A day in NWO - The view of an endgame player and guild leader

A day in Neverwinter when I have a day off:

9am: I log in for the first time, drinking my hot coffee, checking some prices in AH, logging through my alts farming leadership and praying. Quite relaxing and fun. Listening to music.

9:30am: checking the ZEN exchange, yeah, keeps growing. Always capped out for 25k zen. If something arrives, I open lockboxes and sell the stuff. Quite entertaining and profitable. But where is my coffee?

10am: I log to my pvp toon and start my actual gaming day with some pvp matches. Check friend list, not many there, I either solo or duo queue at this time. Have like 3-4 matches, all complete stompfests. My 18k HR is matched together with other high gs pvp toons against very inexpierienced players. Can tank enemy team by myself… boring. Each match I start afking after 3 mins, refining stuff and more Ah checking.

11am: I do some daylies in IWD, joining a guild member who tries since release of module 3 to gain her mainhand. She farms everyday several hours, but no. I shiver just imagining such grind. Open world pvp is deserted. People dont even do the dalies there anymore.

11:30am: I get a join request for guild. A fresh new CW is searching for a guild. Talking via TS, seems nice. He asks, how to build the CW right. I have to tell him, that I could give him a very good build but with mod4 everything about CW will be outdated. No use talking about a build right now, 3 weeks before release of new module. He is like "hmm, but I wanna learn how to play". Mhkay…

12am: Some guildies wanna run a T2. The new one too. But then we realize, DD chest is currently bugged. Running dungeons right now is not a good idea and maybe a waste of time. Mhkay…

12:15am: Another new player wants to join the guild. After TS communication we give it a try. He is interested in running gauntlgrym. Yeah, the chest you know… but gg pvp sounds fun, right? Ehm, we are Delzoun, even queuing at the pvpdoor can let u wait like 20 minute until queue pops. Mhkay…

Taking a break.

4pm: I log in hope getting maybe a nice premade match. Group formed, lets go! First match is really balanced and entertaining. We loose close. After that, we queue again, matched seven times always against pugs, complete stompfests. Afk time 80%. Dropping in leaderboard. Idc, but some of my guildies do. Mhkay…

7pm: some guildies discuss if it is worth getting the feywild package for real money. Cool unicorn mount, and some special enchantment… ehhm… yeah… its bugged I tell them. "For over a year????" … ehm, yeah. Mhkay…

7:30pm: Helping some guildies with CN to farm AD. The lags in this instance are literally killing us. If we hadnt run this dungeon couple hundret times we would have not beaten the draco. The run was still a pain in the ***

8:30pm: logging to one of my alts and browsing through the member list of my old guild. It had over 100 active players. Except for me and three others all of the members have left the game. Of 50% of them I know the reasons. They initially loved the game but left in frustration over not fixed bugs, missing and repetitive content, imbalances. I am in a sad mood. Mhkay…

After a break
10pm: logging in again, the new member from today told me how he get instakilled in pvp in 3 matches in a row. I tell him, better not to do pvp with only blue gear and maybe farming stuff and learnig the class via pve. Then I realize, stupid advice: runnig dungeons? Bugged! GG pvp, pve? unreliable! Professions maybe?? Ehm, no. Mhkay…

Logging to my newly specced pvp cw. Hes fresh, the char never touched pvp after ELO introduce. I solo queue (oh me stupid) and facing several partial premades but now I am on the other side. My team consists of fresh lvl60 chars, like this new guildi. Stompfests. Out of ten matches, I got 5 times a disconnect in my own team. Over two hours of gameplay, I stand 70% afk in spawn, makes no sense fighting with 4vs5 and three 8k gs players against full geared pvp toons. Mhkay…

Late in the night, I log through my leadership armee, listening to relaxing music.
I realized that day that except for the ONE balanced pvp match, the most fun of the game was to log through my chars while drinking coffee.
By writing this down I am asking myself, how can it come to a point where a clickfest browserlike feature as professions can be more entertaining than the actual game?

This is my honest question. I play since early beta, and from the very beginning of this game my motivation was mainly build on hope that things will improve, will get better. I actually remember the time before Gauntlgrym was released and many pvp players were excited about it. Finally some cool, dynamic content? Oh, how much did we get disappointed …
With every module it seems to get worse. And my constantly diing friendlist and the deserted guilds around me reflect that quite well.

