The Poll options don't really cover it for me. Here's why I play:
- Combat: fast paced action, small number of abilities, active defensive mechanics
- Unique classes ( despite the fact we are all dps with some cc now )
- Visuals: small but pretty areas, sweet character design
- Last but not least I feel a bit nostalgic every time I pick up a Cryptic game because they made my first MMO - CoH/CoV
PS: I'm not an expert on D&D and I've played only a few tabletop campaigns but imo Neverwinter is D&D only in name
Row, row, row your boat, Gently down the stream.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, Life is but a dream.
Because it's D&D based.
I know very little to nothing about D&D. I tried D&D pathfinder a couple times, but found little interest in it; though the DM was actually really good about trying to get us involved.
Because it's casual.
I like this, if Id only played one character. But I spread too much around on alts. Some parts of the game are alt friendly and casual some are very not.
Because I like the storyline.
I really again dont know anything about D&D so storyline means very little to me. I like fighting dragons though... Id probably read a book if I wanted a story.
I like PvE part of this game.
I do truely like the PVE in this game. The action, non tab oriented combat I really like. When this game was new and things were difficult I liked it even more. I agree we need more challenging non RNG based content that rewards skill.
I like PvP part of this game.
Same as PVE. I like the action, non tab oriented combat. I really liked PVP up until mod 4/5. It wasnt really any mechanics or technicalities of PVP itself, it was just the PVP was shrinking and the people who were in the "PVP" guilds just acted like 10 year olds (maybe they are 10 idk). But Ill probably give PVP another try once mod6 rolls around, I just hope matchmaking is improved.
And I didnt vote.
Also there is very little in the MMORPG or MMO market Im interested in. The main reason I tried NW was because my old roommate got me into it (he knew D&D), the funny part is he found it so un D&D like he quit before he got a character to 60. And here I am with a 60 of each class.
because it has the best combat system in the best fantasy environment with the best graphics (old but still the best i can find) one can look for.
this means i play for pvp but i dont dislike having to do some pve to enjoy the enviroment this combat system is built around.

Because I tripped over a rock, got mauled by a bear, then Yoda appeared before me and told me about Neverwinter.
I like to do dungeons with my guildies or solo pve. Don't like pvp in any game. I wish there are castles for every guild and we can go in there sit and chat with each other. We should improve our castles and maybe do pvp castle battles ut castles shouldn't be for only war. Create your imagination.
I vote the missing option: Because it's a true action game that plays like no other in terms of UI, controls and the rest, for example the extreme limit on powers you can use, mouse steering and targeting and so on. More than just "not tab-targeting". The genre (fantasy), I.P. (D&D), and other options are mostly moot for me.

I have to add this to also controls. I like mouse and keyboard controls in this game. I played other games too but didn't like their camera and mouse controls.

Yes I like the combat system and general gameplay but what sold me is that it is Forgotten Realms. Our D&D setting was Faerun and I absolutely loved the lore and read most of the novels at the time, Elaine Cunningham and R.A. Salvatore being my favourite authors.
Our pain is self chosen.

I play for the FOUNDRY. Since you failed to include that on your poll, I chose "D&D based." A HUGE part of D&D IS making adventures for your friends to play, after all. The Foundry needs to be a major feature of this game, that is loved & supported by the dev team, not treated like the red-headed step child, or left in the attic locked in a trunk.
I play because of the foundry, like bardaaron.
It's the only game I know I can create adventures and design maps as easily and have others be able to play it right away.
It's the sole element that makes Neverwinter different from all trhe rest of the MMORPGs, and it baffles me how much that element is ignored.
let's hope it begins to change.
Because i wanna kill Drizzt with my Priestess of Lolth. But there is simply too many Drizzt in this game that i dunno which is real anymore. Anyway i like D&D world.
Edit : oh yea..and my priestess of Lolth cant even pray to lolth but selune only..probably there is a thick barrier call earth and rocks that is blocking her to commune with lolth

Pity one cannot play a Priestess of Lloth. Drizzt is one of my favourite characters in FR but hells I'm beginning to hate him purely because of the number of clones that exist in NW. Do people even realise what his name means in the drow tongue? Not like it's the John of the Drow language. NW should really have prevented people making characters with the same name as those that exist in FR lore.

There should be some "I just play - why di I need a reason?" option.
I started to play because it was supposed to be DnD based, still playing by inertia, there's nothing I can't vote for in your poll.
"I can not save you
I can't even save myself
Save yourself
So just save yourself"
Nice song - know it well!
On a side note, I much more prefer the World of Greyhawk setting over Forgotten Realms, but sadly that will never be seen again for a variety of reasons (corporate stuff).

There is no "because I haven't found anything with which to replace it yet" option. That's why I play. Maybe there should be two polls- why did you start playing, and what made you stay?
I started playing because of the foundry. When that turned out to be a massive disappointment, I stayed because it was (at the time) fun and shiny- and due to inertia. I like to have a game "on the go", and didn't have anything else demanding attention.
I am guessing that "inertia" would be the real answer for a lot of folks, if they were honest.

(I'd also say D&D but this is like 1 part D&D to 1,000 parts water.)

But serious, it's fun. The world is cool, the lore in nice and immersive. It really feels like a D&D world to me.
Plus it doesn't require me to sign on to a raid-like-it's-my-job style of play.
I have to add this to also controls. I like mouse and keyboard controls in this game. I played other games too but didn't like their camera and mouse controls.
Pretty much this.
