So, I registered for Neverwinter a long time ago, then took a break and recently came back to playing it. Just reached level 60 on my wizard, and... Well, thread title: Am I doing something horrendously wrong, or is this game just not for me.
See, there's some serious problems. Or things that seem to me like problems. I'm not stronger at level 60 than I was at level 1; in fact, quite the opposite. Level 1 characters can hack and bash their way through an encounter and come out with some light wounding. At level 60, unless I am absolutely flawless with my timing and use of abilities, almost every encounter costs me a health potion. That's assuming I survive at all. Going into skirmishes and dungeons, it seems like you might as well simplify things so that players have 2 hitpoints instead of twenty thousand, because that's about how many hits it takes to kill me. But you can dodge! ... As long as there are not so many instant death zones layered on the ground that there is literally no where to stand. And you can only dodge once or twice. Then you're boned, because you have no stamina and enemies are much better at attacking on the move than you are. (That's assuming you're not fighting the delightful ones that can jump around without being limited by stamina like you are, or the ranged units that have absolutely zero chance of missing).
It's like Cryptic tried to design an action game that is all about reflexes and dodging stuff and punishing you heavily for being stationary, then they crippled your ability to actually dodge or use mobile attacks, resulting in high level gameplay where you are forced to dump all your coin into health potions and chug them CONSTANTLY as a kind of "play time tax" I guess?
It also doesn't help that companions are just about completely freaking useless. They get slaughtered at level 60 because they are badly under leveled and haven't got the stats or equipment to be relevant. 95% of the pets I see people using are the Stone for the stat bonuses, or the Cleric. Not because she keeps you alive DURING the fight. No. She dies instantly on enemy contact. She just saves you healing potions between fights if you survive.
Maybe my equipment is just terrible? So I go to look at getting better equipment. And then I get get kicked out the party because I'm not l33t enough to be able to run it in my sleep like the people that have obviously played it a thousand times... Or it's a whole party of normal people like myself, so we get to the boss and everybody just gives up after 15 minutes of failure because the game's combat has such a high BS coefficient. You can buy stuff off the auction house, which I did some of, but that just feels stupid. I didn't earn any of that gear. Other people earn it and I just get to rummage through their trash bin.
Compounding all of these: It costs money or crazy amounts of grind to respec and almost nothing is actually explained by the descriptions. Good thing you were omniscient while leveling up and that Cryptic never broke any features or changed them in fundamental ways eh? So, experimentation isn't a thing. You fumble around trying to figure out what guides and walkthroughs still apply to the current iteration of the game, then spend your points and pray to your god of choice, and if you make mistakes: well, too bad, now you're stuck with it.
Sigh.
Sorry, kind of rambled there. I'm really frustrated by a lot of things in this game and I'm seriously questioning whether it's worth bothering. Or even what sort of "it" I should be striving for.
Lower levels are to introduce you into the game and teach you the mechanics. Also with less play options and skills at the lower levels it would be a bit silly to turn it into a button mashing mess.
Health Potions are cheap and really just become a part of the fight rotation. Hit, hit, hit, potion, dodge, hit etc...
Armour is also a good investment.
And what would the fun be if it was easy as for instance below lv 40 - pith - would be hardly worth playing.
More fun in close calls and pulling off the big hits and wins.

My CW is only level 35, so I can't fully comment. I've mostly used the Swashbuckler companion though, & it's been quite effective tanking for me since I got it, some 20 levels ago.
But as for group action, or my own personal effectiveness ... well, I don't have issues on either my 35 CW, or my 60 TR, but neither of them is a level 60 CW, so I can't really say. I definitely agree with the OP on all those insane AOE zones everywhere -- especially on my TR, they're quite aggravating, especially when they're coming from multiple directions such that no matter where I dodge I roll from one into another -- but I've learned to grit my teeth & deal with them.
One thing I can say is that on either of my characters, I have a lot more fun in groups than I do soloing, & this is the first MMO I've ever played in which playing my character the way I want gets me the results I want, so I'll keep playing until that's no longer true.

Unfortunately, a fresh LvL 60 is in a truly terrible position in this game if you like Group content. Your only real options are:
1) Find a good group that is willing to either carry you or endure the miseries of the Learning Process at your side or
2) Do the Solo Content over and over and over and over again until you build up enough power, gear, skills, and resources to match the power of your Pug, buying what you need on the A.H. with the A.D. you ground out Solo.
The other think I noticed was the Class you chose.
The Control Wizard is both extremely squishy AND requires the most skill and experience in the game to play well (it is also arguably the most powerful class in the game in the hands of a truly skilled player). Sounds to me like you would be happier with one of the Melee classes, a GF or GWF. Both are easy to play Solo and, at least GWF's are always welcome in Dungeons and GF's get into PvP matches CRAZY quick. Just be aware that GF's will generally be slow to play and advance for the first 50 or so LvLs until you pack on some Power, then they get a lot more interesting. They are also about to get a REALLY nice buff in the up and coming PvP Patch.

I have a Lvl 60 CW, a month old. It can be tricky, you can die really fast if you're not paying attention. On the same note though, it is very powerful. All I have is T1 Pvp set and some stuff I dropped doing the campaigns. If I pay attention and use my rotation properly I can quite easily obliterate anything in PvE straight away without a dent.
I do agree that there should be a free respec when you hit 60. I have re-speced 3 times before finding peace of mind and the first run was very far from perfect.
P.S. CWs have 3 dodges and DPS. My cleric with his 2 dodges and low DPS had much worse time, compensated by being able to get into dungeons fairly easily. My GWF had a very easy time but now sits on the bench waiting for the changes to come.
2 Advice:
- try also different classes if you didn't
- get on the preview server and try the free re-specs there, it's possible your build isn't optimal and giving you headaches

Not sure this really adds anything to what's already been said, but..
I think of reaching level 60 as sort of a second birth, and you get to level up again. Only, you are not gaining experience levels, you are collecting boons, optimizing your build specifics and getting the gear best suited to what you want to do. If not for that, one might as well quit playing the minute you reach level 60, or create an alt and do it all again with a different sound and light show.
Yeah there are the epic dungeons. And a group of experienced and well built/geared players can usually carry a new level 60 player to help him or her build up. There are a ton of ways to get your character viable for dungeoning using the Sharandar and Dread Ring zones, and PvP. Hopefully you will have been working on your crafting all along, and that will help a lot too, with AD generation. I nearly meet or exceed my daily AD refining quota on all of my chars (I have at least one of each class) every day just from leadership tasks and invoking. Toss in some dailies and the salvage of the fairly steady stream of bound purple junk and I almost always have AD waiting to be refined.
There is nothing wrong with the class you chose. CW's are probably the easiest to profit with. Check out the guides for the CW in the class forums, and look at other posts relevant to your class and to gaining assets in general.
And don't forget to get the companions who offer the best active bonuses for your char.

