Cryptic is becoming a Gearbox studio!

nitocris83nitocris83 Member, Cryptic Developer, Administrator Posts: 4,498 Cryptic Developer
Earlier this evening, it was announced that Cryptic would become a Gearbox studio. We are excited to share this news and have put together some initial FAQs.

Will Neverwinter be sunset when Cryptic becomes a Gearbox Studio?
There are no planned changes to the availability of our games in the foreseeable future. We are hard at work on continued development and remain committed to providing our players with the best experience possible.

How will this impact my account?
Player accounts will not be impacted as an immediate result of Cryptic joining the Gearbox family. If any account changes are planned in the future, they will be announced in advance along with details.

Will we still be using the Arc Launcher to access Neverwinter?
There are no plans to stop using the Arc Launcher for our existing titles at this time. Any changes will be announced in advance along with full details on how to continue accessing our live games.

It's a corporate takeover that's all it is. Can only hope gearbox will fix the mess cryptic caused.

Ah I think it's good. Rather it be under gearbox boderlands that focus on story, character and loot than perfect world that focus on microtransaction.

The question to ask is WHY Cryptic was sold to Gearbox.

Such changes usually are done because the sold company is struggling - meaning they have a product portefolio that does not cover their expenses. Companies are often bought to get access to technology and skilled employees, with no regards for failing products.

There has been signs for a long time that Cryptic is struggling. The player counts in their games are falling. The Magic Legends game was supposed to boost this, but it was cancelled.

They were not sold. Gearbox (or more specifically Embracer) have bought 100% of the shares of PWE, acquiring Cryptic as well

Please tell us this means we get better customer support lol

Why would it be? Nothing really changed except it is belong to Perfect World and it will be belong to Embracer. PWE is still PWE. PWE Publishing is still PWE Publishing. Cryptic is still Cryptic.

Edit: Nevermind, it's PWE that has been bought, Perfect World has been struggling.

that was what I was wondering if it was all of PW or just Cryptic. maybe this will mean less cool stuff locked behind a RNG

Doesn't sound like major new tbh. Just PWE getting rid of one of their Western assets. Official announcement says Neverwinter is highly profitable fwiw.

Honestly my hope is Gearbox wants the MMO management expertise at Cryptic to help develop a Borderlands MMO.

    That would something.

If it means that the absolute f-ton of issues that go outright ignored and unacknowledged in the game get dealt with then i don't care who owns them on the back-end.

Like.. oh I dunno.. fixing the missing option to turn Proc. text back on that IS STILL MISSING.

All the dungeon runs where I'm forced to manually check procs, causing group deaths and outright wipes are on YOU for not fixing it.

From what I've been able to find, this deal is good news for the game most likely.

As a PVP player, this is potentially a really big deal for us too.

This says NW has 400 million in revenue. Not sure if it is this year or all the years combined though (most likely, latter). No, it does not say what the profit was.

it dont suprise me tbh. look at the route its going, they leave a bug in the game then perma ban more then half the game players for something they knew about before they went live on ps4, yet they still blame the players for all of it, instead of just saying ok here is a 30 day ban, dont do it again, we lost alot of good players, just dont make since since this is a game thats free and yet depends on the players to buy.. smh.. hopefully good changes to come

I am sorry, I can't resist saying, I told you so. I think this was pretty much what I said would happen, when Magic failed and all the BIG names left the game. I am also not back either. Just here to wish the new Swedish team the very best of luck and I hope everyone here enjoys this new year of 2022. Maybe if GearBox brings back the Foundry ( I know... snowball + Hell ) I might consider it worth a look.

Meanwhile I am very busy opening loot boxes, I don't spend real money on, riding mounts I capture in the wild, handcrafting saddles in my workshop, making costumes, playing multiple musical instruments, and sailing to exotic lands on my personal ship.

    Have fun!
