I just made a new character and so far, while levelling, I've noticed that Zone chat is dominated by some East European language. I don't remember that being the case when I levelled my previous characters, so did something change?
I have no problem with people who don't understand English, but I feel quite unwelcome when Im playing my alt and I only see people speaking in some foreign language.
I tend to not pay much attention to zone chat, especially in and around PE as it is more than a little spammy, however I would guess that you are noticing non-english more, because it stands out, and of course, this is the euro-primetime, so its more than likely that you will see multiple languages. Contrary to popular belief, we don't all speak european over here, we have around 35 major languages.. and many more minor ones.. it gets confusing..
Im all for people speaking their native tongue but zone chats need to have an enforced majority language otherwise you end up with hysterical zenophobia going on left right and centre..
Just stick to English, enforce it and be done with it
In AOC the servers were split EU/US and before that RUS servers as well, when the RUS servers were merged with the EU it was just as joke. Sorry to list some stereotypes but the language coming from the Eastern block was highly racist, highly bigoted and highly ignored by the mods which is just totally unacceptable & isn't exactly welcoming for new players.
Obviously as in all cases that is not the majority for any nationality but if left unpunished it becomes the 'norm' so best just to not allow any infringement from a set path at all..
Kick all that in the behind from day 1 and just say zone chat is English, finish an kla..
lol??? kick everybody who does not speak english?? lol, really? hahaha
this game caters to young kids as well, it being free to play and all.. so, you are going to punish everybody who is not either native english speaker or has studied english for many years? you got to be kidding me.. who are they bothering if they write in their native tounge in zone chat? it sickens me to read stuff like that..

All shards are international, so who's playing is highly dependent on time of day around the world.
I see tons of racist/bigoted commentary in zone chat written in English, which bothers me a hell of a lot more than if a couple of people are chatting away to each other in Polish or whatever. I don't read most other languages well enough to identify whether they're behaving themselves or not, so I just disregard it.
Feel unwelcome because people aren't speaking the language you're most comfortable with? Well, how do you think ESL folks would feel if told they can't use their native tongue even when someone else is online who is likewise fluent? Jeeeeeeeeeeez.

The only thing I find funny there is that you inserted the word 'kick' to justify your point when I never said kick anyone, maybe a language problem in a language thread eh.. who have thought it..

ESL= 'English (as a) Second Language' for those not in the know.
For OP and those of a similar mindset, I recommend you google the word 'ethnocentric'. It might help you out.

I tend to ignore Zone regardless of who's chatting or what language they're using.
In parties on the other hand, I'd much rather have someone (or a couple of members) chatting away in another language, or even on the voice chat, than some jerk bragging about how much damage he's doing compared to everyone else (who just happen to be 6 levels lower than him) and complaining all the time.

To be fair, you talk about xenophobia then your next point is 'Enforcing' English only in zone chat, not a very smart plan.
This should be good. Personally, I'd love it if there were EU and US servers, so that I could play on the EU ones- less of a socio-political gulf and fewer scheduling nightmares. However, right now, people just have to suck it down.
I just love the way that despite my post saying that they should just have one language to AVOID this type of situation the green party jump all over it like a rash..
Each to their own.. I suppose that's why we can create our own chat tabs:rolleyes:

Ethnocentrism (not ethnicity) has everything to do with it. Just because you can't see the link doesn't mean it isn't there.
Now let me ask you a question. How do you think a Polish player would feel if 50 people were speaking English in a room? (this is where the ethnocentrism part comes in, trust me).

i can sort of speak English, German, french and Spanish, and still i see russian and other European languages that i do not understand in the chat but at any point i ignore the chat unless i see something good for trade in enclave :P but in any case enforced language i think will be a problem
Everything works out in the end . If it hasn't worked out yet, it isn't the end...
It's simply rude to use other than english on general channels, as those channels are meant to be understood by everyone. I think by now it should be a standard in western MMOs to use english in-game while communicating with / along randoms.

Use English only in general channels? What if they don't speak or understand English?
This game is f2p and it's international. Ignore the zone chat if you don't understand it. Or how about chatting in English in zone and maybe just maybe you'll get replies in English.
Hahahahahaha... I speak english but really... Howdo you think they feel with the non stop english and they manage just fine.:D
Of course they could be talking about you...

I would propose that the channels are meant to be used by everyone, whether or not every single individual online at a given time understands every single word.

I think your post got truncated by that weird forum bug
I think it has to do with some symbols being used for code or something. For example, I can't use the GBP currency sign, it just disappears along with everything after it.

I am doing a study on this very issue and would love for you to elaborate more (based on your Opinion) how other people feel about using English as the standard language in Online Games. I'm curious as to weather that's the standard for most Online games to use English as the default language and if so why is that.

yes servers are taken over by the foreign crowed we are all doomed hand me your AD now and run. I ignore it mostly as US servers no longer exist in any MMO

Ah, so you see my point; very good.
For the other part I'll do a quick copy paste from Wikipedia, if you don't mind:
Ethnocentrism is judging another culture solely by the values and standards of one's own culture. The ethnocentric individual will judge other groups relative to his or her own particular ethnic group or culture, especially with concern to language, behavior, customs, and religion. ~ Wikipedia (5th of July, 2013)
The keyword here is "judge/judging". Where in my post (OP) did I judge anyone based on their language, behavior, customs and/or religion? I only said it made me feel unwelcome, if I get the feeling I am the only one who is not understanding the language spoken in General/Zone-chat.
One big game company (which shall remain unnamed) understood this issue very well and implemented mono-language servers for their MMO, e.g. French, German, Spanish, etc. This made it possible for those who like speak in their native language to do just that.
Now, Neverwinter has only multi-language servers, so there is no choice. The "gentleman's agreement" is that you use English in public chat on these servers and most of the time it is regulation. To be honest, I have no idea Perfect World's statement on this, but I would advise them to look into this issue, or they can end up with natural mono-language servers...

as soon as you feel uncomfortable you are making a judgement about who the players are, what they are saying, why etc. You have also gone to wikipedia for a definition which isn't the most accurate source. i recommend the maquarie or websters dictionary.

I don't mind other languages that I don't understand..but don't be offended if I join a group...get no responses to group tells because no one understands me and I sporadically drop.Aint nobody got no time fo dat!

Ye dropping is fine if you don't feel included or understood. I am just concerned that imposing one language in general chat falls under the discrimination banner given that the game is international, even though it was developed by an American company and published by a Chinese one.

I'll answer with a question:
If you're in a room with 50 other people who all start talking in a language you do not understand, how do you feel?
Ethnicity has nothing to do with this. I have no idea why you brought that up, so I cannot really defend myself (nor do I see any reason).