To adress this to the long time players, how is your perception of the development of the game?

I feel like only a handful of unbelievable dedicated and endurable hardcore players can stand this culminating mess of bugs, imbalances, massive nerfs and changes and unfinished released content. The rest just leaves for good after a two or three months playing and realizing: it wont get better.

For over a year now, I always have defended NWO against some haters and doomsayers, even promoted it and encouraged others to start playing this game. But finally, my opinion has changed. I would have a bad feeling to tell anyone "Hey, lets start to play Neverwinter!" With the current state of the game, I can not say this anymore. Makes me sad :-(

Well i didn't read your novel but all i can say is wow you play from 9am to late night you should consider finding some other activities that involve going outside. Not trying to be mean but to spend more then 12hrs playing a game in a single day is a bit excessive, imho.

I read every word and can appreciate almost all of it. Except the pvp stuff. I don't know anything about that. For the last couple of months I just run the campaigns and dailies, do my profs., and continue development in case it somehow gets fun again to do something else in the game.
Yeah. I guess I got a problem. haha.

As for going outside? Wish I could. That would be awesome. Those of us who can, really should.

Maybe Cryptic is understaffed or has a lot of newer employees. They have several positions open on their primary webpage. Maybe there is a work ethic issue among some key employees.

Yes, there have been some bugs that have not been fixed for quite some time, but I have faith that things will work out in the end. At least for now. And all I really care about is PvE in the end . . . :)

I don't play PvP or as much as you do hours wise (I spend more time in the forums in these days I find and doing leadership / playing around in the AH then I do playing). This post has me thinking as well I see a lot of similarities between how I spend I my time and energy in NW these days as well. I honestly think I'd have left a while ago if I hadn't spent the thousands of dollars I have in this game which seems to be my reasoning to staying and spending 90% of my gaming time in it. I do however think after module 4 if things don't get better I'm going to have to take a break and pursue my "destiny"....

    LOL.

I go through the same routine as your 9AM.

Sadly, I can't stomach the rest as things are right now so it's pretty much just fast forward to the next day.

I like neverwinter because I like the campaign setting it is in. I like seeing Jarlaxle handlng out quests. I like the combat model, where action is good. But the imbalance/bugs kill me. I went on a strike for a long time without paying. Recent GF buffs let me to donate again, but I still feel the apathy from the game promotors. Bugs should not take this long to fix, especially simple ones (icespire mountaineer is a good example). There isn't even any communication.

Seems like a good thing the community manager could work on. Man, sometimes the simple things really matter. Yeah, it won't fix how TR's are in pve, or HR's dominating pvp, but it will show you care what the community thinks...

Didn't read all of it, but if you're interested in gauntlgrym pvp, being luskan is the only guarantee that you wont have to wait all day. Bugs are disappointing yeah, but the main problem I see with the game is that everything is just.. too easy to get. No motivation after reaching a certain point in game, my friends and I have been playing for about 4-5 months and already lost interest in pve.

Well written. I too start the day with toon praying, if we dont count the 5 min wait for the launcher to load because for some reason "my connection goes trough the worst hubs in the universe, and nobody can fix that". I wonder how MMOs with a 100x bigger player base deal with this...

I disagree on the PvP part, but mostly because I am a mid-geared player. I have some pvp gear, it's far from endgame, got some set bonuses, and 90% of PvP matches are fun for me. Maybe it's because I am the one doing most of the work. I Always end #1 in points, or close to it. I like the double/tripple chase which seems impossible to me atm, but that only makes the kill sweeter when I get either of those. The elo system is still fresh, give it time. GG lacks the ingame mechanics for a 20v20 match, this is the first time they stepped up from 5 man groups. You can't be significant in GG without an epic mount. You can only make a strong 5 man grp and use "king of the hill" strategy to overcome the mayhem that every big group with 0 or close to 0 communication.

I dont realy have the energy to adress the PvE issue right now, It's huge, I already wrote several times about it. I always try to see and support the company side because it's quite often that the player base is wrong, but this time I can't.

The main issue for me is the connection. Every day I hear about people having lag issues. Today I came back from 3 hard days of renovating my house. I wanted to make me a coffee and relax. In 1 hour I managed to do 3 sharandar dailies. All because my connection keeps dropping. The best part is the gateway works great, no issues there, while the game itself has a 2-3 sec delay. You can sell me "it's not us, it's somewhere in between" stories all you want. Most people aint buying it. I am starting to lean towards that too. I have no problem playing wow, lol, browser games with servers in US, they all homehow managed to fix the connection issues while you people are having tough times and blaming our ISP.

