Can someone explain why this is a bad thing? I was not going to get it until I found out about the extra options. I can't see how giving us less options is a better thing.

Among other things, there's the fact that, up to this point, you buy a ship and it's accessible to all your characters. If your characters are different classes, you may be out of luck - no idea if it's locked to a specific character or not. I don't know if the different versions are "mandatory" though.

I haven't heard the interview yet and I'm going to avoid passing judgment until then and/or until it hits the c-store. However, while I was strongly considering picking up the +1 Ody, I will not be spending one cent for launching freaking work bees on my engineer, especially since part of the reason I was considering picking up the Ody in the first place was to give more BITE to it. I will also not pay through the nose to get all three versions.

If the different versions are modestly priced and not locked to a specific career, this might be OK, as many have said. But this makes me cringe.

    Work bees... blech.

(Please note, I am not trying to start a rumor about them being "career locked," this is just speculation on my part as a POSSIBLE way of doing this, however much it sucks)

Eeessh... I have to say... It does seem a bit much to break these ships apart. We never did that for any other ship in the game and it is not a great trend. Unless each one costs around 700 C-Points in which case it would be fine because even if you got all three you would only pay slightly more than buying the top end ships in the game. On the other hand this runs you out of ship slots faster if you want all three which is a bit... meh.

Actually, in a way this has been done many times before. Almost every time there's a ship release they do a variation for each class. It's just usually not the same ship class.

Example: Engineering - Galaxy Retrofit, Science - Intrepid Retrofit, Tactical - Defiant Retrofit.

All they're doing is the same thing but this time the lazy way of not making three different ship, but rather just three different refits of the same ship. This has been done before in a weird way in 'Trek; The U.S.S. Bozeman. It's a Soyuz Class Starship, which looks a heck of a lot like the Miranda. Because.. well.. it IS. It's a heavily reinforced Miranda. It goes from Cruiser to Escort in that respect as it's much more heavily armored and armed.

In the STO Universe, this is also less than surprising. As it stands, the way the ships are built is to be modular (hence why you can slap any 'ol bridge and interior layout into any ship.) so it would make even more sense if they were to do something like make a ship even more modular in that a single ship design can be run off the line at the Jupiter Shipyard and mass-produced with the ability to slap any sort of equipment in it to fit whatever situations it will be deployed under. The Federation is at WAR. The KDF, Borg, the Undine, the Dominion, and the Romulans are all smelling blood in the water, Ensigns are being given command of ships almost fresh out of the Academy, and Starfleet is likely struggling to keep up with the demand for ships so being able to manufacture one ship for any situation would be extremely beneficial.

I think its a very smart idea to explore these options for Cruisers in particular as it allows people who might not purchase a ship because it doesn't suit their class explore the option. I don't think it should extend to all ship types though, but it could be made to work if enough unique console/powers can be made - I recall Geko (iirc) saying it takes a long time to come up with unique powers, particularly when they need to reference canon.

Frankly, I think this will just apply to the unique case that is the Odyssey, unless they see a particularly strong take up of purchases. They are certainly likely to attract my interest at least, because of this.

I can see issues with splitting the saucer separation and aux vehicle with different ships, but it depends on what they charge.

Isn't anyone glad it is not a Lock box??

But imagine a group of T5 Galaxies all with different Consoles: Saucer Sep, Aux Craft, Work Bee - and all with a different BOFF configuration to make it more Tactical, Science, or Engineering based. That's what they're doing with the Odyssey. It wouldn't surprise me to see it done with the Galaxy too.

Grand Nagus would be impressed. If you want e.g. a tactical Odyssey but with another console you'll have to buy 2 full ships.

What really gets me is the worker bee console though. If I choose the <insert whichever variant gets it> I get worker bees.....seriously worker bees!?!? Wooo I feel cool now. Can't do saucer separation, can't launch the aux craft, but by god I get worker bees! Do these things at least have some cool new look or are they just going to be the same worker bee design Starfleets been using for decades? Also the shuttle sized craft idea in general seems dumb. Lol I use PDL, AoE torp attack, warp plasma, FAW, or any of the other AoE attacks that will pretty much insta-kill these worker bees....It would be much better if each one got either the saucer separation, the aux craft, or the worker bees as an inherit (read NOT CONSOLE) ability and got the other two as consoles. Also these better be universe breaking-ly strong worker bees otherwise they won't last ten seconds against anything with an AoE attack.

This yields radically different ships with the traditional differences between the different ship lines intact.

They also are not locked to a specific career. PLEASE NOTE I AM NOT TRYING TO START A RUMOR. I don't know if this is true or not. IF they are, then that double-sucks.

Ultimately I just don't buy this. This is almost like saying every tier of ship is basically three versions of the same ship, and that's just not struck me as at all true.

For lack of any stated source by the OP, then frankly, if it's a 2000CP bundle, I won't bat an eyelid, and will consider it value for money as they've essentially provided me a ship that is *guaranteed* to be useful across all three careers.

...But having said that, it had better be a bundle. I think asking me to pay for a ship three times in order to find use for it across three characters is pushing the friendship a little bit, and goes against the spirit of saying that "starships will remain account-wide unlocks".

