Welcome to the world the free loaders have brought us, the wonderful world of so called "Free 2 Play" .. which will cost you more than a Pay 2 Play game ever will. But it has been thrust upon us by the young kids coming off their Xboxes and Playstations and whining about a monthly fee, then falling hook, line and sinker for the greatest MMO marketing ploy of all time .. "Come on over, OUR game is free!"
I have already bought the Hero pack for my own reasons so I can't say that the decision to delay the dark elf release bothers me of course, but even if you do complain about it, what are you basing your facts on? Yes, they did say Drow would be in the game ... did they ever say they would be free? And they are in the game after all .. even if you can't play one yet.
I even understand it, these aren't charities, they are companies. They have to make money. This is the new socialistic order we are talking about, the freeloaders get to play for free, everyone else gets to cough up the money to keep the game's wheels running.
And Krubar, no, they don't get anything overpowering like they did in past incarnations. Just a standard +2 char, +2 dex, the trance ability and the cloud of darkness/darkfire encounter ability. All of which is not really earth shattering.
+2 charisma and +2 dex is huge if your playing a warlock or sorcerer or dual wielding cleric. What do dwarves get? +2 con? And humans get nothing? And half-orcs get +2 str? Sorry I missed the first beta weekend.

Humans get +2 to any attribute they want, while the other races get a +2 to a specific attribute and the choice of a +2 to another out of 2. For example, I think Dwarf has +2 Con and can then choose +2 Wisdom or +2 Charisma. Not sure if those are the exact Dwarf attributes, but you get the idea.
You should really check out some of the Youtube videos on the last beta weekend.
While I personally am not happy waiting 60 days to make a normal drow, I am at least pleased to know a that normal drow will be a free to play race. 60 days is a long time in an MMO though, that is two months. Ah well, all good things come to those who wait (or buy a Menzo-Renegade right away *chuckles*).
I don't see how this would affect my spending habits though.
You're absolutely right.. 60 days in MMO time is like a year in real world time lol

I don't think that's necessarily true at all. I've stayed subbed to a game I wasn't actively playing for months or years before, just so I'd be able to play casually when I had time instead of having to wait until I was willing to pay for a whole month so I could play for a bit on a weekend. As long as I average less than $15/month in this game over the entire life of my play, the higher transactional costs of ingame items are a bargain.
And many people play Cryptic's current games without ever spending a dime.

I wish I knew where this one came from. I have literally every item from the STO c-store, and I still have not spent as much on STO as I did alone on my months of subscribing to Everquest. $14.99 per month (it actually climbed to $16.99/Month before I quit. I hear they went F2P later on) does not seem like much, but it sure adds up if you are a long term player.

You fail to realize that F2Pers are also filling out the missing spaces in your community. A lot of games go F2P because of that fact, they need more, fresh players coming in. They also have to compete with games that ARE F2P. The idea of being able to play a game whenever you want is amazing. Personally, I'd rather just buy the game for $60 and get everything, rather than nickle and dime me. But I digress, few games are actually "F2P". They're more like time trials, or bad demos. You only get the full game when you pay, be it sealed off classes, weaker characters, less ability slots... Hopefully this game will do none of that, with this Drow thing being a one time mess-up.
That's why it's in quotes. That's just what I've seen it tossed around here as and found it to be a catchy term.
That's how I felt about it too. It's optional not necessary to play like so many have tried to claim. If it were something essential and not optional I'd be right there complaining with the rest of them, but it's not. In fact I didn't buy the big package for the drow I bought it because I like supporting good game Devs and these guys look like they got it under control. I'm also basing this off of what I've seen change in STO since PWE took over. They got a good thing going here. I'm more interested in the currency and the robe of useless items LOL
Really not sure what all the fuss is about, people know their other three games, they know how those games and their economies work, they know about the single shard system, but they also know that worlds they build can be quite big so I'm baffled a bit when I see people say things like "they made horrible decisions" with this title because really I'm not seeing anything wrong or terrible with this title. Just a bit confused about what people are finding fault with. Is it that they can't get something minor because they'll have to pay for it? Is it that they would have personally designed the game differently then the tried and true way that PW/Cryptic is doing now? People do realize that PWE is crying all the way to the bank because of the multiple successes they've had, these people know how to run a F2P MMO in a balanced fashion.
Secondly, what fiasco? Should I start another timeline?
"Any change to non-good alignment immediately strips the ranger of all benefits, and the character becomes a fighter, with eight-sided hit dice, everafter, and can never regain ranger status."

Still waiting to see if the game is worth spending money on, TBH. The drow thing doesn't affect me at all. I don't even play Drow.

