As far as i know, you can only get up to one Thayan Cipher per day from the Daily Lair Quest (in the end chest) given by Sgt Knox.
As for obtaining them through treasure troves from the AH, I'm not sure if that gives extra Thayan Ciphers as well as whether they're working as intended or not.
the way the dread ring campaign system works is you get one cipher a day from sergeant knox and if you are opening additional chests, you won't get additional ones. i would also suggest that anyone purchasing treasure troves from the AH, this is not an intended function of those items although you should also know that you can purchase a key to open additional chests per day for 1 gold, 5k AD and 10 thayan scrips. those troves sell for much more than that on the AH.
buyer beware.

Sweet merciful... people are charging that much?... holy... better off buying the relic fragments....
Or fork over a little more for antiquities and get yourself some bonus gauntlets too.
Yeah, of course it makes sense that you still only get one cipher per day. I *knew* that you could only get one if you ran the lairs multiple times, but it hadn't occured to me that the same would happen if you bought somebody else's trove. Seems so blinking obvious now, lol.
It is confusing... is the cipher given by Sgt Knox as a quest reward or from the treasure trove or both....?
The legitimate way is such that Sgt Knox will give you a random lair quest, which you will then complete and unlock the end reward chest where the (lair name) Treasure Trove is contained inside, which seems to automatically open when you accept the chest reward.
As for how to extract the Treasure Trove as an item to put it on the AH and whether it contains any more Thayan Cipher inside other than the daily, I'm uncertain.
yes, that tool tip from the wiki is correct for the way the campaign is intended. but as i stated, treasure troves are not meant to be accessible as a separate item. if you look at their separate tool tip on the AH, it only shows that you'll receive 3 vanguard scrips.
So those treasure troves on AH are from extra keys? Since the trove with the cipher in it opens automatically when you retrieve it when you do the lair quest...

No , there's a way to get them into your inventory without them opening automatically every time but it is not intended to work that way so I won't explain how here and I am pretty sure moderator Melodywhr already made the GM's aware of this issue so hopefully it'll be fixed soon, plus if people want extra Troves it is much cheaper to just buy the key and take 5 minutes to run a lair than to spend 40-50k on a unopened trove from the AH

Been wondering about this, I started accumulating them as items which was odd but handy as I could transfer/sell them. I assumed because I had completely finished the Dread Ring campaign this was why I got them as an item, which quite frankly would have been a brilliant implementation, allowing the character that had done it all not to end up with a million and one of each item and simply help out an alt to (with further brilliance) ease the monotony of re-doing the whole campaign on another character.
This IS how you meant to bring this in, right?
Seriously though, this is how it should be.

There are 2 types of treasure troves on the AH some only give 3 scrip and some also give the cipher. You have to look closely at the tooltip before buying.

From what I understand, buying a key allows you to access the chest again but you won't get another cypher with it, just the other things that drop.
This is my experience as well.

This post deserves a like..I never noticed this until u said it
Being able to put the troves on the AH is an oversight, at best, an exploit at worst. Its not intended. And those glitching the mechanics in order to bypass the automatic opening, do so with risk. Those buying them off the AH should do so fully aware of this fact.
Lets not forget what happened to those who found a way to speed up earning boons in Sharandar via the Arcane Reservoir.

Yep, the relevance of this to the Sharandar incident is exactly why I think that the Treasure Troves on AH serve as a form of exploit.

Ummm. If they did do something, why didn't they stop the 24/7 365 waves of exploiters that go on til this day there?
Been months and months and months...
Did you really think anyone could steal the power of the god of thieves?
That's a different issue. What you see now are people repeatedly looting skill nodes. The other issue was quest sharing, which is now impossible on any of the Sharandar quests. Annoyingly enough, if you're in a party and try to select an active quest it accuses you of trying to share it.

Dread Ring campaign currently lacks an alternative way to acquire Thayan Cipher, while Sharandar campaign offers an alternative way to acquire Feywild Spark.
The thing with quest sharing in Sharandar. It was done doing nothing but what the game allowed. Unlike this trove glitch where you have to do "something" to prevent the troves from being automatically opened on pickup. All anyone had to do in Sharandar, was share a quest. Using perfectly legit mechanics to do so. And it still resulted in mass bannings.
In many ways, this newest trick is far worse. And I don't expect it will continue to be overlooked for much longer. Nor do I expect the largest offenders to come out unscathed.
One thing to consider.. maybe when the DR dailies are no longer the current new hawtness, there may be an additional method to gain cyphers on the horizon- something like the Celestial Coin boxes for Shar sparks..?

Yeah, I forgot that there is the third way to acquire Feywild Spark. It would be good if Dread Ring has similar alternative ways in the future.

A surprising number of quite experienced players do, and then kick themselves!
I know that my HR has been buying Feywild Spark boxes every six days since birth, just to speed things up a bit. Only yesterday did I remind someone that their alt could have been shortcutting the process for a while, doh

I suspect that had something to do with the other 'big' thing that happened on launch day, and the fact that there wasn't an easy solution for it. No real way to separate those who got Nightmares without knowing the bug vs those who set out to take advantage of it. Server rollback on launch day for mod 1 would be a disaster. Plus that all those keys cost Zen. Then a group comes along that does something else and they get slapped down hard.

Hear hear. I'm about 1/3 through my DR 'thermometer' with my first 60, and I have to say, as fun and excitingly intricate as it is, I can NOT see myself schlepping my alts through this again. Not even one, super-favourite-groovy alt, and I've got one of each class. Jezuuuuu, what a grind! It all boils down to The Notorious Cipher Bottleneck, which I could actually live with if there was a way to pass the pain on from my main to my alts. As, in fact, one does with many systems and experiences in an MMORPG.
Please consider it (or at least maybe make a box of Ciphers prayable, a la the Sparks!

Wow, so you might actually have to get your boons as intended. How, absolutely horrible for you.
And what makes you think this was not the alternate way cryptic intended to add
