilarn?
Man: Yes.
*The FLC turns to John.*
FLC: He's part of the Calen Patriots' Council, the Federation's ruling body.
John: What are you doing here?
Sen. Kilarn: My only other option was to stand by as the Federation started a global conflict.
They're going to fire the weapon station, directly on the Central Estate.
FLC: I shouldn't think that'll matter mu--
John: Colonel...
Sen. Kilarn: You don't understand. My people know that the RUSS has given you shielding technology. They're launching a full-scale offensive on the coastal emitters... in two days.
*John looks at Harrison, gravely.*
John: If they take out the coastal emitters...
Harrison: Then the capital will be vulnerable to a strike...
But... the capital should be covered by the inland grid from the weapon's path.
Sen. Kilarn: They're changing the satellite's orbital path to bring it over the coast to coincide with the attack.
But the Chairman's plan hinges directly on the satellite being able to fire when the shield fails.
John: So, if he can't use the satellite, your leader will call off the attack?
Sen. Kilarn: I don't know, but if it looks like the war can not be won without heavy losses, the Council may overrule him.
FLC: What are the exact plans for the attack?
Sen. Kilarn: I don't know. I only know that preparations are almost complete. The plans won't be released until 12 hours before the attack begins, by which time it would be too late!
FLC: The Calen Federation knows that if they attacked the Forman States, it would mean a thermo-nuclear retaliatory strike!
*Kilarn doesn't speak, but shuffles uneasily.*
John: There's more, isn't there?
Sen. Kilarn: The laser will also be in position to hit 3 of the ICBM silos in the Carinoso peninsula, and there have been increased drills in our IRBM sites along the Calari Coastline, with in emphasis on precision timing. They've been targeting your ICBM sites.
FLC: They'll destroy our missile silos before we can react.
John: Don't you have coastal nuclear assets?
Sen. Kilarn: There has been a ban on submarine warfare for 30 years... and we know where their carrier groups are.
We can destroy them quickly before they even know we're there.
John: How?
Sen. Kilarn: We were approached, one year ago, by a Union of aliens, like yourselves. They offered us the means to deter any military action from the UFS and Cargan Alliance.
John: The satellite.
Sen. Kilarn: As time went on, they began to encourage us to prepare for war. They gave us energy shields, magnetic propulsion weaponry, lasers, ion drive, nuclear fusion power...
We have 3 squadrons of thermo-nuclear-powered bombers capable of extra-atmospheric hops ready to hit the Forman Carrier Groups in the Torin Sea, West Kalanic Ocean and Cargan Coast. Our fleets are ready to launch a full-scale assault on the Forman fleets between us and them.
We also have been massing armoured regiments and motorised battalions along the land border, armed with high-intensity IR weaponry.
*Meanwhile, outside, Varnak and Targas are listening to the conversation.*