But I still continue to believe in this game. It's still very young, I'll give it time. Who knows, maybe one day, one thread like this one will make a difference. Right now this game survives on starving old blood. The events, the promo stuff, everything zen related is amaising. This is the first game on which I can say "money well spent". But the real content, the "completely free to play" stuff, it's dry as sand. And buggy to boot. Maybe if there was more time and effort spent on getting new players to the game than on less important things like gold seller crusades, we'd all have a better game to play.

    Mhkay...

Seriously though, I read through your entire post and enjoyed it!

I think little breaks here and there are good, ALTS also make the game somewhat new and fun again.

I have the best time doing events with guildys and pvp'ing - but yes, pvp can be harsh if you're on the wrong side, often time I am. :)

If I see the AH before and now I wouldn't say no bots = healthy economy, = no newbies who can't even hope to compete with said gits?, yea, like now more than ever, and better rewards for foundry and BoE instead of BoP because of no bots?, so this game was just making everything worse for everyone just for a 0.1% of ppl who bot?.

A game without bots would be perfect, yes. Too bad that is an illusion. You can try all you want, if bots want to get in, bots will find a way. This is not some theory, it's a fact. I am so certain of this I would put everything I own, including my life, on this bet without blinking. You can try all you want, it's like trying to empty a bucket with a fishing net. You know what gold sellers are doing now that keys are BoA? They sell low lvl accounts with keys on them. You buy the keys, get the boxes, open them, send your stuff to main, done. Not nearly as perfect as before, but it still works. This game is close to a bot heaven. So much stuff is sellable, the only hard thing is deciding what to grind. Instead of continuously bashing the sellers (and the community), what the designers should do is make stuff that cannot be botted. I aint trying to do your job here, but... Try to think. What can't an average bot do? Can he get faction reputation? Nope. Can we make a new enchanting system that would work similar to IWD rep? Yeah. Can we make current enchantments void for that purpose, and introduce a merchant that will give you peridots/black opals etc. In exchange? Yeah. And this was just off the top of my head. So tell me, is this not better then bashing your own community? It sure is one hell of a milestone.

This is so wrong in so many ways. Just making every endgame item BoP would fix half of the stuff you pointed out as "bot faults". Bots do it because the mechanics let them. It might seen a bit contradictory for me to talk about community bashing and then call for this, but one of my main beliefs in gaming is that endgame should be endgame, for players who are willing to put effort into having endgame gear and playing endgame content. When everyone can just ding 60 and order a full endgame set trough Tarmalune exspress, it's not realy endgame.

Good points in general, but I have to stop you right there. There is nothing, I repeat, nothing as important as keeping bots out of the game. It should have the same priority as bug fixing.

A bot-free game attracts new players on its own, the same way a bug free game does. Of course the game has to be worth playing in the first place. NW is definitely worth playing. Awesome game mechanics, good story, player-made adventures.. there's enough features to keep people playing for a long time.

No bots=healthy economy. Yes it can be ruined by other factors, but a bot-free game benefits everyone.
No bots=no overpowered gits complaining they have nothing to do and roflstomp over everything.
No bots=no newbies who can't even hope to compete with said gits if they need a HE drop.
No bots=no speedrunning and ridiculous GS requirements in the /LFG.
No bots=decent drop rates and decent foundry rewards for players.
No bots=chance that drops will finally be BoE again instead of BoP.
    Need I go on?

Spoken as someone who is already at the top of the food chain and doesn't want anyone else up there with him. Let me fill you in on some basic information that you seem to be missing. While they waste time focusing on bots...this is what's really going on.

No bots=healthy economy. Yes it can be ruined by other factors, but a bot-free game benefits everyone.
ROFL not even close. Players with literally hundreds of millions in AD ruin this economy. They control the AH and get richer for it.

No bots=no overpowered gits complaining they have nothing to do and roflstomp over everything.
You're kidding right? This game can not only be P2P, but it's definitely P2W. Any player can create an account. Spend 20 hours to get to lvl 60. Then spend $1,000 on zen to convert over to AD and get all the BIS gear they want. Anyone can go from zero to hero in under a day...

