Does any gm or moder \ community manager responded on this thred?

Guess I'm gonna be the first. I'm going to start out with this: I understand where you all are coming from. Understand this though: PWE has been pressured by many people to make WC more friendly to younger eyes. This, however ill-conceived you might believe it to be, is their way of doing that. I will make sure that frankie reads through these threads, because your concerns as a player-base do matter to me, at least. Please keep the conversation civil, and we'll see if we can't get a solid answer on this. Thanks!b:thanks

The scope of this censorship is asinine. PWI went way overboard with it. I agree there should be a way to turn on/ turn off the filter so those that are easily offended can turn it on and see **** all day. But seriously this new censorship filter is not the way to go.

That 4 people who voted no? If people want to talk about sex, drugs etc. they will do it even with super-duper badwords filter. + Now impossible to pm some people. And nothing in patch notes about it…

yep no one under thirteen, therefore this filter is innapropriate. I personally consider this laziness on the part of the GMs. What happened to being online, in game and actually you know, being there? :|

It's about intent usage and reception. I could tell you that I have a beautiful black **** that you would love but because of common usage and reception you wouldn't get it as "I have a black grouse bird". Of course using the correct context to avoid misinterpretation can be done by us, but not by the game filter.
As a side information most if not all major MMO's have "Niger" and other such words filtered as well. What others are saying about Japan, etc I can't comment.

Use common sense rather than brick-walled principles.

There are somethings that are always going to be used, but censoring a country's name is just wrong. You can say oh well people will use it to bypass filters yada yada yada. Those people should be banned for bypassing the censors. Common sense tells you not to censor a countries name, especially since they've expanded to parts of Africa. South Africa even has a zhen option now. Japan is a filtered word now, as is red wings. Their filter went overboard. And just because other MMOs did it doesn't make it okay. Niger is a country, it deserves the same recognition and equal status as every other country. Japan is a country, it deserves the same recognition and equal status as every other country. You can't compare grouse bird to this because a grouse bird isn't a human being.

Yes, it's a sad thing for Nigerians who can't say their own country's name, however there is no other way to prevent abuse. Take World Of Somecraft, probably the most PG + player conscious game out there, they have an eight figure active player-base spanning the entire globe and still filter "Niger" and similar words. It is true that they also have a Maturity Filter option, but the same point remains.

P.S - The bird served as an example to the general idea of it all, not Niger in particular.
    P.S.S - Again not commenting Japan,etc

So it's acceptable to subject minors of thirteen and over to uncensored material? o_O I don't believe that's what you meant, but it does come across as that.

I have played since the latest update and honestly didn't notice anything different - therefore, I haven't voted in this poll yet.

Edit: just read another thread about this and some of the words which are censored..PW have gone ridiculously over the top..revert it until a more sensible compromise can be found.

I don't think "reverting it back to the way it was" is an option now. Instead, remove it, make it optional, or people find a way to edit it themeslves. Enough of this useless censor garbage. This isn't communist China.

But the game did come from it. b:shocked

So it's acceptable to subject minors of thirteen and over to uncensored material?

    basically? yeah.

i'm trying to think back to my own long-ago teenage years here, and i can't think of any written material i have access to now as an adult that would have badly scarred me back then. not even though i was a pretty sheltered kid; i still read stuff, and most of the bovine scatology that floats across worldchat normally... i heard worse in the hallways of my high school.

as for the sexual matters? i was a teenager --- i was thinking and saying sexually explicit stuff all the time. seriously, i'd be much more worried about exposing teenagers to the in-game violent imagery.

if you're really worried about what kind of material teenage kids might have access to, read the bible. especially revelations, parts of numbers, and maybe the song of songs. you still okay with kids having access to that kind of hair-raising crapola? worldchat should be a breeze, then. and if not? hey, go censor your local church...

(yes, i know there actually are bowdlerized bibles out there. it is to laugh.)

If the parents have consented to their children being on PWI, then yes. If a parent wants their child to stay away from the language the real world uses, then they should not let their children play.

Or more accurately, if they want their kids to be free of all the "naughty words" we have in our language, they should lock their kids in a soundproof room for the entirety of their existance and ensure that they have zero contact with any human beings other than themselves. >_> Because god forbid that children learn to use curse words responsibly! That would mean they'd first have to learn them! D:

Honestly, I didn't mind the old filter (even though I believe censorship in general is a load of garbage). And I haven't read the full blocklist yet (as I assume it's NSFW). But if this is defacing people's character names, there's a problem. Come on, PWE. You should know better than this. If someone made a name that obviously breaks your rules, it should be caught by the creation system before the character ever exists. If you're going to change the rules, investigate existing names on a case-by-case basis. You owe it to your playerbase.

Frankie et al, take heed. This is a serious issue that's not going to be solved with just meaningless words from the staff. Need I remind you of the "mod riots?" ._.

