i agree about not handing over a credit card to anyone let alone a child but here's another cold hard truth....you only have to enter the info for them once and , if you aren't compouter literate a child or anyone else can bring that info up over and over again , using auto fill in ...so some more cautionary advice wipe your info each time you use it ...or as i like to do i use a finger print scanner for my info ...just MHO

I don't think this kid is going to learn anything from this without some severe.... and I mean SEVERE punishment.

By doing what he did, he's already declared that he doesn't care about his grama and his ailing grandpa, doesn't care about his familiy, or anyone else for that matter.

It is now a matter of physical and psychological warfare, he MUST be convinced that he is lower than dirt and lower than the lowest scum of the earth, or he's just going to keep doing it every time an opportunity presents itself.....hurt the family and the family will hurt YOU!

I'd support the perm-ban option, too. Though releasing his name is out of bounds, that's kind of why Orinj censored them in this thread.

My biggest question is: how old was this kid? o.O

    i meant releasing his IGN(s)

This is sad, but not the first time its happened I'm sure. I hear of it on other mmo's far too often. I hope for the sake of the child, as well as the family, that a lesson is learned here on both sides, and that it was actually a child and not an adult grandchild. What action they take should depend on the age of the child but on the other hand, I know I would not freely hand over my credit card to a child on the internet, even for one use, no matter how much I trust them. Sad yes, but common sense nonetheless. I wish them all luck in dealing with this and I hope it inspires other children to think twice before making a thoughtless decision that will haunt them the rest of their lives.

yeah in linage 2 i think some kid got murdered for somthing stupid like getting owned i pvp or somthing... i forgot

If this story gets published, more families will be conscious of this happening to them. With media coverage there is a chance someone might give free medical treatment to the grandfather.

Truely sickening, people usually turn out this way because they're allowed to however, I can imagine that he will not be punished in any way shape or form other than whatever punishment PWI has in store for his account.

If that were my kid, after i was through beating knots into his head, I'd turn my anger towards his computer and smash it into a billion tiny little pieces, after that I'd rip all the stuffing out of his matress and pillow, and replace it with the broken up computer pieces.... close the door behind me and put a padlock on it and set a 200 watt stereo speaker right up against his door blasting the lamest possible music i could possibly dig up. I would escort him to school the next day in handcuffs and on a leash, turning over the key and the end of the leash to his principal.

I hope your joking because as bad as this kid has F***** up already a crime doesnt justify another one and that which you are describing is child abuse regadless of how sick and idiotic this kid is having to take advantage of his grandma to buy pixels ><b:angryb:shocked

Alot of kids (but not all) loose morals when they get too ingrossed in a fantasy world where you dont see the money and the pple up in personal. I have a full time job and I know how much $1000 RL is worth, yet, I also understand that if you use online payments like paypal, spending the amount of $1000 in small increments are hard to grasp. All you need to do is click, click, click, and voila, payment is made and each time all you see is a payment of $50 was it in this game??

Im not trying to defend the young boy but with todays online payment system, and the brats inexperience in (and mostly probably anti-social) life, something like this was bound to happen. Its hard to blame the fault all on anybody here frankly. The only thing to hope for is that the boys parents will help pay for the bills, and that the adults will make the boy take responsibility either now or when he grows up to at least a part-time job-able age.

This is a sad story, but it is also sadly reflective of many issues that young gamers have yet to realise.

Gaming can be an addiction, but it is not a common problem. What makes cases like this become reality is the availability of money. Everyone -- not just kids -- has something they want. What makes people different from each other is how they manage their money, and this is where the distinction between adults and minors is clearer than anything. A young person can show maturity, but until they begin working and begin understanding what the value of money is, money is just a figure to them. When there's no attachment to the figure, there is no responsibility. Money, and in some cases life, is just a game to people.

What complicates the problem is the development of online transactions. Before the internet, the best a kid could do was pickpocket their parent's wallet. Now that many services charge via credit card, some parents trust their kids with their credit cards for apparently legitimate purposes. The problem is simple: you never give someone else your credit card. It's easy to point the finger and laugh, but some parents are naive enough to trust their kids with a responsibility they cannot comprehend. If kids want to pay for an online game, I'd hope they're working for it, and I'd hope the parents pay themselves instead of trusting their kid to do it. Sadly, parents tend to be clueless to the change in technology and the way things work in the 21st century, where the younger generation can adapt quicker to changes than their elders.

The issues shown in this case have many facets. Gaming addiction may be part of the problem, but the greater issue is how we entrust children with responsibilities they cannot yet understand -- and some that the elders cannot understand.

^That's exactly the sort of thinking that leads to incidents like this. If you "can't believe" this sort of thing could happen, you'd better believe it. This is what our kids will do if give them the chance.

OMG you have to be a completely heartless creep to steal money from an old woman with a sick husband, and even more so when its your own grandmother. I hope in the very least that the jerk gets banned, but he should probably seek some sort of counseling as well, anyone that repeatedly spends that much money for a game has got some problems, not to mention a serious lack of morals for stealing from a little old ladyb:angryb:angryb:angry

Unfortunately, things like this happen. It is just too sad that it was a grandson stealing from his grandparents. I can only hope his parents if they are around in his life, mets out the proper punishment. I am not sure if the credit/debit card company can press charges against him or not. If they can, I hope they do so.

The bank will do an investigation into the imporper use of her card and will most likely reverse the charges if she disputs them and refund her money and any bank charges she may have incured from this. I have dealt with many situations where a debit/credit card was used fradulantly and it is usually reversed. I hope that is what happens in this case.

On the flip side, it is so easy to get hooked on games so much, that like a poster above said, when you make a charge, it is $50.00 at a time. Over time, that can add up so fast. It has happened to me on a different game. When I went and looked and actually saw what I had charged to a game, I was so ashamed. I still to this day can not believe I spent that on a game. Big difference is that it was my money and I could afford it at the time, but that money could have went to other things. Live and learn, but make sure it is YOUR money you are playing with, not stolen money.

A lot of MMORPG companies would be ashamed to see such a scandal discovered and reported in the news. Thank you for having the compassion and courage to come out with the story yourselves, in hopes of preventing similar tragedies in the future.

To me, the saddest thing is the betrayal of trust. You know, I've been seeing people calling for crimnal charges, etc etc but the worst part of it, IMO is regardless of what happens and whether or not he "deserves" the punishment or not, whether the grandmother gets the money back or not, and even if she forgives him, the pain and sadness that she got the from the entire incident, not to mention the fact that she cannot trust her grandson anymore is perhaps, the worst part of it.

Stealing from others in such a way is not okay. PWE does want to grow which is only possible by getting money into the company but not through such ways! The GM's are humans too and do you really think they would have liked that done to their grandparents? Just put yourself in reverse position here what if it were you in the same position as the "old lady"? Getting betrayed like that from your own family hurts. It is not just the money but the lose of trust!