I'm reserving my opinions til I see what Cryptic plans to do...

now if they will be smart about it (Cryptic lol right :p) they should offer a bundle deal where you pay roughly for 2/3 the coast of all three of the ships or the price of the two most expensive ships (how ever the price scale is) and get the cheaper one free.

for the bortas a BoP , a massive disrupter spam cannon and another i cant recall
go listen to the pod cast :)

I have listened to the latest STOked episode (113) twice now and I did not hear anywhere, where it was mentioned that there would be three versions of the C-store Oddy. I must be missing it. Where was this mentioned?

Agreed. This can be done in an AWESOME way, or it can be done in a really shoddy way. If you sell the Ody with it's +1 aspects modular, that would be great. Hated saucer sep? Fine, don't buy that, 400 CP discount. Don't want an escort? Same deal. Want it all? 2000 C-Point package.

In fact if they did that, at that price, I might buy the bundle JUST to show that it's an awesome idea and encourage them to do more of it.

    I REALLY doubt they'll sell 3 consoles and a ship for just 2000 C-Points.

Makes me wonder if they're running low on funds, as this, combined with the lockbox fiasco, just wreaks of desperation for money.

would you rather they charge a large ammount for one ship giving you consoles you might not want ?
at least this way the ship may have different Boff arrangements and console set ups depending on class so it might actually be useful

They could have made it more universal or keep the ships to a specific design. Making 3 variations of the same ship does not even make sense. It especially does not make sense for such big expensive ships. That would be like to say "Here is a Defiant Class ship... It is set up for heavy combat. Here is another Defiant Class ship which is totally refit to be a Science Vessel...". The class your ship is should determine how it looks (in general), how it behaves, and what its setup is. Otherwise Class becomes irrelevant. I know we love to try to imitate Borg tech but our ships should not get so interchangeable like theirs just yet.

If the big ship purchase I make has consoles I do not want then... why did I buy it to begin with? If you want to extend your own argument why not just let me pay Cryptic to custom build a ship to my tastes? I can think of exactly the BOFF and Console slots I want for any Class of ship. If I can completely customize things then what my ship looks like will just be a skin and mean nothing to actual performance.

The Starfleet ship yards do not build Cruise Ships or Civilian ships. The ships built by both these big fleets are supposed to be uniform and purpose built.

Honestly this doesnt sound all that great to me as I was looking forward to being able to saucer seperate and lauch the escort both. Now i dont have that option unless I buy two ships. Now if they just did it like someone else said and give all ships the consoles but let you buy the ship you most like it'd atleast be alittle better. You would probably still want a different version for different career captains (Tac,Sci,En) but atleast you wouldn't feel as cheated if your just wanting it for one of your captains. Dunno but if I were Cyptic i'd be posting all info now so they can atleast tell everyone getting upset all the facts about it.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if these ship variants turn out to cost over 2000cp each.

Also wondering about why if the variants of the ship have the same stats with just different consoles and console arrangements why the science oriented one would have a unique ability of sensor scan like science ships. That would make getting the science ship have a extra bonus above the rest. Just wondering how they would balance it out to be able to give it a special ability the other two dont get.

Sell the same two ships three times each with a different console? Wow, that's just...

I dunno. I'm speechless at the magnitude of this corporate greed.

I guess, arguably, it's three different ships if there's different BO or console layouts, but this is pretty much my feelings on the matter.

And when will the free version be available again?

I really like this idea, tbh. Now, as a TAC Captain, I won't feel shafted because a VA ship i'd like to fly doesn't have a layout that benefits me.

Ok, I just listened to the Priority One interview. My question is this: Will the Saucer Sep console from the Exploration Cruiser Retrofit work on the Oddy +1? If this is so, then I would get the Oddy with the launchable escort and just use the Galaxy-R console to have both saucer sep and the escort.

Now I'm wondering about the upcoming Galaxy Ship pack. 3 different Galaxy Rs with different abilities, maybe?

i just hope it means it gets something that makes it actually useful.

i don't know about this 3 different versions business, it has a universal station already, this doesn't even seem necessary, unless the c store versions don't have a universal station or something. we will see how this plays out, initial reaction is that this is extremely slimy and a bad trend setter.

Same. But I can hope. As I said, they could do something good or bad with this.

I for one was trying to get a bit more used to my Ody so I could grab a +1 version and maximize its potential there. But if it turns out like we suspect it will, then chances are the Ody's going to rust in drydock for me and I'll retain my Assault Cruiser as my "flagship."

listened to the correct podcast now...

    hmm...
not sure what to think of this.

as i heard it it was one ship skin with identical BOff slots, but with changed up Console Slots...
the ship skin is "slightly" different than what we already got, we will not be able to slot those console on to our free version...
sooo...? will that new c-store ship include the old visuals as customization option?
or are only the visuals only changed so much to allow for the consoles to work?

console slots... doesn't make much sense to me anymore,
we have so many universal consoles by now i don't think it matters any longer if you have one more eng or tac or sci console slot...

and of course every variant comes with a console of it's own. *ugh*
so we are now at selling powers almost directly

seriously, why even bother with the ships any longer? just let me buy those consoles directly, most of the ship skins can't be used at endgame anyway, so they are worth 2 days of playtime at best.

(can i PLEEEASE have those Orion T3 + T4 Ship skins usable on my Tier 5 Marauder?)

*will reserve judgement of the final product and if greedy or not when i see the C-Point pricetag*