Neither do I, but it still makes me hesitant to spend money on Cryptic, because it pretty much falls in line with the expectations they've set over the years.
Drow have been dumbed down in 4e... I don't see what's so amazing about them... Their stat bonuses are pretty <font color="orange">HAMSTER</font> except for Rogues and Bards.

You don't need to make a charac ter to save a name. Cryptic's naming policy means you can have the same name as someone else.
So you could have a character named Lawson, I could have one named Lawson, and so could anyone else. It's just that none of us could have 2 characters named Lawson.

Well I just stumbled on this terrible news. I already bought the heroes pack, so in no way will this change how much money I spent. But I am rather upset that they are blocking the normal drow for "at least" two months. I was planning on making normal drow too... I was going to use drow renegade for my good drow and the main drow race for my evil drow. Maybe I should skip playing at launch and wait 6 months till they have more content. I wasn't happy with the starter classes to begin with. Even if I play from the start, I'll be one of very few drow and it will be even harder to find a drow guild that fits me. So how is blocking the normal drow race for 2 months a perk for us who spent $200?
Edit: Actually now that I think about it, if I don't play in the beginning, my spending would probably be less since I won't buy anything for a game I'm not currently playing.

Heroes of the North can make both regular drow and the Menzoberranzan Renegade drow at launch.
According to devs, only the renegade will be available. Apparently, the game recognizes both regular and renegade drow as separate races.
I must have misread something. Anyway, that points to an epic, game-changing world event heralding their release. It sort of reminds me of Frogloks in EverQuest II. It could end up being pretty fun.

Don't talk like that it is all just a ploy for a cash grab at the evil hands of the demonic immoral Cryptic!!!

See, it doesn't even make sense from that perspective either since nobody has access to regular drow. Just the brown drow for HotN purchasers (or as I call them, Drowns)
So how is blocking the normal drow race for 2 months a perk for us who spent $200?
It isn't. Its just a way to make people that revel in having things others don't feel special while simultaneously not giving them anything special since not even them are getting access to normal drow till 2 months after launch. They're only getting access to their exclusive variant of the race, which no one else was gonna get regardless. So everything is just a smoke screen to artificially improve the value of the HotN pack without actually improving its value in anyway.
All of this is just IMO, of course, but I don't think it strays to far from reality.
Edit: Actually now that I think about it, if I don't play in the beginning, my spending would probably be less since I won't buy anything for a game I'm not currently playing.
Exactly.
Which kinda makes me wonder about the point behind all the "Cryptic has to make money" arguments in support of this decision. Since Cryptic is not selling the regular drow race regardless (no money in there), and might actually loose money from those that hold off getting into the game till drow become available (less money till two months in).
Don't talk like that it is all just a ploy for a cash grab at the evil hands of the demonic immoral Cryptic!!!
*ignores the sarcasm*
Exactly. They're trying to make as much money as they can off the $200 Founder's pack from people too desperate to wait two months to play drow, because they'll likely never make money out of drow any other way now. They already said they'd be giving regular drow away for free so there's no chance for them to make money out of them now unless they go back on their word in ways that would likely cause an even bigger fallout than holding them back for two months.
So unless they go back on their word now the only money they're ever going to make from drow is from the packs. And that was probably the most stupid decision of all out of this whole deal. If Cryptic really wanted to make money out of drow they should have sold the race at the store from the start. But they made the mistake of implying since years back that drow would be in as one of the (presumably free) races at launch.
Drow are not a standard race, and non-standard races normally cost money in D&D. You don't get them for free or as part of the regular manuals. You always have to pay extra for game supplements to get access to them. This is a big part of how D&D makes money, since these supplements enhance your gameplay experience by providing additional options, such as new races, classes, skills, feats and the like, that you don't get with just the base tomes alone.
That is how D&D makes its cash--on the come back. With all those little supplements that keep you paying extra to expand your game. But I believe that Cryptic failed to realized that so they gave away drow for free.
But drow are probably the most popular race in D&D--this entire "fiasco" is a testament to that. You don't just give drow away for free, you have make people pay for it. That's how D&D has thrived all these years. And it is "fair" because drow are not a standard races anyway. And non-standard races are not free because they're not part of the core elements that are necessarily or optimal to play the game. They're extras that spice things up.
Cryptic could have made money out of every single player that ever joined NWO and wanted to play a drow. But now, they will loose on all the money they could have made if they had simply sold regular drow at the store. Plus they will potentially loose money on all the people that will not play the game, either in part or in full, till regular drow become available as well.
