    As you can see a variety of methods used for the names. Some are names of Gods, some are references to movies, video games, or tv shows, and some are puns. Most of the dogs are named after dogs I have as pets down or did in the past.

    My toon named Holly Golightly has a cat named "cat" (from Breakfast at Tiffany's)
    Hawk types -"David" (from the gunslinger.)
    Panthers "Whisperdoom" (from another game)
    K-9 types - "Bongo" (no reason)
    Sylphs - "Pest" (obvious reasons)
    Fawns - "Sadbh" (from the Finn MacCool stories)
    Will O' Wisps - "Dancing Lights" (level 1 wizard spell)
    Sprite - "Sylph" (but then you came out with an actual Sylph and so thats just dumb now.)
    Green slime - "Avatar of Juiblex" (from another game)

    But those all kinda sux compaired to you'all's

    I has one of these.

    I have 11 characters, with many account-unlock companions, which I refuse to give duplicate names. That adds up to a lot of naming things. Most characters have loose themes for companion naming, some as simple as a unifying first letter (so Jinx, Jazz, Jeri, etc.). My D&D CRPG character has human and demihuman companions mostly named after Baldur's Gate characters. My two Berserk characters mostly have Berserk manga companions.

    When I started, I had some aspirations of loose themes for naming companion types, which means I have dire wolves named after authors of famous dog stories like Jack London and Albert Payson Terhune, orc wolves named Kipling and Akela, etc.

    The character with companions primarily starting with the letter H has a skeletal dog named Harryhausen. The other skeletal dog I've bound is named Medulla Ossium.

    Ioun Stones of Radiance mostly have names like Not An Exploit, Emergency Backup Stone, and Plan B Is Total Panic... only two of my characters didn't already have some kind of augment companion before this was released. Companion types that have annoyed me with their AI scripts tend to start getting named things like Combat Disadvantage and Aggie.

    Beau of Hazzard runs around with a dire wolf named Flash, a stone named Uncle Jesse, a mimic named General Lee, a fawn named Dixie, and a rotating cast of whatever I am levelling - Luke Duke, Daisy, Coy, Vance, Davenport, Emery, Waylon, Rosco... and currently a pig named Boss Hogg (of course it is).

    My DC has a Galeb Duhr named Rock Voisine. Her cat is named Party Cat from Nedroid's Picture Diaries, and most of her companions take naming inspiration from other Nedroid stuff as a result (Illusionist named Horrible Cereal Wizard). Somebody else got the cave bear named Beartato though.

    The other cats are Cat Rackham and Bagpuss, after a comic where the original site is offline and a children's TV show respectively.

    Some ioun stones are Kepler, Perihelion, Apogee.
    Honey badger is Brock Blueheart (from Fables comic).
    One Helmite ghost is Captain Daniel Gregg.
    Some fawns are Sika and Dvallin. One pig is Zhu Bajie.

    Names is tough.

    On my HR all of his companions are Gods and Exarchs of different deities.
    For instance my Ioun Stone is Lord Ao since he was the most powerful of the companions. My tomb spider is Lolth. My Owl is Mielikki. My Lillend is Qotal. Etc.

    However, there's a fair lack of deities for chickens or deities who believe/make chickens holy...
    So I got creative.

    Chicken: Iyachtu Xvim
    My excuse is that while people believe Bane consumed him completely he tucked a portion of his divinity in a chicken. He's now an evil fire breathing chicken that spreads fear, hatred and strife throughout the world and wants nothing more than world domination.

    Cockatrice: Talona
    Well, it has talons doesn't it? And it petrifies with it's bite, right? Isn't that a disease of sorts? I think Talona, the Lady of Poison, Mistress of Disease, and Mother of All Plagues would be proud to have a cockatrice work in her name. Although I guess it could take a few lessons in subtlety.

    If I had a chicken, I'd name it Sword Coast Bucket. However, I got a cockatrice, so I named it Petri Bawk.