No bots=no newbies who can't even hope to compete with said gits.
Ya...cause being a new player and paying 10x more for everything now then when the bots where here is great. It will be so much fun spending years to grind up to where all the BIS players are at now after using these said bots...

No bots=decent drop rates and decent foundry rewards for players.
LOL...ya...right. How many times have drop rates been nerfed now? Each time they do it, it adds even more pressure to the ZAX as more players can't get items they want so they're forced to buy them out right due to frustration. Hmmm...I wonder if this benefit's players or the other guys more....

No bots=chance that drops will finally be BoE again instead of BoP.
    It wouldn't matter either way...

I've been playing this game for over 2 weeks, got my first char at level 60 in 5 days, but my second char is still level 20 because I don't want to go through all that questing again just to have some artifacts unlocked for having 2 chars at level 60 with 3 boons on them....I still don't even have 3 boons (Only 2 Sharandar/Dread) on my first char. I just mostly log in do some dungeon runs maybe I can get some good drops to sell to make some profit and buy an artifact from AH. I also sometimes do some PVP's but seeing as I haven't started making my PVP gear yet I don't really pvp that much because I'm waiting to unlock Icewind Dale and get my Corrupted Black Ice gear.

So yeah pretty much that's my daily routine when I login this game. I don't know what else to do; I tried doing Gauntlgrym but I found it boring both pve and pvp. I haven't tried the dungeon yet.

LOL its totally the player's fault for getting 20k gs now? If it is possible players will do it. No, the ones to blame here are the devs who made it possible to get a gear score that high in the first place.

Umm. How about player retention. A player free bot free game is a pretty empty place....

Sadly, in this game the bots actually kept the prices sane..... So now they have their bot free game but new players are so turned off by the prices they run for the hills.

OMG thank you so much for taking the time to write this thread. I used to play this game as a hardcore pvper, 8 t2 60s etc.. but quit because of all the issues you described. I was just surfing the interwebs and thought, what about NWO?? Maybe they fixed all the problems. I mean i really feel like the combat and class uniqueness is second to none. But its not worth it. Honestly i feel the biggest problem all these games have is the F2P aspect. F2P nets you the following:

*No barrier of access for hackers/bots, the game is free so if you get banned, make a new account. Ban IP? no worries we proxyed it anyways.
*Majority of company resources go to creating revenue. So bugs always take longer to fix, new content is shallower, designed to keep you playing with the minimal amount of design work, hence all the dailies. (i think this is called a Skinner box in psychology)

Bots utterly ruin games. Making the argument that people are turned off by the high prices is just a by-product of the bots, not an argument for them. Its so sad, i really want to try to warlock and ranger but its not worth it, everything else is terrible. But hey enjoy your game hope it all works out in the end.

    My typical day in NWO:

Log in at 10ish am, cycle through my toons to invoke and do professions. Log out after all that is done, in 15 mins. Go on the forum to read a little. Rise and repeat the next day.
He treats the game like an overtime job. Some people have serious addictions. If he took a break and stepped outside of this world for a moment, Im sure the game would be a little bit more enjoyable when he comes back

I have been taking a break for the past 3 months, coming back occasionally for CTAs and events, which btw were all very disappointing. If I continue my break, it most likely will become a permanent one. Mod 4 will be the deciding factor for me I guess.

I kinda feel the same way.
After completing all the campaigns the game just stops, the same as before every module.
After maxing out to lvl 60, only thing there was, was GG... nothing much.

That's why i suggested a mentor system and hope it will one day be implemented..
It's just another thing to hopefully keep maxed players a bit more busy with lower lvls.
Can read about it here: http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?720511-Suggestion-Mentor-system

Amen brother, and if you want to game 12 hours a day...that's for you to decide. LOL Yes, I still enjoy the game, but that's because I've been end game for over a year. My toons are geared. That being said, I watch new players and feel for them. It's getting more and more difficult to help them gear, play and understand an end game that is 100% money driven. It's an endless procession of dailies that literally never end, and with currency so broken I wonder how they compete at all. I can afford zen, but many cannot, and it's hard to watch all the players dwindle, guilds die out and solid players grow bored. :( The best part of the game was helping the newbs for me, but even I can't afford to help outfit them now. I still love the game, but the best part of the game for me (new players) is getting more and more straining. I know gaming, even free to play, is a business. But if you have no players, the money spenders will get bored too :(
