How about instead of making the pet(s) trade-able which I think would ruin the boutique/cash items, allow the pet to be exchanged back to Mrs. Zoologist for a portion of your 'source of force' or 'phoenix feathers' back. Not necessarily all 9,999 but a portion them?

I actually kind of like this idea. But just to make regular food that we can buy or replace the use for a tome doesn't make much sense.