Yes, I'm still a stubborn holdout in favor of the old game. Haters gonna hate. ;]

For the argument of suggesting those 13 and older to stuff. They have access to the internet where there is far worse things such as 4chan. Hell watch a movie or tv show. Read a book, and you will find offensive things that 13 year old shouldn't be seeing.

Some parents can and do block certain sites. The idea that it's out there anyway doesn't hold legal water in the country that it's in. And quite frankly is stupid. You wouldn't sit down with your 13 year old son and throw on a porno would you? But it's out there! On the internet! That being said, PWI's terms of service explicitly state that this game is for 18+ or whatever the age of majority is in the country you're playing in. It actually says that. So even if they still want to keep a family friendly environment, which is certainly their right and is also explicitly stated in the ToS there are better ways to about this. Heck, all this really does is help them see the dirty words inside other words. Like, did you know the word chastity is censored? So ironic. And stupid.

Alienating one group of minorities (by implying their origins is a dirty word) so that you don't alienate another group of minorities is stupid. Just because world of somecraft (lol love this) is dumb enough to censor it doesn't make it right. The world has done a lot of f'ed up stuff that was popular at the time, don't make it right. And no, it's not the only way to stop people from doing this.

Your personal experiences at younger ages and opinions resulted from that are subjective and also irrelevant to the law.
    -

P.S - To the above post "some of our games may contain mature contents not suitable for anyone younger than 18 years of age. We will require that you confirm that you are 18 years of age or older to access such content."

P.P.S - Venus, it might be arbitrary, but that's the price to pay for a world of chan-mouths, and it is the only way when you have to monitor millions of people.

How is Japan an offensive word? You wanna lock out the Japanese PW servers too? If it's the whole history book thing that's your country's problem, don't bring MMO's into it...

And censoring out player names is just beyond stupid. Are we trying to revert to 1940's? Seriously, fix this.

most average 13-year-olds need no adult assistance to find their own ****. they didn't even back in my days, in the pre-internet stone age when we had to carve our own ones and zeroes out of rock.

LMAO at the stone age comment. Just because they could do it without assistance doesn't mean they will. Personally, I was told not to look at porno at 13 and I didn't. Can honestly say I was a pretty innocent middle schooler who did what she was told for the most part. That's thanks to my parents moderating stuff that I consumed and watched. That and a rather detailed slide show of diseased privates that made a few kids in my class faint when I was in 6th grade. XD Sex ed was hardcore that year in school. lol. Anyway, some people home school their kids and contrary to popular belief some kids blossom at later ages than others. I became more interested in high school not middle school. All my friends were the same way. There are people out there like that and their parenting decisions are just as valid as yours. They have the legal right to consent to a moderated game that promises to keep it clean and expect them to do so.

That being said, and as I said before, the ToS clearly states that even though they plan on banning people that interrupt game play by using certain language that isnt' allowed, the game is still for people 18+ and up. Which basically boils down to, "we'll ban it when we see it and it's excessive but we aren't going to take legal responsibility and monitor this 24/7 therefore we are restricting this game to be for only those who are of the age of majority in their country. If you lie and come here anyway, it's not our problem. So the decision to have THIS strict of a censor is baffling and stupid. A lot of the words being banned aren't even bad words such as Japan or Chastity. There should be an option for grown adults to at least have private conversations in guild/whisper without the need for a censor, even if they do decide to keep the censor for world/general chat. (Which I don't really have a problem with, it's one it messes up people's characters and guilds and private conversations that it's gone too far.)

NUUUU SUGGESTION BOX. Ok They've really messed up now. People with banned names can't even receive pms and this thread has just been moved to suggestion box. If this isn't given a proper response by a GM and if this censor bs isn't changed, there could be serious issues in the game and forums in the near future.

...i truly don't mean this as an insult, but you're describing a seriously messed up upbringing. seriously, i'm alarmed at this.

sixth graders do not need to be grossed out to the point of fainting; if they are, that should not count as "education", that's indoctrination or something worse; and if THAT is acceptable fare when delivered by an adult authority figure such as a teacher, then there is NOTHING in a video game's world chat that could be called inappropriate without the most blatant hypocrisy.

although, if that's the standard for education here in these united states (i wouldn't know, i immigrated as an adult) then i guess that WOULD explain quite a lot actually...

sex ed for me, in europe, consisted of "this is what prophylactics look like, and these drawn posters explain how to use them. any questions?" it was assumed we all already knew why one might want to use such, and indeed we did. (ideally we would have had that explained too, earlier on, so we wouldn't have had to learn about it through schoolyard gossip. more of those semi-abstract drawn posters could've done the job admirably. though now i think about it, the dairy farm kids probably had the best reproductive biology lessons of us all from watching some calvings...)
