TOR is to ground as STO is to Space.

For the moment space combat is OPTIONAL in TOR, hense the lack of fleshed out content for the moment.
Space isn't all there is to this game. Ground is rough around the edges, but it's still fun.

(except that god damn plasma floor room in Cure Elite)

    ==========

EDIT - Thanks for the random thread merge.
Apprently if you reference SWTOR at all here it gets merged with the big 'ol SWTOR thread

    ==========

So I'm watching Big Bang Theory while playing STO - a funny show.

The boys are going to have a Star Wars weekend, and going to play ..."The Online Game"

Correct me if I'm wrong ... The show is by CBS (Link)
edit : apparently it's syndicated, not owned

CBS also own the rights to Star Trek right? Who approve STO Content?

What a kick in the nacells this is. Why are they not playing Star Trek Online

Now I am all huffy and annoyed

It is a syndicated show. Check out what syndication means for TV Shows and it should explain your inquiry. Here is a snippet however that helps to detail why you see stuff not owned by CBS being used as "ads" in the show:

A syndicated program is sold to stations for "cash" (the stations purchase rights to insert some or all of the ads at their level); given to stations for access to airtime (wherein the syndicators get the ad revenue); or the combination of both. The trade of program for airtime is called "barter".

While market penetration can vary widely and revenues can be unreliable, the producers often enjoy more content-freedom in the absence of network standards and practice officials; frequently, some innovative ideas are explored by first-run syndicated programming, which the networks are leery of giving airtime to. Meanwhile, top-rated syndicated shows in the United States usually have a domestic market reach of 98%.

So, basically, the show's producers have a lot of leeway with the show that they otherwise wouldn't have if they were not syndicated.

No problem! This sort of inquiry is a very common one (I worked at Nielsen Media Research) as is the misconception.

In case you missed the edit to my post above:

"So, basically, the show's producers have a lot of leeway with the show that they otherwise wouldn't have if they were not syndicated."

    *laughs uncontrollably*

I'd take comfort in that if the show wasn't syndicated, it probably wouldn't still be in production. :)

By the way, TBBT is my favorite sitcom of all time, I cannot get enough of it! I've even went and seen my 55 year old mother and 56 year old father laughing their butts off at this show. Even my youngest nieces and nephews all the way to my oldest, 18, love the show also - so it crosses many age ranges.

I strongly doubt, that without syndication, the show wouldn't be both as good and as popular as it is. ;)

I just finished watching the first season through last season on Netflix. Looking forward to watching this current season, which I have missed most of due to wanting to watch it all in order. I do watch all the re-runs, when I can, on TBS though! It is one of the few shows that I can watch again and still laugh my butt off.

I really hope to see more mentions of things like Star Trek / Online and other geeky stuff we love. :)

I actually played SW:TOR for a whopping 8 of my "free" 30 days of subscription time.

    Yeah, it sucked that bad.

And the rooms filled to the rim with crates like it was owned by hoarders? Never seen in a ST ep but we got rooms so full it's hard to move in this game using the Star Trek name.

And how every enemy ship has the same type interiors no matter what faction or indie?

    And many more.

I should point out that SWTOR wasn't SPECIFICALLY named it was just "the online version of the Star Wars game" (real quote). Something tells me they couldn't say "The Old Republic" but they can say "Star Wars" without paying money as that's general pop culture.

Kind of. But not really relevant to pop culture sit coms.

They're playing SWTOR because it's a pop culture reference.

Don't worry, it's just product placement. EA paid for it, it got airtime on the show. Happens all the time (on some shows more blatantly than others).

Writers and producers usually do not like to be told by the networks how to write their scripts. Not only would CBS forcing the writers to advertise its products be disappointing, but probably unethical.

    Nooooo!!!! :p

I think in the end a lot of Star Trek fans are disappointed how poorly the IP has been managed in the last 10 years.

There were a few good ones with Will Wheaton also :p

Reminds me of a funny Episode where they visited the Medieval Festival and Sheldon dressed up as spock pointing out the historical inaccuracies :D

I think the current season has gone a bit down hill when they introduced the two girls.

My two cents... I have no intention of ever even trying SWtOR for two reasons.

One. No video game on the planet is worth $180 a year.

Two. It's EA. I don't buy EA games.

My main reason for not playing "SW: TOR"...
After completely enjoying "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic", I immediately went out to buy "The Sith Lords". Unlike the many fans of the series, I walked away feeling very disappointed. Even though "SW: TOR" looks like a fantastic game, I do not want it to overshadow the first game. Games like "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" come around once in a blue moon, and they should be treasured for all they are worth. Bastilla, Revan, Malek, Carth, etc... All the game's characters left a lasting impression, which cannot be emulated in a sequel or prequel. Regardless about how hard BioWare will try, the first experience with the series is like losing your virginity. You will never experience those feelings again.

Revan's reveal and Bastilla's betrayal brought out an emotional outburst, which will never ever happen in a "Star Wars" game again. "Dragon Age: Origins" was the only other game to make me giddy and cry.

Personally I'm happy in TOR, and i'm not alone, 1.7 million active SUBS. not accounts like cryptic claimed. active SUBS. and as stated above, they've not released in all areas yet. TOR has seen more improvements and adjustments to the game than STO has in 2 years, and its got 11 GIGS worth of new content bug fixes and more coming.

11 GIGS. I think thats the largest single "patch" ever. At least for me.

Sequels never work. Well, except with WoK, Superman II, Empire, etc.

Plus Sith Lords wasn't even done by Bioware but Obsidian and apparently Lucas Arts forced them to rush the ending. Sort of the same rush job Cryptic got with STO from CBS. Now there's a good parallel about this game's shortcomings.

I'm pretty sure at this point we are all aware of this game. Its been the largest source of MMO hype since Warhammer Online came out a few years ago. Last weekend was their final beta weekend, and the final game is slated to be released on Dec 20. With SWTOR racking up pre-orders at an alarming rate will STO be able to stay afloat? Or will it make like a straw hut in a tsunami?

I love the ground in SWTOR and love the space battles in STO. If STO could get their ground game as good as SWTOR's they'd be the perfect scifi mmo. On the same note if SWTOR could get their space game as good as STO's they'd be on top.

Yes. I am. If this game hadn't gone F2P I wouldn't be here. Yes I'll spend some money now and again. Bigger bridge crew, more duty officers, bank space, etc. But $180 a year? For a service that costs them pennies a year per user to run? Man you people make me laugh.

Lets see, we have utility bills to keep the servers electricity supply going, wages for the network engineers, database programmers and support staff, on top of that you have wages for the janitors and the cafeteria staff. So that's what, assume $200,000 a year to start with.

Then you have to factor in the wages for the development teams (Star Trek Online development team and the Cryptic Engine development team) and the money spent ensuring they have the software/hardware they need.

Pennies a year may be a slightly off a little don't you think?
