Isn't it about time a mod locked this thread since its going nowhere.
All I read on the past few pages is an endless argument between the entire community and 1 person.

Oh MeaMoeYao, there's no reason to get this mad.Didn't do much research before making that claim, did you? A quick Wikipedia search would've solved that.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Player_character
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_%28computing%29

While the terms can be used interchangeably in casual settings, the two terms have entirely different meanings. An avatar is a pixelated or otherwise graphical representation of the player or another real person, while a character has it's own fictional name, personality, sex, and other details.

It's not logical. It's illogical to ask in that way. "Are you a guy or girl IRL?" would be proper, a simple "Are you a guy or girl?" is still addressing the character, whether you want to assume it's addressing the IRL person or not.

No, I don't make that distinction. In fact, one of the main reasons for the existence of MMORPGs is to have social computer games. The context of the socializing is the issue here.

I am not, and I have already refuted that point.

If you'd only listen to reason, you wouldn't think I'm lying. And you wouldn't be so mad right now.

Listen to someone who shares the logic of a 5 year old, contradicts themself in almost every post, like Mr Dark said, you indeed exhibit the signs of a sociopath and therefore listening to you, instead of trying to enlighten you would be detrimental to the argument, if you read back at on point I was trying defend your shortcomings but now I agree whole heartidly that you lack the capability to be truthful to yourself, let alone anyone else, good day.

In interest of disclosure, I'll preface this with pointing out I'm a friend of Noel's.

Now that that's out of the way, what are you idiots going on about with lying being a sign of sociopathy? If no one is hurt by a lie, how is it wrong? While sure, there are some moral philosophies that treat lies as always wrong, most workable ones only consider it wrong if the lie causes harm. If someone is lying about their sex/gender/age/height/race/religion/whatever but not using it to gain items, where is the harm?

Not that it matters, as if you read Noel's posts, you'll see Noel was talking about refusing to answer the question of being male or female irl, not lying about it. See the following post:
I'm kinda experienced with the subject of opposite-sex characters, and I dislike my IRL sex to be known by random strangers. A lot of the time I'm asked it, it's in faction chat or another long game distance chat where they can't see my character. And when they ask me "are you a boy or girl?" when my character is standing in front of them, I usually say "you can see me!", "isn't it obvious?", "just look at me" or something similar. Only half the time will they go "I meant IRL", which will prompt me to say "That's a secret" or "not telling".

Though I see your point, I feel that it is irrelevant in favor of inciting distinction between character and player, which is sorely absent from this community. As evidenced by for example by some players' use of the term "male Veno". But for what it's worth, I'm against exploiting one's sex, both IRL and in-game.

Note the "I meant real life" is met with not answering the question. Also, I can attest that Noel has not received any items by pretending to be the opposite sex. Sure, you don't have any reason to believe me, but I don't really care if you do or not.

Most of those aspersions are baseless assertions. You've convinced yourself that your opponent is mentally ill, so you've ceased to try to understand their views. You deny most of my points vigorously without counterpoint, not to mention getting increasingly angry.

I know it's common procedure around here to just dismiss random newbs on credibility, but you and a few others seem to have blindly made a habit of that with most everyone. When you encounter someone that don't agree with you that isn't just spouting noob garbage, you seem like you don't know how to act outside of the hostility and anger you're used to displaying.
You have no grasp of logic, do not speak of it again. facts backing up facts backing up facts. Go google that too.
    Nor do you, it seems.
In your world you are right, and everyone else (in this thread) is wrong. Great logic.
Going by your logic, skeptics and atheists are wrong because the world is mostly theistic(who mind you can't agree on which god to worship)

I would've thoroughly enjoyed this discussion if your goal wasn't merely to antagonize me for providing a different viewpoint.

Edit: SYN! How have you been? <3

In almost every post you distance yourself from your online presence, indicating that any lies you might tell aren't decietful because you're playing a character.

Based on this fact alone, everything else that spews from your fingertips is spurious, all subsequent comments, opinions, flawed logic, are tainted by the fact that you do not believe in being truthful to another online presence.

So, you are technically a liar, and perpetuate your own agenda with these lies, sociopathic one might wonder.

    Anyone intelligent reading would agree.

So what you're saying is, if someone doesn't want to reveal their sex in an online game, or wants to keep their real world identity separate from a character they play in said game, they're lying about everything and must be a sociopath? Just want to know if I"m reading you correctly. This is a yes or no question by the way.

