So, I'm writing this essay for my college 2010 English class and I need to gather some data (mind you, I'm posting this same question in a couple of areas so that I can get the most responses for my paper).

My essay's topic is based upon predictions of what will happen on December 21, 2012. I'm currently doing research on political views, religious views, and now... I'm posting a poll for the general public's views (may be some personal views, depends if I can find some credible people - like experts and whatnot). Like I said, it's based upon predictions, so I would like to know what those predictions are - stupid and all.

However, if you'd rather remain anonymous, that's fine also. You can just submit your vote and not make a statement; that's also perfectly fine. I just need data after all.

My only request is to not discriminate others for their ideas because I will regard them all seriously - and a few may even become quoted in my paper with credits due. If I particularly like yours, I may send you a PM and inquire more information from you.

Edit: By the way, I can't seem to add in the "Undecided" option for the poll. If a moderator could do that for me, that'd be pretty awesome. I guess those that would vote "Undecided" could either hold their votes until later (if it happens to magically get added that is) or just not be undecided and pick one for the sake of my essay, lol. Either way, I appreciate all the feedback <3

    Well, I'm not entirely sure. It could end up like the ridiculous y2k of the turn of the century 10 years ago, maybe the people who calculated the date of the end of days screwed up somewhere. Or maybe it really will all come to an end. Of course, we can't forget the legend of the crystal skulls, that all the skulls will be found and brought together when the human race is in need of them. So maybe in the next 2 years the crystal skulls will be brought together and we'll all be saved. Who knows. However I'm voting no as the chances that it would all end are astronomical, and I like to go with the odds.

    If you could just submit the vote No in the poll too please, that'd be helpful, since that is what I will ultimately be looking at when providing the statistics in my paper. I'd really rather not have to search the entire thread for all the definite Yes's and No's just to get my numbers.

    The movie 2012 kind've freaked me out a bit. All this random snow we're getting here is freaking me out...it's almost like Mother Nature is PMSing.

    But no.

    I don't think the world is going to end at 2012. I talked to my dad lots about it and he pretty much was set on the conclusion that it wasn't going to end either. IMO, it's as ridiculous as global warming. s:

    LOL, I totally understand what you meant, I used to make jokes in high school that the Mayans never finished their calendar because the Spanish Conquistadors came in and stopped production. b:laughb:laughb:laugh

    says in the above link that it will come closer than TV satelites, that's way to close for Earth's gravity to not catch it and too close for us not to be hit.

    That's a unique idea, and I would have thought about incorporating it... but the source is someone's Astronomy blog, so I don't think I could really use it. I like what you're thinking though, I'll have to research a bit more to see if any of it is accurate. It would make for a nice conclusion, lol.

    Edit: Nevermind, I just clicked the link on his name, and he's got a Ph.D. I think he's credible enough. :P

    Not with its density no. You need a dense asteroid to pew pew it so that it gets knocked off course not split into more asteroids that we have to worry about.

    you do realize that since about 44BC there have been hundreds of "the world is going to end" predictions

    the 2012 date is based off of several things:

    - Mayan and Aztec calendars which predict the end of the age on Dec 21, 2012

    - Michael Drosnin, author of "The Bible Code," found a hidden message in the Pentateuch (the first five books in the Bible) that predicts that a comet will crash into the earth in 2012 and annihilate all life.

    -The Mayan calendar has many divisions of time: months of 20 days, years of 360 days, katun of 7200 days and a baktun of 144,000 days. Their calendar started on 3114-AUG-13 BCE with the birth of Venus. They expected the world to last for exactly 13 baktun cycles. They anticipated the end of the world near the Winter Solstice of 2012.


    keep in mind there is a prediction for 2011:

    - beginning Friday, May 21, 2011 and the Earth finally being destroyed on October 21st, 2011:From the book: "We Are Almost There" by Harold Camping and Brian Miller D.S.


    further out predictions:

    -2016: In 2016, one such disease will spread and kill all of the humans on the planet. an article in Weekly World News describes a find by a Professor Lloyd Cunningdale of Salt Lake City

    -2029: as stated previously

    -2034: John Denton. (Bible Research & Investigation Co) based on the promises to Abraham

    -2047-SEP-14: According to The Church of !BLAIR!




    although many of these predictions may be from wack jobs, the point is why believe one over the other. look up predictions that were made for the 1980-2000 years. you all might be surprised

    The Mayan calender doesn't end on 12/21/2012. Once it reaches the date (13-0-0-0-0 in the Mayan calender) then it just starts over from the beginning (0-0-0-0-0). The end of the calender doesn't mean that the world will end, it signifies a 'new start' or 'rebirth' of sorts.

    Frankly, all the hysteria about 2012 is people being stupid and wanting something to happen (Y2K anyone?).

    I personally don't think the world is gonna end on 2012. However I'm still telling everyone the world is gonna end followed by some scientific kinda stuff with the hopes of scaring people. :/

    As stated before, it's like Y2K all over again. Everyone thought that the turn of the century would cause everything with a computer chip in it to malfunction. Now people think that the world will end in 2012 because of something the Mayans wrote down that probably had nothing to do with any kind of destruction.

    And, once we all wake up safe and sound on Dec. 13th 2012, it probably won't take very long for the next apocalyptic scenario to come around, convincing the world will end when Venus's atmosphere flares out to kill s us all, or some other ridiculous thing like that. It's only a matter of time till it happens.

    The only true "end of the world" won't happen until the Sun dies in several billion years. And by then the human race will either have made it into space where it wouldn't matter, or been wiped out by something else.
