Gorn heat beams (I think...) animation is a little too much

Can you guys tone that down a little?

The gorn fire red beams (I'm guessing some sort of heat beam?) that cause a huge smoke cloud and red-hot boulders to imminate from my ship. Its a cool effect, but considering it takes over a large chunk of screen real estate and completely obscures my ship in a ball of rock spewing smoke, I'm wondering if maybe it couldn't be dialed back a tad?

    I agree, it can get very difficult to keep track of weapon arc's and shield facings when you can't see your ship.

    It's called the Mining Laser... and apparently the Borg use the same thing, except instead of red hot boulders, it's white sparklies for the Cutting Beam...

    And yes... my screen turns into a giant gray cloud when 3 gorn ships hit me at once with those infernal devices... a toning down would definitely be appreciated.

    Agreed, it really lags me out a lot when they use the beams.

    Agreed. One frigate firing that beam completely obscures my ship. I don't like it very much. The effect just doesn't look right. I could understand if they were firing them at asteroids, but my ship isn't made out of a raw asteroid.

    It is the only thing in the entire game that causes my fps to drop. Especially when 3 are having at you at once.

    Yea i would suggest dropping the sprites created by about 50%.

    Yes, this weapon of theirs doesn't do anything either. I haven't noticed any notable damage from it other then covering up my ship making the game feel less fun.

    Crank up the damage,
    remove the boulder geometry (ships aren't made of rocks) &
    scale down the smoke generated to about 50%.

    for me it's less the graphics strain and more the idea that my ship is apparently actually just an asteroid that was carved and painted to look like a ship.

    And yeah...don't understand the rocks myself. I can live with the rocks, but I hate how the smoke obscures my view completely so I can't get the firing arcs lined out right,

    Yeah, the fx could stand to be dialed back on the mining lasers and ... what are they supposed to do anyway? My thought was that maybe they were a beam weapon stronger against the hull, kind of like torpedoes are ... they sure weren't accomplishing anything against my shields.

    I agree very much. I like the idea, and it looks good... but it must be toned down, especially the sheer size of the debris being thrown off the ship's hull. If that debris were smaller, more realistically sized, this might look great.

    agreed. i hate them, i know they are drilling lasers but my ship is not made of rock and the effect is over the top on screen.

    You guys are missing the point of the "Obscuralaser". It's not meant to do any real damage, it's meant to do three things: Obscure your screen, drop FPS and make you go "what was that?!" ;):D

    It has to go, completely, as in a 100% tone down. It makes my game lag incredibly, and I already have my graphics turned down to near-minimum.

    So the point is to annoy the playerbase with a weapon that doesn't do actual damage and makes my screen a black hole?

    Well, if so...Mission Accomplished. I am annoyed by it.

    Please Cryptic..dial it back a few notches on the annoy-a-meter.

    Cryptic you need to take the heat beams back to the drawing board, the beams themselves are see-through and look like advertising for a barbershop, the smoke-cloud looks good but could be scaled down in Tranperacy and size, and those boulders feel like they should be coming out of a volcano not starship.

    1.9/10 in enjoyment factor for this effect.

    Agreed, It makes no sense for red hot boulders to fly from my ship. And definitely dial back on the smoke.

    It is ridiculous. It completely obscures the view of anything while it's running, despite the fact that it's pretty harmless.

    I don't hate the effect. The idea of beams actually carving out the damage that my ship is always looking like it received is cool. However I agree it should be turn off able for fps reasons and shrunken down so my titanium plating flying off is not the size of my saucer. But again I think it's cool enough that a modified version should stay in game.

    Just want to throw my agreement in here as well. It's too much on the animation. It looks like they fire candy cane beams that spit Horta. It's not a good look.

    needs a target if statement:

    if object_asteroid then
    activate mining laser
    else if player_ship then
    do not activate mining laser
    end if.

    It's total agreement: the weapons on the Gorn Vishap Frigate suck. ;)

    Yeah, it's definitely too much. My graphics card can handle it but I hate it because I can't see the ships firing at me, I have to look at my weapons icons to tell what I can fire (or just keep hiting the "fire all weapons" button.) I don't know that they were thinking, but I hate fighting those things.

    The new graphic for the Gorn's attack (heat beam what ever its called) looks interesting but on the smaller ships completely covers them. Can't see where your shooting hardly or the nice new shield graphics. Over all its just a bit to much. Suggest keeping the graphic but maybe shrinking it if that is a viable option.

    I have to agree as well. About the only thing anyone can do is back out so your ship is smaller to get away from the engulfment... waay too annoying. Great graphic though. :)

    Of course, the fact that everyone is in total agreement that the animation needs to be reduced probably means it won't be changed., or tat it will get supersized and obscure the entire screen. :D

    I don't want them to get rid of it entirely. Just dial back the smoke and the maybe do something different with the rock chunks. Unless we are all flying around in the USS LIMESTONE, I just don't see rocks as being appropriate debris.

    I don't suppose there's a chance of an incoming ship mounted mining laser device, that we could use to mine Dilithium from the over abundance of asteroids we see in star systems is there? :p
