I'm super sad I might not have time to enter this contest. I had a killer adventure in mind, too. Grad school's got a lot looming on next week's horizon.
Will get to this once I finish the Dance with the Devils...
This city promises death for the meek, glory for the bold, danger for all, and riches for Jade! Elven Trickster Rogue: Two-bladed elf, tons of stabby stabby and that sort of thing...

Or when the devil comes down to Neverwinter? b:laugh
Have you seen the helmshold trailer? They're already here! b:victory

I keep refreshing the submissions page, looking for more entries. They're so much fun to read. And you'd think there'd be dozens... I mean, we're talking about a BETA key here. Granted, several interested parties have already mentioned that they're not eligible because they're not in the USA. Maybe they should at least be eligible for a Beta key for thier effort.
I suppose there are a few days left. I'm not quite finished with my own submission. Maybe there are more coming.
I counted what looked like the longest post and it was about 11,000 characters. That's good, because my adventure is already longer than that. I suppose if I'd spent the six hours I was counting instead writing my adventure I'd be done already.

14 thousand 500 ish ...
Though the number of words are less important than the adventure itself. I realized halfway that going too much into details is making it boring. When you read an adventure that is too detailed, your imagination gets restricted. Thats why I started cutting details.
For exmaple, I left out that they opened the tavern door and went outside and "Sensed this and this un-natural" and then went behind the building to enter the basement(basement has a separate door from outside) but I left it out as it would have spoiled the shock value of getting caught.
The problem itself is limiting the adventure to some measly 5000- words.

The less submissions are there, the higher is your win chance
Although as far as i remember, these contests get lots of entries in the last few days of their deadline.
I wasn't worried about my adventure being too long or not long enough. I was more worried about the entire description fitting into one forum post.

There is no character limit to the contest entry itself. As well, it only says "Only one Entry submitted per Participant," it doesn't say that the entry has to be contained within one single post.
If it doesn't fit in one single post, what I would suggest to do is use an external word editor, split it up, and then post it in multiple consecutive replies, noting at the end of each that it continues into the next reply. Then end it with a note signifying that the last post is the end of your entry. If you write it up in multiple replies on the forums itself, you're risking your Entry being split up by another person's entry. As well as risking loosing your work due to a browser crash or some other unforeseen issue.
I highly recommend to write them up through an external word editor first, saving your work often as you do, and then paste it into a reply into the Contest Submission Thread, then format it how you wish for forum aesthetics.
I am unaware what the character limit is on the forums. I'll see if I can find out.

You can use Quotes. I don't think those are included as word limit. Also, you can make multiple posts (four five posts) with first post named as Index and containing links to your later posts.

No word limit, just that concise stories are easier to read.

Quotes count. But there's nothing stopping you from entering "to be continued" and just posting in another reply. I'd recommend being ready to immediately post your multiple replies for continuity though.

Well, I got a partial submission. I hope I get to finish the thing in time. The whole mansion's supposed to get sucked into the Shadowfell and then unquiet spirits start rampaging through the masquerade ball attacking people.
I put in my bid for the beta key. It turned out to be about 31,743 characters, or 5,831 words. Just over 9 pages in MS word. I just couldn't stop writing. Sorry about that.

Was very nice, just read it.

Wow, I can't believe I made it in time. I'd been working on mine for over a week, and the thumb drive I had it saved on went kaput. I spent the entire weekend going over my test notes from a trial run of it when it was just a concept. I hope you guys enjoyed the "OMG Lite" version, it's all I could muster before the due date. I toned down some aspects of the submission for a level 1 run, and it's actually do-able as long as nobody goes John J. Rambo.

Good luck to you too!

I did edit my adventure today after the 10:00 deadline - apparently adding the maps cut off my last paragraph. I completely understand if that disqualifies me.
Edit: the maps were added before the 10:00 deadline, but I didn't notice until after the 10:00 deadline that I needed to make a second post to include the truncated information.

LOL I had mine so perfect (story was about as long as yours), then my thumb drive went downhill. I spent all night last night recalling everything I could and putting it in as good a format as possible before the deadline...then I remembered I was on Eastern Time...*sigh*
Read some really good entries. You guys are really trying to make it hard for me to get a beta key aren't you? There were only 12 entries... couldn't they just give all of us a beta key for the effort?
I'm REALLY, REALLY surprised that nobody used the Ravenloft setting. Here's the start of a Ravenloft adventure that has the opportunity to be the scariest thing ever posted on these forums:
"You're in Ravenloft. The outhouse is 15 feet from the back door and the sun has already gone down. A fog has begun to roll in. Good luck!"

Never played Ravenloft, but it sounds terribly... tense and urgent!

I played in a Ravenloft campaign for one session. It was spooky fun. He was a great DM, it was a shame he/we didn't continue. I don't remember why.