Fresh 60, first character, so, fresh to Epic dungeons as well? You would be better suited to work on Sharandar and Dread Ring to get stronger (via Boons) and better equipped (some nice blue and basic purple) while also building up your skill level before you try running a dungeon delve with PUGs.
Running a DD with friends or a quality guild is a much better experience.
1st: buy at least a decent blue gear at the AH, don't keep your greens a second after hitting 60. You can get a full blue equip for a day's worth in Invoking (2k AD is more than enough).
2nd: do the dailies in Sharandar and Dread Ring. In just a few days (under a week) you can get the 1st and 2nd boon (extra 500 skill points each), and some purple pieces of equipment. Also, you usually find some stuff to sell on AH and buy some more purple equipment. Always do the lairs in a party, it seldom takes more than 2 minutes to find one.
3rd: depending on your class, a cleric companion, even the basic one, can be of invaluable help, he won't keep you always up but chances are you will use far fewer potions between encounters. Also, depending on your class, some regeneration/life steal can help a lot. With a full Thayan tier1 gear (lots of life steal), i rarely ever use potions with my CW.
4th: farm some unicorn seals during DD in an easy dungeon (cloak tower takes 15 minutes, has easiest bosses ever), it's worth more purple equip. Not the best one, but better than blue. Also, you can get some purple drops to refine for AD.

First day I hit lvl 60 I had no clue what to do..
I had some friendly people give me advice, basically go see SGT Knox, do the sharander and Dread Ring campains for a couple of weeks, do the easy skirmishes during skirmish hour like master of the hunt and dread ring.. you dont need to have Gear Score for those, most of the time during the hours poeple with much higher gear score are in there for quick astral diamonds, so you really dont have to do much at all, just stay alive.
For about 10k astral diamonds any class can gear themselves in all blues other then pants/shirt, but for about 15k you can even get those into blues. This will be enough to run CT and CC in after you upgrade, get a couple of boons. As soon as you can get whatever the best LVL 60 epic Main slot device you can, most of the time this will be around 10k astral diamonds to 20k .
Even playing 1-2 hours a day max this is all achievable by every person in game in a couple of weeks, then you will do the slower grind of getting your t1 epic set, increasing the enchants up (getting them to even r6 is a pain in the but really!) and working on artifacts, finishing the boons out and working towards t2.
One of the biggest issues with neverwinter is the grind to 60 is the easiest Ive ever seen in any MMO, you learn nothing really.
Follow the advice above, it gets easier, dont worry about the elitist, Ive run into them myself My main is a DC, my alt is a CW, Ive seen people advertising for 15k GS DC please.. WTH is with that!
Make the game fun, dont let others ruin it.. Its also no fun to hit a Dungeon to find barely above the gear score peeps that queued in, you just wont help much, but you can get to around 12k gear score within 2 months including getting all the boons pretty easily, it slows down after that, because of the enchant grind, but thats ok, thats enough to run everything up to the newest 2.5s and maybe some end bosses in the t2s, but its enough to start with. PVP wise, it sux queuing up and going against premades in the 15k range, but alas.. it is what it is. I ran into what must have been of a beast of a Cw this morning, He was taking on a GWF and my DC with barely any damage, his lifesteal mustve been through the roof, never took him down before his team arrived.
Ive spent 10 bucks in game so I could get my Stone when it was on sale a few weeks back, getting a augment companion is nice , they do not die, nor pull aggro and give you direct stats. Other then that I have spent any other money to get any gear, so the above is doable for free, you will have to dish out some money to get a superior bag/mount/companion (or earn tons of AD to get them, which isnt always feasible for people who cant play all day long.)
As a gwf, I have no idea what your talking about. I might of been lucky, but Im a PvE focused set-up, and I still did pvp at 7.5k-8k GS and still owned and got 1-3rd place. Maybe your in the wrong class for your liking. Even on my other alt's, I never really had the problem of using potions. Esp. as a Gwf where I pop unstoppable or use my temporary blood skull raven crystal (pvp artifact) and im back to full health and good to go. I am currently at 10.9k GS with hardly any boons and 6 T1 purple's and as an example I do Tower of Celadine and never use a single pot till I reach the boss (I mostly use 1 pot for that, but sometimes none at all.)

One piece of advice if nobody has already given it - either join a guild or get a couple of other guildless people to help you make a guild so you get access to the T1 Gauntelgrym dungeon , spam it until you have the full Gauntelgrym T2 gear set and weapon , they are not the best in game by any means but they are super easy to get and they should be enough to help you on your way to better gear ,plus as a bonus you will be able to keep and use the T2 GG set when the upcoming PvP changes are patched onto live (if you PvP ) even if you only pvp enough until you can buy the pvp artifact it is a boost to your character, double win!.

