I'll throw my 2 cents in as well and say yes please fix this it's annoying as hell. If it's a mining laser then fine but why are there chunks of rock coming off of my metal ship? The smoke screen effect is also over the top, it can be negated somewhat by trying to track the target at an angle but the fact you have to do that at all should be a hint that the power needs to be adjusted.
I agree... I do not want to fight any ships with the mining laser anymore... I don't have any lag issues, but the graphics make no sense and annoy the heck out of me. Fighting is supposed to be fun... not something I pay to suffer through
Isn't that one of the signs of the coming apocolypse?
The end in nigh.
And yeah...don't understand the rocks myself. I can live with the rocks, but I hate how the smoke obscures my view completely so I can't get the firing arcs lined out right,
Make that 9. Those effects are too over done. They obstruct everything.
The gorn fire red beams (I'm guessing some sort of heat beam?) that cause a huge smoke cloud and red-hot boulders to imminate from my ship. Its a cool effect, but considering it takes over a large chunk of screen real estate and completely obscures my ship in a ball of rock spewing smoke, I'm wondering if maybe it couldn't be dialed back a tad?
Thanks.

110% Agree with this. And honestly, why would a 'Mining laser' cause my hull to thow off rocks in the first place; yes, it's a laser used to mine asteroids, but in Star trek, I neever saw a Fed starship made out of stone.
I think the mining lasers impair the maneuverability of the ship, but the effect is just too annoying! not one person has disagreed so far, if that isn't an indication of a serious problem I don't know what is. If you ignore all the posters, your something i cannot describe adequately on this forum!
for me it's less the graphics strain and more the idea that my ship is apparently actually just an asteroid that was carved and painted to look like a ship.
This is my take as well. Why would a beam hitting me cause chunks of rock to appear? Should probably change it to sparks.
Yeah...mining laser was a good idea, and makes sense for Star Trek...rock chunks flying off of your ship when you are hit with a mining laser makes no sense. And Smoke? really? Smoke...lots and lots of smoke...coming off of my shields...in space.
While I ABSOLUTLY agree with thinning the smoke particles a LOT (I have an ATI card, and they HATE particles... eject warp plasma is a NIGHTMARE on my machine) ...considering it's such an extreme and impressive effect, it REALLY needs to have some more DAMAGE potential. Even if it were accumulative damage.
For example, lets say a standard phaser beam array does 100 damage (Obviously my figures arent accurate, but for explination purposes... I embellish) which is low, but not as bad as turrets.
Can we get the mining laser to do some weak damage at first, but for every accurate -hit- on our ship, perhaps the damage goes up .5%? So lets say the laser does 50 damage to start. It hits and does 50, it hits again and does 75, it hits again and does 100, again it hits and does 125... so on and so on.
The reasoning: It's a freaking MINING LASER. It is designed to BORE through solid ROCK from SPACE. It conceivably slice through asteroids that have been solidified by eons of pressure and heat. So if it was meant to cut through such solid stuff... shouldn't it do more than just be a screen annoyance? I got blasted by no less than 3 Gorn ships all firing this annoying thing at my ship. I had a STANDARD shield array that CAME WITH MY MIRANDA SHIP... and with all 3 blasting away, my shields BARELY dropped below 98%. Their torpedoes did more damage to my shields than their lasers. How sad is that?! LOL
It's a laser that generates tremendous heat, and the heat energy should continue to build and build. I mean, right?
I rather like the mining laser as is, honestly... <_<
But if they were to tone down anything, I'd suggest they do that to the rocks emanating from my ship unless they actually target the asteroids by my ship. I could stand to see some variety in the enemy's method of attacking.. blowing off a chunk of an asteroid so that it tumbles like a Heavy Plasma projectile and does Transphasic Torpedo damage when it collides would definitely mix it up.

I think you may be insane, but thats cool.
I'd like the smoke decreased in size so I can tell which way the damn ship is pointed. If your game mechanic involves firing arcs, then you either
A.) don't use an effect that obscures the player ability to determine their orientation relative to the enemy
or
B.) Add an angle-of-attack or orientation indicator to the HUD

Hmm, anyone heard anything about whether this is being addressed? I checked a bit of the dev tracker, but it looks like it should be renamed the DOFF tracker.
Should be some patch notes coming out later today that outline the changes made from build 1 to build 2 of the F2P Beta. Cross your fingers they did something about the mining laser effect.

Also, didn't The Outrageous Okona and Conundrum establish that lasers couldn't even penetrate navigational deflectors?
but that "blind them with rock and smoke" effect is driving me crazy.. so yes, I also agree with everyone else.

Cool effect, but a bit more visibility and less of this effect would be really nice.
Meanwhile, I will continue to fly around in the U.S.S. Lava Rocks and wait patiently to level past Gorn missions.
Oh...wait...they don't give you enough dilithium to buy a tier 3 ship? Ummm. Well.
TRIBBLE it. I'll go fight Romulans in my Tier 2 ship just to get away from the stupid mining lasers.

Definitly need to be toned down.

Nope. I don't like it. Not one bit.
I might be the only one to think this, but I would like to see this mining beam as a new Gorn KDF weapon. >__>

You mean that you dont count the USS Magnetize as a Starfleet ship..
But Cryptic please start working on this.... its daft as daft can be.
