Top five iconic D&D monsters

edited November 2014 in General Discussion (PC)
I thought it would be fun if we made a list of some of our favorite D&D monsters that we would like to see in Neverwinter someday. I'd suggest we cap each of our lists at five entries otherwise these post cold become very long. Here is my list to get things started.

-Owlbear (As a mob and not a mount)
-Displacer Beast
-Otyugh
-Umber Hulk
-Purple Worm (Could make a great boss)

    Beholder.
    Orc.
    Goblin.
    Dragon Of Your Choice.
    Gelatinous Cube.

    Honorable Mention:
    The Almighty Flumph.
    We need Flumphs.
    We need them now.

Surprised we have not seen any Sahuagin, esp since they are right off the coast of Luskan. Of course they were overused and done in DDO.

I've been DMing the Forgotten Realms for over 20 years now. So, my list are creatures specifically iconic to the Realms, for the most part. These are creatures that I enjoy throwing at my players the most. Not that I pit them against them that often, but when I do, it has that iconic feel among the players.

    1) Tarrasque
    2) Hakeashar
    3) Phaerimm
    4) Sharn
    5) Render

From its lore, the Tarrasque can be in any campaign setting really. But it has a history in the Realms specifically.

I could go on but these are my top 5 favorites as a DM, not counting playable races like drow.

Yeah.. Owlbears are supposed to be deadly.

O/T.. I guess. I know this is F.R. and all.. but I always loved most the early straight up monsters. I mean, how beautiful is a colony of giant ants?

To be honest, I liked the few F.R. books I read.. I liked the Dragon Lance novels better. But Forgotten Realms in game play was sort of a turn off for me. It was about that time that we started playing GURPS and our own versions of D&D. And Traveler and ShadowRun, and Horseclans, and Gamma World. Had a huge Lankhmar setup too.

I once ran a campaign that involved reality-jumping.. and the party ended up in our meat-world neighborhood, modern times... and met us players. A kind of reverse Guardians of the Flame situation, though not inspired by that. More inspired by the Startrek movie (can't remember the name just now.. the save the whales one,) and Battlestar Galactica 80.

I think the Pocket Pet is meant to be an ode to Boo.

    mind flayers

There are so many mob types that D&D basically invented.

We have Mind Flayers and at least one Cube (as well as a Cube Mount).

    5. Tarrasque

    BooYa!

Although if people can slay Tiamat, a Tarrasque should be a piece o' pie.

Even Tiamat would have trouble taking on a Tarrasque, unless it goes to her home plane, which she is soon to be without - so her power will be diminished even though it is still incomprehensible to most mortals. Even then, she wouldn't be able to kill it permanently. Even dragons and the gods fear when a Tarrasque awakens from hibernation. Wish magic no longer exists, for now...