You need regeneration, then you don't have to swill potions between encounters. Life steal is also excellent on CWs because you do huge damage, but it's also easier to gear for without specifically trying. Make sure you take the regen boon in Dread Ring, and maybe while you're looking for blue gear, seek out a few items "of Youth". It will help. If your artifact is Waters, work on ranking it up for regen as well.
I personally don't like using a cleric companion with my CW, as I find her health perfectly self-sustaining (and she's honestly in what people would consider scrub gear), but she can use a little help with distracting the monsters that don't die to her initial rotation. Swashbuckler and Frost Mimic are both good choices from recent events, thus readily available on the AH. If these are still out of reach, go ahead and grab a Man-At-Arms or Shieldmaiden for two gold. Give your choice of companion defense, HP, and life steal to keep it alive as long as possible. Regen can be a decent stat on pets as well.
I'd echo the advice about trying skills on the preview shard so that you can see what you like using without committing or putting any funds towards a build that might not work for you.
As for general CW gameplay, most encounters while playing solo can be approached such that you take little damage, except during lair boss fights. A single Shard of the Endless Avalanche will wipe out weak mobs, while you cackle to yourself about bowling for powries. You can learn more from the build threads by Grimah and Stox on these forums.
A final piece of advice is to get yourself an epic quality weapon ASAP, as the higher base damage will make more difference for you than any other single piece of gear. Either hope you get the orb drop from Phantasmal Fortress, or just buy a Burning Shard of Elemental Fire for under 10k AD (salvage value of this item, readily available).
this game is really easy, you just need to know what to do
look at some guides for correct spec in CW forums, check what stats u need, its usually 20~24% armor pen, then crit+recovery+power amd i would suggest getting some 9%+ life steal(easy with boons and what not)
you can find a good set of blue gear for a few k ad(i think i got my tr to 10k+ gs with just blue gear) there are 2 tiers of lvl 60 blue gear they have different stat value so dont get the low ones
get rank 5 or rank 6 enchants they are cheap enough as long as you do dailies and stuff. if you lvled post mod2 then you should have at least rank 5s built up from lvling
get 5 white pets for 2g each - they only give 25 pts of stats, but its better than nothing, and start saving for stone
join guild and run gauntlgrym pve part, easy and gg set isnt bad
find a good guild, there should be enough guilds that have good enough players to run any content and who are willing to help new members get gear(as long as said members are working for it and trying to improve their skills and be valuable members of the guild).
cw is really easy to play, you stand safely out of harms way and have ton of cc and 3 dodges, but you do need to think a few steps ahead when playing cw. if you dodge dont just run away, reposition so you can get more targets in range of your aoe skills, try hitting enemies before they can move/hit you. learn skill cast times so you can knock them down just before they hit you
Also depends on what spec you are as a cw. I have 2 level 60 CW's. 1 is a firemage and the other a storm one. My storm CW hardly ever gets hurt and destroys things very fast. He is built for damage and has a 11.2k gear score. I am decked out in purple gear from pvp and dread spire and the fey zone.
My fire mage is a lot weaker, kills things much slower. He has a 9.8k gs atm but is getting better gear each day.
Best thing to do is grind out Dread spire until you are fully decked out and look for dungeon groups or join a guild.

reaching level 60, you have gear sets to find and boons to earn. the social aspect of the game can help with that but if you're a solo player, you may have problems since running the dungeons to get great loot requires a group of five. and hopefully, a group of five friendly players.
joining a guild could help you but if it's not your cup of tea, then there are other avenues for you like joining a public custom chat channel.
lots of other good advice in this thread though. CWs are definitely squishy as their armor is made from cloth. if you stand in the red, your HP will be drained. you might be able to alleviate some of that by stacking regen but it's not a cure all. good dodging skills are definitely a requirement.
as a cw you need to move (cw are most known for that silly walk). do encounter or even 2 then move,move, move, never stand still.only dodge if you get caught in red.
more you move more u will avoid red without a dodge.aim for 25hp atlest with 1,5dmg resist easy to get makes huge difference.
I returned to the game a few months ago and leveled a CW, since then I've not played much, though I'm leveling a HR slowly by invoking the gods.
My build was and still is/could be considered rubbish, but my process of gearing after she hit 60 was rather short, I did not do the Sharandar missions. Gear up with anything that rises your GS to run T1 dungeons. T1 pugs are not picky. Target the 2 easiest T1 dungeon that can get you a 2 piece of a full set for the GS bonus. Coupled with any purple drops the interim bosses may drop, get your GS to over 9k minimum before pugging T2 dungeons. Again target the 2 easiest dungeon to get 2 piece of a T2 set, preferably not the same equipment slots as your T1 2 piece set. Aim for High Vizier 4 piece armor set first.
It took me several tries of each dungeon to get a full set of High Vizier. But the set's regeneration stats has since allowed me to get through any solo content (Sharandar Dread Vault) other than dungeons without the need for using potions.

I have to ask the OP, is this your first MMORPG? All mmorpgs start out easy, and get only more difficult and frustrating at higher levels.

A few general rules I follow upon reaching level 60:
1. Go to the AH and buy good quality blue gear - it's dirt cheap and really helps you get a foot in the door. If you feel the need to slot enchantments in this gear, only use rank 4's or lower. Save your better enchantments for later. You can usually fully gear up in blues for under 1000 ADs.
2. As a CW, I recommend you keep 2 companions ready to go - the cleric or a healer to reduce downtime, and a tank for actual fights. In regular PvE, while soloing, use the tank during fights, and switch to the cleric between them to heal you back up. The tank should survive at least long enough for you to clear some of the weaker enemies, so you can then focus on dodging and clearing the stronger enemies.
3. Start on the 2 campaigns. The early boons should be obtainable quickly enough, and can really help.
4. In addition to the 3 daily quests from Shadowmantle, there's also the instance. You get 1 free key into one of the instances, and they can give you purple gear to get you started off right.
5. Depending upon how many ADs you have saved up, you may be able to purchase some purple gear straight away. Prioritize what you buy, and also be sure to check your wealth tab for unicorn or drake seals - you may have enough to get some gear that way.

