Deleting assets for higher quality?

Is it possible to delete an asset for a higher quality asset? Like the asset you start with, say for leadership, is white and I'd like to pick up a rare or epic. Instead wasting that spot on the white asset can I delete him, purchase a rare or epic to replace him?

The workers and tools aren't bound, even after you use them. Thus, if you don't want them for some reason, you can either sell them back to a vendor, or get some astral diamonds on the auction house.

. . . . . . Most assets are not bound. You can delete, trade, or sell them.

. . . . . . However, the first two ranks of People Assets (and some tools) are upgrade-able to higher ranks later on as you gain ranks in the profession. Leadership, for example, you can take 4 [Mercenary] and upgrade them to 1 [Guard] and then you can take 4 [Guard] and upgrade them to one [Footman].

. . . . . . Each time you upgrade an asset, there is a very slim chance that it will come out Green, Blue, or Purple. For example, when upgrading the 4 [Guard] to make 1 [Footman], there is a slim chance it will instead be an [Adventurer] upon completion of the upgrade.

. . . . . . The same holds true when upgrading tools, however you can only upgrade tools of green and blue quality. White tools are not upgrade-able.

Keep in mind that many tasks give you the option of using multiple assets to get better/faster results, and that you can eventually get up to nine tasks at a time on each character, so the more the merrier. And you may want to try different Professions as time goes on, so, even if you don't plan to use, say, that Mailsmith RIGHT NOW, save him for latter when you decide to give Mailsmithing a try (say, when you decide to try out a DC or GWF).

Your profession bag for assets is quite large, and while it's possible to amass a fair number of tools and dudes, I have yet to run out of room.

When you select a task, the game usually slots the highest quality (green, blue, purple) worker or tool for it. If it doesn't or if you want to use something else, click the drop down menu where it shows the asset and select something else. As noted above, inventory space isn't really an issue so there's no reason to delete something. You can sell unneeded assets on the AH though.

Do you have first-hand knowledge that this is true? I heard it as a rumor a while back, but I have never known anyone that it actually happened to.

This was actually confirmed by the devs....and while I have no hard data on how likely this is, I suspect it is something like a 0.1% chance.
    Hoping for improvements...

. . . . . Yes. Along with developer confirmation, I've recently upgraded 4 [Guard] and got 1 [Adventurer] instead of a [Footman]. I also personally know two people who have also gotten higher quality assets when upgrading.

So the only way to have non-white tools, it's to buy and open profession packs ?

They aren't bound so they get sold on the AH.

. . . . . Professions or Assets packs, yes you could, with real money into Zen. You could also exchange AD into Zen and buy them that way without spending a dime. You could also do the same and buy a locked box key and open a locked box that has the chance for a professions or assets pack and get them that way. You could also buy them from others off the Auction House, and so on.

Higher quality assets come from the Zen store packs, from profession packs in lockboxes, and from a special profession pack awarded doing the Neverdeath quest chain (I got a steel mortar from the last one I opened).

I just wait for promotions that make other people go nuts buying the profession packs and buy their stuff for cheap.