Also, I find it highly amusing that you're going on about flawed logic, while attacking the poster, rather than the argument the poster has presented. If what Noel is saying is flawed, surely it would not be an issue to counter it without resorting to things like "You're a lying liar who lies!" or "You're a sociopath!" There's a phrase for that sort of thing. Ad hominem.

If you think those such as "I'm a guy" or "I'm a girl" are so deceitful, then why support things like "Oh my class? I'm an Archer", or "Sorry, you're a Wizard, you can't receive BP"? Or maybe "Yeah, I'm Earthguard"?

It's the same deal. And if you disagree that it is, that's a logical fallacy called "special pleading", and your argument fails. Your character has not only a class, but a sex as well. You can't logically use one term and throw out the other.

Not addressing the rest of your post, as it's just more unintelligent insults.

Ignoring that refusing to answer a question is not in fact lying, if dishonesty is dishonesty, would you claim that the following are morally equivalent?

Lying to keep your drug dealing friend from being arrested.

Lying about being a girl to get free items in an online game.

Lying about being a guy in an online game to avoid sexual harassment from horny 14 year old boys.

Lying about whether that dress makes your girlfriend look fat.

Lying about Jews hiding in your attic to the Gestapo.

Personally I'd only consider the first two wrong, the first much more so than the second, and the last one pretty damn upstanding.

It's not logical. It's illogical to ask in that way. "Are you a guy or girl IRL?" would be proper, a simple "Are you a guy or girl?" is still addressing the character, whether you want to assume it's addressing the IRL person or not.

Sorry to relive the flamefest here but id just like to point out one thing here, without any insult whatsoever. I think what most people disagree with here is this statement of yours. While it might be imprecise to ask "Are you a guy or girl" and you might pure logically assume it might be the characters gender that is in question; it doesnt really make any sense to assume that. Simply because theres no reason anyone would be interested in your characters gender (aside from if you would want to marry ingame or embrace for chi-gaining). If people ask you that, in 99% of the cases they want to know your IRL gender, because that might make a difference in how they think of you. And i dont mean here that they would think better or worse of you; just so they can have a clearer picture of you. If you dont want that, of course you dont need to answer; im just trying to explain what people probably aim at if they ask this question. Like in my case, i like to know whether the person im chatting with is male or female, cuz you also tend to talk about different things depending on the other persons gender.

Hope you can follow my train of thought, its maybe written a little bit incoherent; but my main point was that if people ask you that, they usually mean your IRL gender even if they dont spell it out; cuz most people are more interested in your IRL gender than your characters gender.

I don't understand. I personally have no interested in what anyone is IRL, nor would it change the way I think of them. I don't see how it would, or should, really. Unless you're trying to hook up in an online game... why?

I don't understand how that could lead to a clearer picture of them either... I never picture any aspect of anyone I know IRL when I'm gaming with them, nor does it help if I become aware of a stranger's IRL information. I see no reason here.

And even if there was reason, there's nothing wrong with hiding your IRL information either, as long as the relationships stay in-game.

I'm hoping that you'll clarify, as I'm interested in a proper conversation here. Though I'm half asleep(sleeping disorders ftl)

I cant really explain how it changes my view of other persons; but still if i chat with someone i tend to behave different if i know if its a guy or a girl. If its a girl i tend to write more "cute", with boys its more casual. I cant explain why but its the same as in IRL, if i talk to boys IRL its different than if i talk to girls IRL. And while its ofc true that this is a game and you dont need to tell anything personal about yourself, i like to get to know the person behind the other screen a little bit more if im talking to that person regularly. Because for me MMOs also have some social aspect to it where you can meet people who are interested in similar things than you. Who knows, you might find just nice aqauintances, good friends or even a partner. Feor me, i found all three kinds in this game, and the only way you can meet new people is if you open up to them. But ofc, if you dont want that, then you dont need to; since you also need to be very careful not to give out too much information to strangers. Rather get to know them better first then telling all about yourself only to find out its a creepy stalker behind the keyboard.

So yeah, this is why i like to know the other persons gender, i like to get to know people i meet on this game, as long as they want that too. But if someone doesnt want to, then i dont hold a grudge againts this person either, everyone can choose their own level of involvement. The only thing i dont like is if someone deliberatly lies about himself, be it in gender or any other matter... id rather hear that the other person doesnt wanna be involved with interpersonal relations than thinking i met a new friend only to find out hes a fraud.