It's cheap enough to remove enchantments now that I don't see any reason not to use the best you've got. This was good advice back when unslotting cost huge amounts of ADs, but not so much now that it's a pittance of gold (1.5 to remove any enchantment from a level 60 blue item). Unless you don't have huge amounts of gold just lying around from buying too many potions, I guess.
As a relatively fresh lvl 60 CW, here's what i did when i first hit 60:
- Spent some AD on the AH to get blue gears (about 100AD each). Stats i aimed for are power, crit, armor penetration, recovery. My belief is that the faster the monsters die, the faster the encounters will go, then the less mistakes i will make (in terms of dodging). Remember that there are a few tiers of blue gear, just be diligent and search through the AH to find the higher tier blue gears with better stats (about 100 more stat points).
- Spent moar AD to get rank 4 enchantments (or used those that i had saved up, ~300AD each). I simply put dark rank 4 enchantments in all offense slots to get as close to 2.5k armor penetration as possible.
- Spent moar AD to get lv 55 blue shirt n pants with no gem slots (about 2k each). More stats for me = more damage = mobs die faster = less chance of mistakes.
- Got myself a cleric to save pots. Leveled her up to 15. I did not give her any items/runes at all (and still didn't right now), and from my experience she seldom dies, apart from some silly AI pathing at times that causes her to run into mobs. But whatever the case is, i just summon and forget. If she aggros other mobs, i ignored her and let her die, while i run away to safety.
- Switched up my skills to the hard hitting ones to kill the mobs fast. I'm thaum specced, so i used Conduit of Ice on tab, Sudden Storm, Steal Time and Shard of Avalanche. It's a pretty standard suite as outlined in the various CW guides in the CW forum. Some suggest Chill Strike on tab which is good as well, but i prefer to 1/2 hit mobs with CoI+Shard. Usually, the trash would be gone and the elite moves towards u. So i follow up with ST to stun, and SS to hit him hard again. Then comes the cha-cha dance if he's still alive. Repeat ad-nauseum.
- Regarding dodging, where possible i will walk out of reds instead of teleport. I will only teleport when i'm caught casting a spell halfway. This saves your stamina for more oh-5h1t moments.
- Joined a guild. My opinion is that whichever guild that is willing to take you in, is probably friendly to newbies/undergeared people. Run dungeons together with them, starting with CT or CC to get familiar with boss situations. Listen to them as to what needs to be done, as CW has a wide range of utility powers that can be useful in certain situations. Pushing mobs off ledges, Singularity on top of the tank/boss, stack chills (Icy terrain + CoI + RoF), or just focus dps on the boss (RoE).
- Get used to dying in dungeons. It is just simply harder compared to open world content. Be friendly with the clerics, and stay in their blue circles. Kite the adds within the circles if possible. Be prepared to burn through pots, though I feel that is largely a factor of how good your group is. A weaker group will require a lot more pots, as the mobs die slower = more mistakes = more pots. If the group is strong, sometimes i don't need to pot at all.
- Join the NW Legit Channel: http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?517081-NW_Legit_Community-celebrates-over-400-members Basically a user-created chat channel in the game that consists of nice/pro people that plays the game without using glitches. They are willing to bring new people (like me) to dungeons for their first time, without questioning your gear score or whether you have a stone etc. Just bring a good attitude to learn, follow, and ask if in doubt.
- Save up whatever unicorn/drake seals and gauntlygrym coins, and buy suitable upgrades for your blues. Though from my perspective random purples tend to have a even balance of defensive and offensive stats (like 200 defensive points and 200 offensive points), so i usually stick with my blues because i can get more offense (like 300 points) out of them. If it helps with your survivability, by all means go for the purples.
- I really saved up for a ioun stone of allure. I salvaged/sold everything i had: enchants, RP stones, greater marks, blue gear, anything that was of value was sold. Now that the zen is cheap, u will need about 400k AD to buy 1200 zen from the exchange and buy your stone. The stone for me was a DPS boost in dungeons, more stats more damage. But you can go defensive as well, and stack defense/regen/life steal. I still stick to the cleric for soloing to save pots.
- I bought a lesser plague fire enchant as well to debuff for the party. Anything that helps the party helps you as well.
I'm still wearing blue gear(all jewelry/waist/head/chest), and managed to farm only 2 T2 parts, with only rank 5 enchants, so i'm not pro in any sense. But I hope my experiences can help you in some way.

I have a toons of each class and not all of them play the same... My first toon and my primary one is a lvl60 CW (Executioner). He is equipped with T1 PVP set and the T2 weapon of the Gaultrym item set. With some other item and with mostly lvl7 gems my GS is 12k. Even with that i have to move a lot because it's not built to stay still. If i compared it with my lvl60 GWF (mostly blue gear, purple sword, lvl5-6 gems) my GWF can take pounding and be alive in a close quarter fight because it's designed for that.
In all the game i played (MMO and solo) if i can chose a mage (wizard), i chose that even if in almost all of them they are squishy thing that die easily in close combat. If you want something that does not need to move like crazy you need to chose a tank class like the GWF and GF. The Rogue, Hunter and Cleric class are in between but still require more movement than a GWF or a GF.
If you can get a few good companion they can also help with their active bonus and do not forget about the artifact. The bloodcrystal raven skull and the water of elah'zad artifact can heal you a lot and give some good bonus.
Gauntelgrym dungeon , spam it until you have the full Gauntelgrym T2 gear set and weapon , they are not the best in game by any means but they are super easy to get

Also, ppl suggest that the OP should farm Sharandar and Dread ring. Did they ever read what he said? He said he's already having a hard time facing one group of mobs. Because squishy and quickly out of dodges and not powerful enough yet to just wipe everything with one AOE. What do you think will happen to him in Sharandar and Dread ring? These areas are packed with mobs. You start fighting one group, you move a little, you dodge, and here another group detects you and now you're fighting ten mobs at a time. The OP will die there.
I would suggest exactly the opposite. First go to not-to-hostile foundries (Bill tavern maybe) and fight the foes one group at a time, until you have found the rotation that suits you, until you know which foe of the group you have to get rid of first, until you have found which companion helps you most, until you know when to use your artifact.

Yep, chances are you will draw a lot of aggro (there is a 3 point feat that can help with that), so unless there are few targets you feel confident you can keep under control, move a lot. Since you can't dodge as much as a GWF or HR, try to avoid small areas by walking out of them, and save your stamina for big area attacks (or when you don't see one in time or get stunned/dazed/slowed).
ok lets try help you as long as i can, my main its a gf but i play cw also and i find it 1 of the most important/fun/killer classes.
u reach lv 60, and as a fresh 60 u have a few blue, but u are mostly equiped with green gear thats the 1st problem, buy full blue gear from AH (100-200 ad) not more and full enchant it with at least lv4.
now your gs must go up to 7-9k depending on your build.
most ppl try avoid t1 dungs (jumping direct to t2 or getting pvp gear from the npc), my advice would be run few t1 like CT/CC (most times those will drop blue gear on bosses) if u dont get a few purple items u will get selas of unicorn from each boss u can trade those seals for purple gear in town market seals npc. and ct its really easy but mostly its a good place to get use to dung fight with alot of adds.
now most important it skills and play style, remember cw-control wizzard so control steal time amazzingt skill u stun all adds arround if they are stun they dont atack , entangle force (or entangle something) on mastery it keep 1 add up so it doens attack and will push adds arround target to him a little control also, ice strike freezes target also so 1 less add attacking.
4th skill use shield not to throw adds but to take less damage.
dailly every1 will tell u use arcane singularity, but use opposing forces why? as u use it all adds it hit will be stun for like 8-10sec 8since skill cast till stun ends when it ends u stun all again with steal time again.
the healer can heal - but we all take potions from time to time cuz its hard to avoid all red or we lagg. on my cw i have a few life steal enchants cuz it gives me x% of the damage i do as HP it may not luck muvh but imagine 5% on each attack its 50 hp every time u do 1k damage but u use aoes so u hit 10 targets u get 50 from each, 500 hp!
the rest its play and try make parites that have more classes that just HR's cuz they run back and u and dc get all aggro, 2 cw 1 dc makes it easyer a gf or gwf also that take most damage for u a tr if he uses smoke bomb adds get stun adding your stuns it most adds stuns 70-90% the time.

