I used an ioun stone in CB, and will probably spring for one once the game goes live. This is assuming I can upgrade it to purple, level it, repackage it (btw, anyone know off hand how much it will cost to repackage a level 30 zen store companion?), pass it to an alt, and have it retain purple/level 30 status.
    Dystopia - Impact Cleric
    Nyx - Divine Cleric
    Medusa - Brush Wizard
    Spinnerella - Combat Wizard

Don't forget to update the Wiki!

The Honey Badge is good DPS when I was using it and its tanky. It strong enough to solo most low level solo instances IME, it got insane burst damage, the first 3 dungeons boss figts where oh boss *Poof* the Badger ate it.

I don't know about purple/lvl 30, but I was able to make a lvl 20 cleric "inactive" and then mail it to myself for free. I then logged in as an alt and took it from the courier for free.

I leveled the tomb spider to about 20 thinking I could unlock the elder tomb spider skin (the 4th skin) but it didnt unlock.
The spider sucked no aggro had bite and rake ....it sucked ...but looked cool and made alot of spider noises! I liked the Stone as I was getting 500extra power and 300 crit from items once I got it to 20 it took 2 power related red upgrades and one blue...when my companion did nothing I used the stone

The limits are 15 Grey 20 Green 25 Blue and 30 Purple by default. You can buy Training/upgrade items that allow you to level up all of them to level 30 of diamonds dunno how much it cost though as there was no price on them in BW4.

I would be inclined to get one of the non-sentient "companions" like the Ioun Stone or the cat that just buffs me and presumably doesn't get killed (although if it has hit points and can die to AoE or something that may influence me)... but in the betas I always used a cleric companion. While I did not always take a ton of damage (nor did the cleric HEAL a ton) the top-offs that the cleric gave me between fights was welcome --- I hated starting a fight with half hit points, but I also hated "wasting" a healing potion to return to full. Not being able to heal naturally over time is a new, and uncomfortable, experience.

During Beta 3 when healing aggro was jacked way up, the cleric served as a tank but of course died very quickly... but during Beta 4 with improved healer aggro, foes did not dog-pile on the cleric but when I went into stealth they just looked around for me. The cleric lasted longer and I was able to do my rogue thing.

Both for AI issues and from a concept standpoint, though, I'd rather not have my sneaky trickster rogue with a ~cleric~ tagging along with me. I halfway roleplayed that she was a persistent do-gooder who kept following me against my will, trying to make me mend my thieving ways... but I'd rather it be just me and my cat or floating magic doo-hickey. If the cat pet can be damaged / killed... I don't want to see my little kitty cat corpse on the ground. :(

I just wondering.. they keep saying there's no p2w, so how about this 35$ companion, which has a much higher DPS output than best striker among free companions - the dog?

The Ioun Stones do have visuals. They are floating stones around your characters head. They get more special looking as you level up the Stones.

For all you Lone-Rangers out there! Ioun Stones give your character buffs to make up for the DPS loss when rolling solo. The companion for the companion-less. Can't wait to get mine.

Anyone know how the non combat cat companion works? Does it give any +stats without equipment as the Ion stone in Zen store didn't.

I believe the cat gave me .1 crit and I think it raised my recovery by .1 too without anything equipped and no matter what level it was. Very miniscule, but you get full stats from what you equip it with, which was very nice.

More like 140 or so if you remain getting the currency at 2 or 3 per day. (Left BW4 with 8, so the drop amount seems to be random as they reset the currency each weekend. So you're looking at 3 to 4 months, but fortunately you can do it in your own saving time since it looks like that currency won't degrade the way the daily currency does.)

Anyhow, when choosing your companion you have three ways to do it and THERE IS NO WRONG WAY!

First way: Pro-cyclical, typically this will mean a dps companion, but it can also mean grabbing the man at arms as a GF or the cleric as a cleric. Pretty much you pick something that boosts your primary role by doing the same role. So for DPS you pick up a striker or a GWF or what have you that will dps while you dps.

Second way: Anti-cyclical, this is your utility grabber. They boost you through non-competitive roles. These are your buff companions like the cat and stones but also doing things like getting a striker if you're playing a CW or grabbing the cleric for your GF or a man at arms for your TR. These companions fulfill a primary role that your class doesn't do, they fill the hole.

Third way: Screw you guys, I'm going with something that looks bad ***! This will most likely be the most common way and really it's not a bad way to go. All the companions are pretty robust in doing their primary roles, maybe you want a dog or wolf because you think they are BA or have a pet in real life you want to name your companion by. Maybe you hate yourself and rolled a drow and now need a panther because you don't have any imagination or you need a spider because you still lack imagination? Maybe you think your GWF just looks a lot cooler with a little GWF sidekick rolling with them.

Which really brings up my final point, please let us choose a purely cosmetic race skin for our companions. It wouldn't be that much trouble and it would be nice to make your humanoid companions look like the other playable races.

I wouldn't be surprised if they changed it to spawn a random race / skin for each companion, requiring you to trade for the "Good" or "Rare" skinned ones.

Aliram, they get around the whole "it's not pay to win" scenario with the awesome zen-store pets because you CAN, technically, convert astral diamonds earned in-game to Zen through the AD/Zen exchange market and then "buy" the companion with that Zen that you did not "buy" technically.

I, too, would love to have some more customization options in the pets. Having different names is nice, but they DO all ~look~ the same which is fine for dogs and cats and Ioun stones and such, but if EVERY cleric companion looks the same, one has to wonder if there is a giant clone army of them somewhere.

Here's the reason as part of earning your credentials you have to go see a cranky old wizard who casts polymorph on you, hence every single person in those professions ends up looking the same.
