  You just need to unequip it. That should solve your problem.

  Agreed. I think it needs to be in your inventory to upgrade. Now, you'll have to wait while you upgrade unless you have another armor set.

  It's OK, I have to work today anyway and it'll be another week before I refine enough black ice for the next piece and get another set of Unified Elements... so, it's a long haul, but the timing works out ok for me

  So, I upgraded my cap yesterday successfully, but one thing DID happen that shouldn't have. You'll note in my screenshot above that my cap was dyed with the Nightmare dye pack. Now, after the upgrade, it is now dyed with Searing Magma:

  I vaguely remember one of the devs (asterdahl maybe?) posting that the upgraded new gear would come with some pre-set dyes.

  hm, understandable I suppose. Easier than detecting the dye on the original and applying that dye to the new item I guess. WAY more lazy and unfriendly from a QoL perspective, but understandable, especially if they don't have any routines that can detect the metadata on the original items used in any projects across the board and write that data to new items being generated.