I've been playing this game for roughly 3 weeks now. I did not run many dungeons leveling up nor did I buy any of my gear from the auction house. The only time I ran a dungeon while leveling was if I had the quest for it, which you get for completing a quest chain in a zone. When I hit level 60 I had all blue gear, most of which I either bought with seals, or dropped for me from mobs as I quested. I immediately started doing Dread Ring and Sharandar dailies and noticed the mobs in these zones were much stronger than the ones I encountered leveling up. however, there was plenty of good blue gear dropping for me from the mobs in those two zones. It did not take me long to get a full set of gear and get my gear score to about 8k. I started running tier 1 dungeons and they are laughably easy. At this point I have a 12k gear score and am currently working on my tier 2 set. I already have half of the Grand Warden set. Basically, you're doing it wrong. You just need to learn your class better and do the content in Sharandar and the Dread Ring to gear up.
TL;DR Be patient and work on getting a decent set of blue gear from Sharandar and Dread Ring, then move on to the tier 1 epic content. It won't take you long and you'll do fine outside of dungeons.

Yep, I read what OP said. It's why I offered help in game. My suggestions are based on what I do, as I suspect those of many of the others are. What works for one may not be best for another, but we can only offer from our own experience. Not a bad suggestion with the foundries, but for a fresh 60, who needs work on both build and gear, many of those can be murder. And they don't usually give much in the way of material gain (gear upgrades,) other than the AD from the dailies. It is good practice, though. In the zones, it is usually easy to find someone to help. There are plenty of people willing to help out, just as there are plenty of people who.. aren't.

Getting a 4-piece armour GG set and a two-piece weapon GG set is extremely long.
You don't need to do PVP at all to get both shares and regardless, you only need one share to get into Fardelver. Fardelver is the one someone should be running to gear up and the only reason it can be difficult is if the party makes it so by trying to go too fast and making pulls they can't handle. As a DPS class, the OP may have to wait a bit for the queue. They can also use /lfg but if their GS isn't great, the queue is going to be better.
Assuming that they go with FC, the easiest way to get one share solo is to show up at the start of Armories of Moradin and help build catapults. With either faction, it's easy to collect lumber and boulders without ever once aggroing a mob. From the entrance, go to the right, head down the steps and then down the long stairs on your left. Collect lumber and boulders as you go. On the luskan side, there's even a lumber cart at the forge area. If you avoid the area around the Great Hall, all of the mobs will be solo strength, so if you do aggro something it's a winnable fight for an undergeared character. Don't bother with the final, glory collecting part if you're soloing, The elementals aren't that bad for a CW, but the two demolitionists and the cart turn in are murder unless you're well geared.
As soon as Armories end, hit escape to get rid of the cut scene and queue for Fardelver. You may not get in, but usually in the past I managed at least one or two runs, three or even four if the party sticks together and re-enters. It is a grind to get the gear of course.

Health Potions are cheap and really just become a part of the fight rotation. Hit, hit, hit, potion, dodge, hit etc...
Armour is also a good investment.
And what would the fun be if it was easy as for instance below lv 40 - pith - would be hardly worth playing.

But as for group action, or my own personal effectiveness ... well, I don't have issues on either my 35 CW, or my 60 TR, but neither of them is a level 60 CW, so I can't really say. I definitely agree with the OP on all those insane AOE zones everywhere -- especially on my TR, they're quite aggravating, especially when they're coming from multiple directions such that no matter where I dodge I roll from one into another -- but I've learned to grit my teeth & deal with them.
One thing I can say is that on either of my characters, I have a lot more fun in groups than I do soloing, & this is the first MMO I've ever played in which playing my character the way I want gets me the results I want, so I'll keep playing until that's no longer true.

1) Find a good group that is willing to either carry you or endure the miseries of the Learning Process at your side or
2) Do the Solo Content over and over and over and over again until you build up enough power, gear, skills, and resources to match the power of your Pug, buying what you need on the A.H. with the A.D. you ground out Solo.
The other think I noticed was the Class you chose.
The Control Wizard is both extremely squishy AND requires the most skill and experience in the game to play well (it is also arguably the most powerful class in the game in the hands of a truly skilled player). Sounds to me like you would be happier with one of the Melee classes, a GF or GWF. Both are easy to play Solo and, at least GWF's are always welcome in Dungeons and GF's get into PvP matches CRAZY quick. Just be aware that GF's will generally be slow to play and advance for the first 50 or so LvLs until you pack on some Power, then they get a lot more interesting. They are also about to get a REALLY nice buff in the up and coming PvP Patch.

I have a Lvl 60 CW, a month old. It can be tricky, you can die really fast if you're not paying attention. On the same note though, it is very powerful. All I have is T1 Pvp set and some stuff I dropped doing the campaigns. If I pay attention and use my rotation properly I can quite easily obliterate anything in PvE straight away without a dent.
I do agree that there should be a free respec when you hit 60. I have re-speced 3 times before finding peace of mind and the first run was very far from perfect.
P.S. CWs have 3 dodges and DPS. My cleric with his 2 dodges and low DPS had much worse time, compensated by being able to get into dungeons fairly easily. My GWF had a very easy time but now sits on the bench waiting for the changes to come.
2 Advice:
- try also different classes if you didn't
- get on the preview server and try the free re-specs there, it's possible your build isn't optimal and giving you headaches
I think of reaching level 60 as sort of a second birth, and you get to level up again. Only, you are not gaining experience levels, you are collecting boons, optimizing your build specifics and getting the gear best suited to what you want to do. If not for that, one might as well quit playing the minute you reach level 60, or create an alt and do it all again with a different sound and light show.
Yeah there are the epic dungeons. And a group of experienced and well built/geared players can usually carry a new level 60 player to help him or her build up. There are a ton of ways to get your character viable for dungeoning using the Sharandar and Dread Ring zones, and PvP. Hopefully you will have been working on your crafting all along, and that will help a lot too, with AD generation. I nearly meet or exceed my daily AD refining quota on all of my chars (I have at least one of each class) every day just from leadership tasks and invoking. Toss in some dailies and the salvage of the fairly steady stream of bound purple junk and I almost always have AD waiting to be refined.
There is nothing wrong with the class you chose. CW's are probably the easiest to profit with. Check out the guides for the CW in the class forums, and look at other posts relevant to your class and to gaining assets in general.
And don't forget to get the companions who offer the best active bonuses for your char.

Running a DD with friends or a quality guild is a much better experience.
1st: buy at least a decent blue gear at the AH, don't keep your greens a second after hitting 60. You can get a full blue equip for a day's worth in Invoking (2k AD is more than enough).
2nd: do the dailies in Sharandar and Dread Ring. In just a few days (under a week) you can get the 1st and 2nd boon (extra 500 skill points each), and some purple pieces of equipment. Also, you usually find some stuff to sell on AH and buy some more purple equipment. Always do the lairs in a party, it seldom takes more than 2 minutes to find one.
3rd: depending on your class, a cleric companion, even the basic one, can be of invaluable help, he won't keep you always up but chances are you will use far fewer potions between encounters. Also, depending on your class, some regeneration/life steal can help a lot. With a full Thayan tier1 gear (lots of life steal), i rarely ever use potions with my CW.
4th: farm some unicorn seals during DD in an easy dungeon (cloak tower takes 15 minutes, has easiest bosses ever), it's worth more purple equip. Not the best one, but better than blue. Also, you can get some purple drops to refine for AD.
I had some friendly people give me advice, basically go see SGT Knox, do the sharander and Dread Ring campains for a couple of weeks, do the easy skirmishes during skirmish hour like master of the hunt and dread ring.. you dont need to have Gear Score for those, most of the time during the hours poeple with much higher gear score are in there for quick astral diamonds, so you really dont have to do much at all, just stay alive.
For about 10k astral diamonds any class can gear themselves in all blues other then pants/shirt, but for about 15k you can even get those into blues. This will be enough to run CT and CC in after you upgrade, get a couple of boons. As soon as you can get whatever the best LVL 60 epic Main slot device you can, most of the time this will be around 10k astral diamonds to 20k .
Even playing 1-2 hours a day max this is all achievable by every person in game in a couple of weeks, then you will do the slower grind of getting your t1 epic set, increasing the enchants up (getting them to even r6 is a pain in the but really!) and working on artifacts, finishing the boons out and working towards t2.
One of the biggest issues with neverwinter is the grind to 60 is the easiest Ive ever seen in any MMO, you learn nothing really.
Follow the advice above, it gets easier, dont worry about the elitist, Ive run into them myself My main is a DC, my alt is a CW, Ive seen people advertising for 15k GS DC please.. WTH is with that!
Make the game fun, dont let others ruin it.. Its also no fun to hit a Dungeon to find barely above the gear score peeps that queued in, you just wont help much, but you can get to around 12k gear score within 2 months including getting all the boons pretty easily, it slows down after that, because of the enchant grind, but thats ok, thats enough to run everything up to the newest 2.5s and maybe some end bosses in the t2s, but its enough to start with. PVP wise, it sux queuing up and going against premades in the 15k range, but alas.. it is what it is. I ran into what must have been of a beast of a Cw this morning, He was taking on a GWF and my DC with barely any damage, his lifesteal mustve been through the roof, never took him down before his team arrived.
Ive spent 10 bucks in game so I could get my Stone when it was on sale a few weeks back, getting a augment companion is nice , they do not die, nor pull aggro and give you direct stats. Other then that I have spent any other money to get any gear, so the above is doable for free, you will have to dish out some money to get a superior bag/mount/companion (or earn tons of AD to get them, which isnt always feasible for people who cant play all day long.)

I personally don't like using a cleric companion with my CW, as I find her health perfectly self-sustaining (and she's honestly in what people would consider scrub gear), but she can use a little help with distracting the monsters that don't die to her initial rotation. Swashbuckler and Frost Mimic are both good choices from recent events, thus readily available on the AH. If these are still out of reach, go ahead and grab a Man-At-Arms or Shieldmaiden for two gold. Give your choice of companion defense, HP, and life steal to keep it alive as long as possible. Regen can be a decent stat on pets as well.
I'd echo the advice about trying skills on the preview shard so that you can see what you like using without committing or putting any funds towards a build that might not work for you.
As for general CW gameplay, most encounters while playing solo can be approached such that you take little damage, except during lair boss fights. A single Shard of the Endless Avalanche will wipe out weak mobs, while you cackle to yourself about bowling for powries. You can learn more from the build threads by Grimah and Stox on these forums.
A final piece of advice is to get yourself an epic quality weapon ASAP, as the higher base damage will make more difference for you than any other single piece of gear. Either hope you get the orb drop from Phantasmal Fortress, or just buy a Burning Shard of Elemental Fire for under 10k AD (salvage value of this item, readily available).

look at some guides for correct spec in CW forums, check what stats u need, its usually 20~24% armor pen, then crit+recovery+power amd i would suggest getting some 9%+ life steal(easy with boons and what not)
you can find a good set of blue gear for a few k ad(i think i got my tr to 10k+ gs with just blue gear) there are 2 tiers of lvl 60 blue gear they have different stat value so dont get the low ones
get rank 5 or rank 6 enchants they are cheap enough as long as you do dailies and stuff. if you lvled post mod2 then you should have at least rank 5s built up from lvling
get 5 white pets for 2g each - they only give 25 pts of stats, but its better than nothing, and start saving for stone
join guild and run gauntlgrym pve part, easy and gg set isnt bad
find a good guild, there should be enough guilds that have good enough players to run any content and who are willing to help new members get gear(as long as said members are working for it and trying to improve their skills and be valuable members of the guild).
cw is really easy to play, you stand safely out of harms way and have ton of cc and 3 dodges, but you do need to think a few steps ahead when playing cw. if you dodge dont just run away, reposition so you can get more targets in range of your aoe skills, try hitting enemies before they can move/hit you. learn skill cast times so you can knock them down just before they hit you
My fire mage is a lot weaker, kills things much slower. He has a 9.8k gs atm but is getting better gear each day.
Best thing to do is grind out Dread spire until you are fully decked out and look for dungeon groups or join a guild.

reaching level 60, you have gear sets to find and boons to earn. the social aspect of the game can help with that but if you're a solo player, you may have problems since running the dungeons to get great loot requires a group of five. and hopefully, a group of five friendly players.
joining a guild could help you but if it's not your cup of tea, then there are other avenues for you like joining a public custom chat channel.
lots of other good advice in this thread though. CWs are definitely squishy as their armor is made from cloth. if you stand in the red, your HP will be drained. you might be able to alleviate some of that by stacking regen but it's not a cure all. good dodging skills are definitely a requirement.

more you move more u will avoid red without a dodge.aim for 25hp atlest with 1,5dmg resist easy to get makes huge difference.
My build was and still is/could be considered rubbish, but my process of gearing after she hit 60 was rather short, I did not do the Sharandar missions. Gear up with anything that rises your GS to run T1 dungeons. T1 pugs are not picky. Target the 2 easiest T1 dungeon that can get you a 2 piece of a full set for the GS bonus. Coupled with any purple drops the interim bosses may drop, get your GS to over 9k minimum before pugging T2 dungeons. Again target the 2 easiest dungeon to get 2 piece of a T2 set, preferably not the same equipment slots as your T1 2 piece set. Aim for High Vizier 4 piece armor set first.
It took me several tries of each dungeon to get a full set of High Vizier. But the set's regeneration stats has since allowed me to get through any solo content (Sharandar Dread Vault) other than dungeons without the need for using potions.
1. Go to the AH and buy good quality blue gear - it's dirt cheap and really helps you get a foot in the door. If you feel the need to slot enchantments in this gear, only use rank 4's or lower. Save your better enchantments for later. You can usually fully gear up in blues for under 1000 ADs.
2. As a CW, I recommend you keep 2 companions ready to go - the cleric or a healer to reduce downtime, and a tank for actual fights. In regular PvE, while soloing, use the tank during fights, and switch to the cleric between them to heal you back up. The tank should survive at least long enough for you to clear some of the weaker enemies, so you can then focus on dodging and clearing the stronger enemies.
3. Start on the 2 campaigns. The early boons should be obtainable quickly enough, and can really help.
4. In addition to the 3 daily quests from Shadowmantle, there's also the instance. You get 1 free key into one of the instances, and they can give you purple gear to get you started off right.
5. Depending upon how many ADs you have saved up, you may be able to purchase some purple gear straight away. Prioritize what you buy, and also be sure to check your wealth tab for unicorn or drake seals - you may have enough to get some gear that way.

It's cheap enough to remove enchantments now that I don't see any reason not to use the best you've got. This was good advice back when unslotting cost huge amounts of ADs, but not so much now that it's a pittance of gold (1.5 to remove any enchantment from a level 60 blue item). Unless you don't have huge amounts of gold just lying around from buying too many potions, I guess.

- Spent some AD on the AH to get blue gears (about 100AD each). Stats i aimed for are power, crit, armor penetration, recovery. My belief is that the faster the monsters die, the faster the encounters will go, then the less mistakes i will make (in terms of dodging). Remember that there are a few tiers of blue gear, just be diligent and search through the AH to find the higher tier blue gears with better stats (about 100 more stat points).
- Spent moar AD to get rank 4 enchantments (or used those that i had saved up, ~300AD each). I simply put dark rank 4 enchantments in all offense slots to get as close to 2.5k armor penetration as possible.
- Spent moar AD to get lv 55 blue shirt n pants with no gem slots (about 2k each). More stats for me = more damage = mobs die faster = less chance of mistakes.
- Got myself a cleric to save pots. Leveled her up to 15. I did not give her any items/runes at all (and still didn't right now), and from my experience she seldom dies, apart from some silly AI pathing at times that causes her to run into mobs. But whatever the case is, i just summon and forget. If she aggros other mobs, i ignored her and let her die, while i run away to safety.
- Switched up my skills to the hard hitting ones to kill the mobs fast. I'm thaum specced, so i used Conduit of Ice on tab, Sudden Storm, Steal Time and Shard of Avalanche. It's a pretty standard suite as outlined in the various CW guides in the CW forum. Some suggest Chill Strike on tab which is good as well, but i prefer to 1/2 hit mobs with CoI+Shard. Usually, the trash would be gone and the elite moves towards u. So i follow up with ST to stun, and SS to hit him hard again. Then comes the cha-cha dance if he's still alive. Repeat ad-nauseum.
- Regarding dodging, where possible i will walk out of reds instead of teleport. I will only teleport when i'm caught casting a spell halfway. This saves your stamina for more oh-5h1t moments.
- Joined a guild. My opinion is that whichever guild that is willing to take you in, is probably friendly to newbies/undergeared people. Run dungeons together with them, starting with CT or CC to get familiar with boss situations. Listen to them as to what needs to be done, as CW has a wide range of utility powers that can be useful in certain situations. Pushing mobs off ledges, Singularity on top of the tank/boss, stack chills (Icy terrain + CoI + RoF), or just focus dps on the boss (RoE).
- Get used to dying in dungeons. It is just simply harder compared to open world content. Be friendly with the clerics, and stay in their blue circles. Kite the adds within the circles if possible. Be prepared to burn through pots, though I feel that is largely a factor of how good your group is. A weaker group will require a lot more pots, as the mobs die slower = more mistakes = more pots. If the group is strong, sometimes i don't need to pot at all.

They are willing to bring new people (like me) to dungeons for their first time, without questioning your gear score or whether you have a stone etc. Just bring a good attitude to learn, follow, and ask if in doubt.
- Save up whatever unicorn/drake seals and gauntlygrym coins, and buy suitable upgrades for your blues. Though from my perspective random purples tend to have a even balance of defensive and offensive stats (like 200 defensive points and 200 offensive points), so i usually stick with my blues because i can get more offense (like 300 points) out of them. If it helps with your survivability, by all means go for the purples.
- I really saved up for a ioun stone of allure. I salvaged/sold everything i had: enchants, RP stones, greater marks, blue gear, anything that was of value was sold. Now that the zen is cheap, u will need about 400k AD to buy 1200 zen from the exchange and buy your stone. The stone for me was a DPS boost in dungeons, more stats more damage. But you can go defensive as well, and stack defense/regen/life steal. I still stick to the cleric for soloing to save pots.
- I bought a lesser plague fire enchant as well to debuff for the party. Anything that helps the party helps you as well.
I'm still wearing blue gear(all jewelry/waist/head/chest), and managed to farm only 2 T2 parts, with only rank 5 enchants, so i'm not pro in any sense. But I hope my experiences can help you in some way.

I have a toons of each class and not all of them play the same... My first toon and my primary one is a lvl60 CW (Executioner). He is equipped with T1 PVP set and the T2 weapon of the Gaultrym item set. With some other item and with mostly lvl7 gems my GS is 12k. Even with that i have to move a lot because it's not built to stay still. If i compared it with my lvl60 GWF (mostly blue gear, purple sword, lvl5-6 gems) my GWF can take pounding and be alive in a close quarter fight because it's designed for that.
In all the game i played (MMO and solo) if i can chose a mage (wizard), i chose that even if in almost all of them they are squishy thing that die easily in close combat. If you want something that does not need to move like crazy you need to chose a tank class like the GWF and GF. The Rogue, Hunter and Cleric class are in between but still require more movement than a GWF or a GF.
If you can get a few good companion they can also help with their active bonus and do not forget about the artifact. The bloodcrystal raven skull and the water of elah'zad artifact can heal you a lot and give some good bonus.
You have to actually defeat the dungeon. Also you have to get queued. You have to complete the pvp part. And for this pvp part you also have to get queued.
Getting a 4-piece armour GG set and a two-piece weapon GG set is extremely long.
Also, ppl suggest that the OP should farm Sharandar and Dread ring. Did they ever read what he said? He said he's already having a hard time facing one group of mobs. Because squishy and quickly out of dodges and not powerful enough yet to just wipe everything with one AOE. What do you think will happen to him in Sharandar and Dread ring? These areas are packed with mobs. You start fighting one group, you move a little, you dodge, and here another group detects you and now you're fighting ten mobs at a time. The OP will die there.
I would suggest exactly the opposite. First go to not-to-hostile foundries (Bill tavern maybe) and fight the foes one group at a time, until you have found the rotation that suits you, until you know which foe of the group you have to get rid of first, until you have found which companion helps you most, until you know when to use your artifact.
Yep, chances are you will draw a lot of aggro (there is a 3 point feat that can help with that), so unless there are few targets you feel confident you can keep under control, move a lot. Since you can't dodge as much as a GWF or HR, try to avoid small areas by walking out of them, and save your stamina for big area attacks (or when you don't see one in time or get stunned/dazed/slowed).
ok lets try help you as long as i can, my main its a gf but i play cw also and i find it 1 of the most important/fun/killer classes.
u reach lv 60, and as a fresh 60 u have a few blue, but u are mostly equiped with green gear thats the 1st problem, buy full blue gear from AH (100-200 ad) not more and full enchant it with at least lv4.
now your gs must go up to 7-9k depending on your build.
most ppl try avoid t1 dungs (jumping direct to t2 or getting pvp gear from the npc), my advice would be run few t1 like CT/CC (most times those will drop blue gear on bosses) if u dont get a few purple items u will get selas of unicorn from each boss u can trade those seals for purple gear in town market seals npc. and ct its really easy but mostly its a good place to get use to dung fight with alot of adds.
now most important it skills and play style, remember cw-control wizzard so control steal time amazzingt skill u stun all adds arround if they are stun they dont atack , entangle force (or entangle something) on mastery it keep 1 add up so it doens attack and will push adds arround target to him a little control also, ice strike freezes target also so 1 less add attacking.
4th skill use shield not to throw adds but to take less damage.
dailly every1 will tell u use arcane singularity, but use opposing forces why? as u use it all adds it hit will be stun for like 8-10sec 8since skill cast till stun ends when it ends u stun all again with steal time again.
the healer can heal - but we all take potions from time to time cuz its hard to avoid all red or we lagg. on my cw i have a few life steal enchants cuz it gives me x% of the damage i do as HP it may not luck muvh but imagine 5% on each attack its 50 hp every time u do 1k damage but u use aoes so u hit 10 targets u get 50 from each, 500 hp!
the rest its play and try make parites that have more classes that just HR's cuz they run back and u and dc get all aggro, 2 cw 1 dc makes it easyer a gf or gwf also that take most damage for u a tr if he uses smoke bomb adds get stun adding your stuns it most adds stuns 70-90% the time.

TL;DR Be patient and work on getting a decent set of blue gear from Sharandar and Dread Ring, then move on to the tier 1 epic content. It won't take you long and you'll do fine outside of dungeons.
Yep, I read what OP said. It's why I offered help in game. My suggestions are based on what I do, as I suspect those of many of the others are. What works for one may not be best for another, but we can only offer from our own experience. Not a bad suggestion with the foundries, but for a fresh 60, who needs work on both build and gear, many of those can be murder. And they don't usually give much in the way of material gain (gear upgrades,) other than the AD from the dailies. It is good practice, though. In the zones, it is usually easy to find someone to help. There are plenty of people willing to help out, just as there are plenty of people who.. aren't.

Assuming that they go with FC, the easiest way to get one share solo is to show up at the start of Armories of Moradin and help build catapults. With either faction, it's easy to collect lumber and boulders without ever once aggroing a mob. From the entrance, go to the right, head down the steps and then down the long stairs on your left. Collect lumber and boulders as you go. On the luskan side, there's even a lumber cart at the forge area. If you avoid the area around the Great Hall, all of the mobs will be solo strength, so if you do aggro something it's a winnable fight for an undergeared character. Don't bother with the final, glory collecting part if you're soloing, The elementals aren't that bad for a CW, but the two demolitionists and the cart turn in are murder unless you're well geared.
As soon as Armories end, hit escape to get rid of the cut scene and queue for Fardelver. You may not get in, but usually in the past I managed at least one or two runs, three or even four if the party sticks together and re-enters. It is a grind to get the gear of course.
Don't undervalue defensive stats.
Figure out a balanced mix of stats with diminishing returns in mind.
work towards something like
~4000 power
~2400 crit
~2400 Armor pen. (I see this one as candy an currently have ~1600 ish)
~3750 Recovery
~2k defense
~1.2k deflect
~1k regen
~x lifesteal (i find this one soso.. any *extra* can'T be bad though)
These include bonus stats coming from ioun stone of allure.
once getting close to this kind of stats , you really start to feel powerful, and solid.
all that's left to do now is find a decent build that suits your style and you can't go wrong.
